- We sent interior designers Laura Hodges, Patrick Mele, and Xavier Donnelly back to school with a photo of the same college dorm room-then asked each of them to create a new design for it in their particular style, however they pleased. Three artists, one canvas, each bringing something different to the space. See which designer inspires you most on how to decorate your dorm room this semester.

I would have enjoyed this much more if they'd had to keep the existing furniture. Like every dorm ever.
Yes, I was happy when Xavier explained how he would put apart the bed. And then he completely went bonkers!
@@sarahdano55 Plaster four poster?!!
@sfowler1017 Well to each its own I suppose...But yeah it's kind of crazy. And frankly I wouldn't want to be that one poor student who has to put the bed back to its original state at the end of the year.
I hope they do the video again but where they have to keep the furniture
Yeah, I think that Laura tried the best with keeping the originals, like the light and the carpet, but even she changed a lot
Laura's design seems to be the only one informed by someone with prior realistic expectations of what normal university dorms entail and creative liberties students actually have.
His concept of two different personalities sharing the room is on point, but it’s just not practical
Not really, there's pretty much no storage and the chairs are super uncomfortable. Still very beautiful, but not practical
in no where during the intro were we told any of this was going to be practical. The college dorm was just a gimmick, its pretty much just another "tiny space interior design" video
"I'm gonna put maps on the walls so that the students can think of the world globally" is the most hilariously american thing I have ever heard 😂
Glad I wasn't the only one thinkin it 😅
And thats bad? Thinkin about the world as a whole??
@@SilentRaven8 I think what they meant was that the US in one of the few countries where you might actually need to be reminded that other countries exist. Countries in Europe are relatively small and people travel abroad all the time. Meanwhile, most US citizens don't even have a passport and might not be needing one for the rest of their lives. Also, because of the power disparity between our countries, US politics are of vital importance for most other Western countries, while our own political issues are totally inconsequential for the American way of life.
@@haukenot3345 yeah it's funny when other countries criticise something american on twitter - you get the usual young american response saying "you guys are so obsessed with us and we don't even think about you". that response in itself shows what we're pointing out, they have no idea how much american culture forces itself on other countries 😂 (much like western europe did, except somehow even more than that).
american companies try to outprice local companies in basically every sector, we are dominated by american culture and forced to know about the US. the US also is the main cause of instability/wars over the past 70 years statistically, so their culture/economic dominance is forced upon many countries globally. it would be weird for the rest of the world not to know so much about the US, when the average american doesn't realise how much their governments/biggest companies are trying to enforce their political/economic interests here. because the culture is easily experienced/understood just through watching US TV lol, people didn't even know my brother wasn't american/canadian when he did his phd there. that was the 1st time he ever visited the US, he was genuinely shocked (he's scottish lol, I guess if it wasn't a glasweigan accent they didn't think too much about it).
basically long ramble, but we're forced to learn about the US, not because we want to. we have to think about the rest of the world, but if you're in the most powerful country in the world - I guess thinking about the world doesn't matter as much to the average american (of course, there are many americans who are exceptions/do care too!)
laura's is the most practical and liveable, xavier is this trio's "the only limit is my imagination" designer and patrick's is perfectly ok. none of the chairs they picked could be sat on for long, though 😂
and no storage options, we own one shirt like real students.
UK: My daughter is off to uni next week, so I shall show her this video to see her reaction.
I truly like Laura's design followed very closely by Patrick's.
Xavier ...... where to start lol.
I wish the designers would also include their designs' unit and total cost.
Great video
@@isabellewhite3505yes, cost! These look VERY expensive.
Seriously, what was up with the chairs? Im also an interior designer and i was screaming at these chairs, tryna break the students back?
@@isabellewhite3505tbf, the point of the series is just to design as your imagination allows, it said at the beginning, no clients, no budgets, etc. But yeah it would be nicer to have the unit and total cost
@@ryeryeryerye BUT!!! If there truly was NO CLIENT, why would they say it's a college dorm? THAT gives them a clear client. And they WERE thinking of a college dorm while making their decisions. They HAD a client. College students. 🤷
Obsessed with Xavier not only inventing fictional occupants of the dorm, but also "and they were roommates"-ing them at the end there
I seriously doubt these two roommates become friends. Neither one is willing to compromise for the other. The princess is going to be stuck looking at the punks side and vice versa. They could totally end up friends if they weren’t living in each others space, but not this way.
I've laughed so much, loved him!
no bc it’s so fun lmaooo
Xavier was definitely inspired by Wednesday and Eden.
