Full of beautiful interiors and pro tips from star designers, Making a House a Home is an inspiring and practical guide to designing your space from the floor up.
    In her newest book, beloved Rizzoli author Susanna Salk gives you all the tools you need to design every aspect of your home. Whether you’ve recently moved into a new place or want to revamp and refresh your current home, Salk outlines how to conceive and create a cohesive design for your space.
    Beginning with the basic elemental aspects of any interior-such as floors, doors, walls, and windows-and proceeding to fundamental decor decisions, like setting the design tone and making sure your rooms are livable and functional, this book walks you through the process, sharing approaches and techniques for designing every interior element.
    With beautiful photographs from top designers-such as Miles Redd, Bunny Williams, and Madeline Stuart, to name a few-showing a variety of stylish treatments and solutions, Making a House a Home is inspiring and educational, demonstrating how to implement both big and small design ideas into your space on your budget. Informative texts and practical instructions and tips from the designers create a how-to guide for bringing your rooms to life.

    I look forward to your videos as a treat in my day. I have been to The Ivy Cottage and will go back when next in that area. My adult son was with me on my visit there. He is furnishing his first apartment and found and purchased an old, lovely, mahogany, secretary desk. This was very sweet, because my first piece of adult furniture, at his same age, was a mahogany secretary desk. These desks were both made by The Jasper Cabinet, Co. We thought that it was an incredible synchronicity. He has styled it with a collection of old, sailing ships. Mine, with porcelain flowers and objects. Your selections were lovely. The towel bar is a wonderful find. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. We have had the same rain, btw. Cleaned out a few closets, rehung pictures, rearranged some furniture. Felt like a prisoner, but a productive prisoner! Blessings to you and your family. Also, a Mary.

      I completely understand. Since these are reviews, my intention is to give the viewer a sample of the book. Before I began this channel I contacted a publishing (Copyright/Trademark) attorney and she gave me lots of advice- the first being: "there can be a fine line between a review and a copyright infringement". I try to respect that advice.

    So that’s what Susanna has been up to. I love her Quintessance series. I really enjoyed the trip antiquing. I’ve been wanting to go but it’s just too busy on the farm this time of year.

      Well, I think whatever you are doing on the farm we all appreciate, and there will be time for antiquing later. My grandparents had a small farm and as a child I often fed chickens, picked blueberries and dug for (red) potatoes. The potatoes were my least favorite. We had dark sandy soil and it was hot and messy!

    I just got back from Scotland and on my last day I popped into the two charity shops to say goodbye, nice ladies, and I bought a large fine porcelain bowl, quite deep and covered in flowers and insects and butterflies inside and out, couldn't resist! NOT that I needed another salade bowl as some time ago I bought two Portmeirion ones and a lovely Spode Italian one. I paid only a few euros each for the Portmeirion and 2 euros for the Spode! Who doesn't love a bargain, especially a beautiful one !

      Midwest always seem to have the lowest prices on everything. Nobody wants these riches anymore. These younger generations want disposable junk. They toss grandmothers things to the side like trash yet what they don’t realize is they are buying trash and trying to live with that. Makes no since.

    Thank you Mary, I can be having a mediocre day ( my way of not saying a bad day) but when I see you have posted another video it brightens up my day completely and can’t wait to set aside the time to sit and enjoy your latest book find and “general musings” I have donated many books to our Little Free Library in town just so I can make room for the beautiful books you share. “ save your pennies for a rainy day” touched my heart and made me think of my grandmother too. What great things you found. That was really fun Thank you. I loved the serving dish from Czechoslovakia . I have a weakness for pretty dishes. I found that if I really find a pretty one or two I buy them and for a birthday or special occasion for family and friends I bake something and present it wrapped in cellophane with a simple ribbon as a gift.Cookies, muffins etc. I’ve purchased petite fours from our bakery and used those as well if I don’t have time to bake. A pretty cake stand is great also presented with a cake of course!

    • @thetartantopiary
      @thetartantopiary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you are feeling better. Mediocre is no fun, I have been there many days. Thank you for the great idea of presenting a gift from your kitchen in these beautiful serving dishes. I am definitely going to do this. I may go back and see if the Czechoslovakian dish is still there. It was only $12. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope your weekend gets better. 💐

I googled the name and found some interesting info under "Schumann porcelain " this manufacturer made many different patterns and can be found in German flea markets. I needed that chair like I need a hole in my head, but I went back to get it along with the 2 skirted chairs. The faux bamboo chair was gone! My thought are to remove the four glass upper doors and turn it into a book shelf and add different pieces of my collections for added interested. The shelfs are also glass as well it is lighted. What are you thoughts on my new idea?

      I love that. Be careful with the glass shelves. Their tolerance for weight is usually much less than wood. Also, if you used a striking wallpaper (Schumacher, William Morris or a personal favorite) to cover the back of the hutch- that would be eye catching. Even a paint color that mixes well with the rest of the room would be a nice background for books or other curiosities. If the wood used for the hutch is burl or other exceptional wood; leave it as is. This sounds like a nice project!

      Thank you for sharing about this new book; I’m excited to see it.
      Would you share the names of these shops? I see SO many wonderful gifts for others. Thanks for your consideration,
      Julie 🌷

      @@thetartantopiary The back of the hutch is covered with mirrored glass with gold swirls on it , not my taste and never has been. I Love the idea of using wall paper on the mirrored glass. I have rolls of white wall paper that I think I'll use for this project. The paper is textured and made to be painted over so if the white doesn't work for me I can always dry brush it to give it more interest.

    My design Professor told us...... Don't underestimate the power of color. Also, if you don't like something right off, you won't later.🌺

    Ok, I love Susanna Salk and I have several of her books (and this one is now on my list) but I have to say I really enjoyed the shopping trip!! I love your style and taste! Great choices. I love that you also gave information about the creators. As a side, I had a question. What is the blue paint you used on your porch ceiling? Do you remember the color name? I chose SW "Atmospheric" for my last house, which was very nice but a bit too pale. I haven't yet decided for my current house. Thank you for another very pleasant video!!

      It is a Benjamin Moore paint and I can't remember the name of the color, but I will get back to you on that. Thanks for watching and I always appreciate your comments!

    What is the difference between Vintage and Antique?

    • @thetartantopiary
      @thetartantopiary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question!
      It depends on who you ask, but it is generally agreed upon by professional appraisers, art dealers, and antique specialists that antiques are by definition “any object that is at least one hundred years old”, and the term vintage refers to “any object that is older than 20 years old and less than 75-100 years old”.

    Must say I really have no time for Ms Salk. Whenever she does a house review for TH-cam etc she is ludicrously effusive. If everything is ‘fabulous’ how can you tell if someknow actually knows what they are talking input. She reviewed a house once which was lovely but had very intrusive road noise. I unfortunately mentioned this in a comment and she wasn’t happy. Clearly the deal was that only positive, lovely, comments were welcome. The truth wasn’t welcome however. I expected no different TBH
    I do love this Chanel however. It’s very elegantly put together.
