'Warm Air' Ambient Modular Performance (Magneto, Eloquencer, ER-301, Morphagene)

  • Magneto recently arrived, so I put it to use on this patch that I've been working on for a while. While Magneto seems to do wanders with musical tones, I decided to try it on the percussion of this track, adding some very nice watery glitch FX.
    Probably my favourite part of this track though, is the vocal sample reel I prepared for the Morphagene. I'm manually moving through the sample via Slide for pretty much the entire track.
    ER-301 is providing all drums and percussion. The kick is being multed and fed into the Optimix to provide side-chaining for the bass. Percussion is sent out on a different 301 channel then into Magneto via Send FX on the Praga.
    Eloquencer + O_c on sequencing/quantizing, I'm sometimes manually doing fills for the snare and plucks
    Plaits for the bass
    Rings and STO adding sequenced plucks
    Maths controlling envelopes for Ripples cutoff
    Ultra-Random sending a bunch of random into Magneto, repeats, start/stop transport and speed.
    Nebulae 2 playing a pad which you hear at the very start
    Morphagene on vocals
    PNW on clock duty
    A little Epiano and string sounds were added in post.
    Recorded direct to SD card on the Zoom R16. Some compression and limiting was added in post.
    Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the music, and want to be notified of new uploads.

    To be able to alter a state of mind is a feat, a feat you are able to achieve consumately, and consistently. This is an incredibly intricate weave of pure magic... Returning to consciousness...

    Hands down, State Azure is one of the best ambient synth masters around. I keep debating whether I should purchase an ER-301 and the more i see in State Azure pieces, the closer I come to adding it to my racks.
    Awesome job and beautiful composition, State Azure. Thank you.

      You're too kind :) I was actually debating wether to sell the 301 for a Rossum Assimil8tor, as I mostly use my 301 for drums, it seems the Assimil8tor is more suited to that task and a bit easier/more immediate to use for that purpose. Appreciate the comment!

    Beautiful one State Azure, and the production is so qualitative, great work! So you've finally received Magneto, what's your global opinion about it? Btw I'm interested in Plaits, nor filtering neither envelopes on the bass? Sounds really good!

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you vssp, glad you liked it! It's a bit early for me to say much about Magneto, I need to explore it more..at first I had regrets because of the size/hp, so at first not so impressed, but I was trying to make Magneto work with this patch and maybe it frustrated me a little..but on the percussion I love the glitchy FX it can create. With Plaits I'm using a detuned Osc (you can see the settings in the vid), and yes some filtering provided by Ripples. No envelope on Plaits itself, but the filter gets an envelope for the cutoff from Maths..then it goes into Optomix for the Side-Chaining effect.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plaits does amazing bass tones by the way :)

    • @vsspmusic
      @vsspmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! I also have to practice more with Magneto! And thanks for the details on Plaits part, probably a good companion for Rings, we'll see! Have a good week-end

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Magneto seems to be very deep and requires some time to get familiar. I think Plaits and Rings go well together, personally I'm getting a bit bored of the Rings' sound and was thinking of selling mine for a different module. And thanks, have a great weekend yourself :)

    • @vsspmusic
      @vsspmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Magneto is not so easy to find the good workflow... I understand for Rings, on my side I quite like its standard sound though I really like it in using the input (noise for example)... anyway it's a matter of taste! The same for you

    I saw you have used the Eloquencer and also Hermod. Which one is the better option for polyphonic work? I am planning my first modular system and since I'm a keyboard player, I want to have a system that will lend itself to live sequencing with multisequenced/polyphonic voices in mind. Thanks!

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Hermod is probably best suited in this case, but to be honest, neither are great for polyphonic work..Hermod has the problem that overlapping/polyphonic notes on the sequencer can't be edited on a single part. But it does work as a decent MIDI > CV converter using multiple channels. It also allows MIDI live-looping, which is very cool for a keyboard player. Either way, polyphonic work in eurorack isn't easy yet, you'll need multiple VCOs, EGs, VCAs and a mixer that can handle all these signals. It can be done though.

    • @Handheldsounds
      @Handheldsounds 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stateazure Thanks for reply man. In your video "Hermod Study Polyphony/Looping" you're actually demonstrating a lot of what I would like to experiment with. Would you can to share some tips of a decent modular setup to accomplish that? I'm aware I would need multiple VCO/F/A and I already prepared some potential setup on modular grid but since it's my first setup..I thought it would be good to get some feedback.
      My modular grid rack is "Live Poly Gen"

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Handheldsounds Oh man, that was quite a while ago since I made that track. There may even be improvements, I know they've at least improved the MIDI live-looping, which is a great thing and the best thing about Hermod IMO. Plaits and Plonk in your rack actually have VCA/Envelopes built in, so that helps a lot as you can just go direct from pitch/gate into those. Plonk is also duo-phonic? I think, which helps to cut down note stealing/abrupt cut off of notes. The Piston Honda needs a VCA and EG. An Intelligel uVCA would do the trick for VCA, and for EGs I'm not sure..depends how much space you're willing to give up AND how many EGs do you really want, you should have at least two. You could go 2hp EG/ADR or something, they have a few options if I remember, or just find a decent dual EG..my personal preference is to buy a Mutable Instruments Stages, but you don't have much room left unless you lose one of the large modules.