Was just about to say that
No Sam and cat
Sam and cat you mean
woah..!xavier, also a character in wednesday 😅
100%! I thought the same thing!! 😅
Laura is the clear winner here. Her design is so welcoming and actually livable. Shelving with storage would have been a nice addition though.
It's the best but also the most boring at the same time. Just my opinion.
@@sfonylx agreed, and my back would suffer if I had to study on her chairs for hours.
@@Nini00000 true.
Laura's looks like a non descript motel double bed room.
@@sfonylxI think the point is you bring in your belonging to make it yours, but keeping the base of it all nice, livable, bright and cozy- like the point was to rethink the dorms, if I had a dorm like that I would be in love! Because not only is it not a concrete box and a mattress, but there’s enough space to put a poster or two, put out some trinkets and make the space yours- the only complaint is that there is not storage:(
I love how Patrick’s design incorporates the desk below the window, which is the perfect space for natural light and at the same time addresses the issue of the heating unit.
obsessed with the guy writing a whole ya novel to go along with his room. loved the vibe
As much as I love the calming space Laura created, those chairs cannot be sat on for more than 30mins. No comfortable studying is happen at those desks with those beautiful chairs :(
to be fair, all of their chair choices made my back cry in fear 😅
Yep! They’ve forgotten how much study they did at University
at least you have leg space! look at Xaviers pillow chair 😂
My thoughts exactly!
I feel like most people would sit on their beds anyway
Beyond style, as a College student, I think that if I had to live in Xavier's room, I wouldn't be able to study: it's cluttered, distracting, and absolutely impractical for managing study materials. Laura and Patrick, on the other hand, nailed it with their setup: Perfect colors for concentration, space for personal items, and excellent space management for the fornituers . I wouldn't know whom to choose between them.
did I miss the storage bit? drawers, wardrobe etc?
Only Patrick had storage underneath the bed...lol
Shush....this is just for clicks. None of the designs are in any way a reality for any kid going to college these days and zero colleges let you take furniture out of your dorm. It's comical really.
@suelyons531 I mean they weren't given an actual detailed brief, this whole thing is just for fun
The end of the semester is lot and lots of dust Xavier
Can this challenge be done again but keeping the dorm furniture. I was so looking forward to seeing what they would do.
I really like Laura’s design… only thing I’d change is a chair with higher back and better cushioning
And storage 😅
I love that Xavier designed this room that seemed pretty darned expensive and time-extensive to pull off and then mentioned something about college students not having any money. Really tickled me! I LOVE this series and wish AD released a new one every week.
Xavier is the only one who explained how a college student could source or make each element of his design.
@@immeremma except that a poor college student can somehow just find allllll those metres of velvet for the wall curtain!
ignoring the parameters of an actual dorm room, i would’ve loved patrick’s. i was a global studies major so the map wallpaper would’ve excited me. i also love that he’s the only one to make complete use of the wide windows for the desk wall. the cork and shelving is a nod to…the actual needs of a college student and the colors in the room are overall friendly.
laura’s for me doesn’t feel like a dorm; it’s way too mature for just about every college student imo. and xavier’s design is close to what my actual dorm looked like because my roommate and i had different aesthetic aspirations (lol)
Patrick's design didn't take the HVAC into account, though. Putting a desktop over it only traps the airflow, and I'm pretty sure is a no-go in a dorm room.
Laura's design is so pretty and functional. Patrick's design is bright, colorful and preppy, kind of like a Benneton ad. And Xavier's design is like his take on Wednesday and Enid's shared dorm room.
Patrick's design is thoughtful, much better than the others, he actually put bookshelves
Same thought. He also gave under bed storage.
Yeah his was definitely the most practical out of the three
And a desk by the window. That really makes a big difference.
People complain about designs not being “realistic” but this is the whole point! No clients, no budget! Loved Xavier’s!
I enjoyed the exercise in creative writing 😂
Reimagined spaces makes the mind challenge design norms. All three were interesting and shows interior design is diverse as the mind allows.
I always find he takes the challenge to the most amazing level
If its a dorm room with beds that means people gave to live the there. Or it's essentially a blank room.
Client: typical student
Budget: that of a typical student
I LOVE this series! I wasn’t super into Patrick’s until the very end, his finishing touches really pulled the whole room together and felt the most practical with the added storage drawers, but maybe not the most practical budget wise (but budget doesn’t matter in this series 😂). Laura’s was more of my preferred color pallet, but didn’t feel so much like a dorm. I loved the fabric hack - spending that money on fabric you can reuse I can get behind, but wouldn’t spend that on a peel and stick you’d have to throw away. Xavier’s was so funny to watch, I love the inspiration of the trope of princess vs punk and I loved the narrative. His was somehow practical and completely impractical all at the same time 😂 I loved it
who’s gonna tell Xavier ?
i mean they can do whatever they want so i get it, but it’s definitely not realistic lol
Fr it’s awful
I honestly hated everything he proposed, especially materials he used. And please stop with carpet… Many people have allergies nowadays and carpet make it worse.
dk i think it makes sense for art students lol
Patrick's feels very European and academic, Laura's is quite the wealthy kid lounge with little emphasis on academics, but lots more on happy hour, Xavier needed to make a decision, but honestly addressed the budget quite realistically.
I am in favor of Patrick's for sheer detail to why you are at college.
You read my mind
"I am in favor of Patrick's for sheer detail to why you are at college." As a young person, i'd not want that
I'm european and I think Patrick's looks the most american of them all.
The wallpaper had me LOL
@@canwejustnot I was in the UK for 5 years, reminds me of my dorm. Not with the wallpaper, but with the little shelves and focus on “sitting down and working” as an instructor told us.
When Xavier said Providence, I knew he was talking about RISD (the Rhode Island School of Design). I used to live in the area and once walked to their campus and saw how RISD students designed their want ads for roommates , etc. Those fliers were like works of art! It was hard not to take some of them down and frame them for myself.
Grew up in that era as well but that's not the usual aesthetics for students in dorms 😂
I think Laura and Patrick would have an amazing collaboration
I definitely prefer the desk location and bookshelfs of Patrick, but the vibe of Laura
do they not understand that all university furniture has to stay in the room the entire year???? there's so much you can do utilizing what's given that would actually be a creative challenge, and is actually on topic. this is just design a small apartment.
This whole show is kind of a joke. So basically they just decorated a room with stuff NO college kid could do under dorm parameters and most can't afford. Talk about tone-deaf.
@@suelyons531 That’s the point. “No clients, no restrictions” that’s literally the point. That’s why the rooms look like this and they replace everything. Because there is no real client or restriction. But most of these interior designers get carried away by the aesthetic and creativity rather than the function of the room
@@Lu.4327 i understand the point of the series, but every other video they still have to make what the room is. these aren't dorm rooms they're studio apartments.
@@browncesario Honestly my biggest issue is that they are literally not functional rooms (maybe Laura is the only one who thinks about the functionality) It would be better if AD made this series with like budgets included and more limits to really show the true creativity of interior designers and not just let them be with 0 restrictions.
@@suelyons531 Oh brother, way to miss the whole point of the series.
Xavier’s just pure chaos
I love Xaviour’s the most. These are for college students and when I was that age I would have loved that room especially being an art school student. The others look more conservative that some may prefer conversely
I used that liquid starch/fabric hack back in the 70’s! Works like a charm! Completely removable, just peel, then a light wash of the wall to remove the starch. Love Laura’s design. ❤
Xavier is wild, but he is free! As always, love this series!!
Sounds like a Lana Del Rey quote.
xavier lied on his resume
fr 😭
😂😂
He's creating a space that's supposed to feel as though it was hand crafted by warring art students. Being able to deliver that exactly is testament to his skill
😂😂😂 Indeed!
I think this is the first time that I’ve really loved all three designs. Xavier’s space looks like concept art for Wicked’s Elphaba and Galinda’s dorm room.
omg yesss !!
I REALLY wanted to see this challenge with Noz.
I wonder what kind of ghoulish dorm she had as a student (assuming she went to a dorm).
Yes! And Becky Carter, too.
I do miss Noz. I bet she would've created a whimsical room.
facxtrs si trye ong literally so like we need noxz where is noz like thats facxt tho. broi ius spoitting like bro fr fr fr fr ong 🙏🙏🙏 bring back noz BRINGBACKNOZ
I LOVE xavier's story it was so creative and fun and he actually used it to inspire every decision he made! plus all of his stuff being DIY/Ikea was way more realistic
I love Patrick's design! Very inspiring space, the light fixtures are next level.
I love how the designers were saying “we have to do x” so it’s not too permanent but they all went and got rid of the bunk beds which you can’t do in a dorm room I assume
Clever content but would rather have seen how designers worked with furniture provided . That's real life.
That’s the point of this series tho, forgetting restrictions so that they can do whatever they want
There's plenty of budget, diy, college content out there. This is about creative freedom.
@@chiraine1 But that usually doesn't exist at colleges. There's a difference between uncommon and "not possible"
Patrick, you nailed it! I would do that even on a kids bedroom. Laura, it's great, well thought, warm, beautiful and functional. I like the way you bring plants into spaces.
Xavier, what is that?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
well it does look like a KIDS bedroom
Creatively fun, but they should have had to use the existing furniture and adhere to all the dorm rules for materials, fire safety, etc. It may be a thought experiment, but it should be a realistic thought experiment. And while symmetry is calming in a small space, using different levels or bed positions would give each person more privacy.
I just want to know how the dormmates' rivalry in Xavier's room even started...like what happened on that first day that resulted in THAT design situation lol
I love that the guy that did the individualistic sides really went into the two extremes. He considered the functionality while still keeping the integrity of personality of the two “people” he was designing for. After all, realistically, sometimes you get two completely different people placed in a small space together. It’s a beautiful ode to individuality in a common space.
I liked Laura and Patrick’s designs
You need to do a video where someone with no design experience pretends to be one of the designers because at this point I don’t think I could tell the difference lol
It definitely feels like they did that for this video!
Love the room that Xavier Donnelly envisioned ! That's what they mean when they say 'no restrictions' !
exactly. people aren't ever understanding the theme of the series. it's not meant to be taken seriously enough to insult designers just because it doesn't match your taste 😵💫
Patrick's design is clearly the best here. He gave a bookshelf and under-bed storage for the students. The world map and thought board were very thoughtful too. Using the long workspace was clever and he gave comfortable study chairs. There are blinds available in case if the outdoor lights are too direct. And he did all by making it colorful and inviting, and not boring.
Where do they keep their clothes?
on the floor like the rest of the college kids
@@lewisj2au lol exactly 😆
Love how they said they hated the bunk beds. Prob cuz they’re older now and grew up. In my undergrad everyone loved the bunk beds. 😂😂
I loved Patricks design because of the desk around the window....as a student I get motivated studying at a window
This might be the most unhinged one so far, which, to be clear, is exactly why I love watching these videos
I’ve never heard of a college that would let someone completely switch out every piece of furniture like this…
I love Patrick-he’s so lovely, and he speaks with such warmth. He seems like such a humble, loving, sincere person.
I think Laura knows what she is doing. Both the gentlemen are imagining things.
I really liked Laura's design overall, yet I also liked Xavier's thought that roomies are not always going to agree on decor. I thought that Laura's design was calming. I really loved Patrick's map, but I would as a geographer. I am disappointed that none of them did anything about storage or a food station (fridge & microwave).
I don't think Xavier realises that in a room this small, you'd be mostly looking at the other person's aesthetic lmao
Patrick's room makes the most sense for a college student. Laura's room is beautiful but those beds and chair look so uncomfortable. As a student myself I could never sit and study on a chair like that for more than 30 minutes
Ok, unpopular opinion - all these designs are terrible. They actually don't save any space at all, have no storage space and each has totally uncomfortable chairs. If I were to choose, I would beg to get the primary one.
What in the chaos is going on in Xavier's room lol .I love Laura's dorm room design idea, it feels really peaceful ✨
I have no idea what they teach at the university where Xavier’s dormitory is located, but I wanna go there.
I love 2/3 of these… I won’t say which ones but I think everyone can figure it out for themselves
They really let anyone be an interior designer, huh?
I like Patrick’s the most because of the layout (desk under window!!!) and the storage under the beds lol 😂 I liked the colours in Laura’s
i don’t understand how xavier’s design has been getting the most compliments in the comments. sure it’s creative and unique but anyone who would be living in that dorm would get an instant headache.
I like Laura's design style...modern, tailored, and classic😊
please continue the series but also maybe add elements to it like "this is a greek house, keep the structure and style the same but design the interior your own way" prompt. or like an indian architecture, a british house etc. maybe even a dentist waiting area. would love to see everything. just please dont stop the series
I love xavier's idea !! It will be rare you have a roommate with the same taste lol
Xavier was obviously inspired by Wednesday and it was quite funny to me that he was explaining how that thing ended up there liked that 😂 love his playful smile and the twinkle in his eyes ❤ But Laura's dorm has to be my favourite and them relating to their dorms at the round table is so pure 😭
Love Laura's room! So calming!
Patrick for me. I love the long desk in front of the window, something rarely, if ever, seen in dorms.
I can tell these designers have never stayed in a dorm or don't remember what it's like to be a student 😂
I love the desk near the window
laura has the the most functional and practical design, but no for the chair. we will eventually get back pain if we sit on that chair for a long time to study. tall office chair is the best. on the hand, i like patrick's layout for the study space, i think it's more fun and refreshing to me if i can study near windows.
I think I would wake up screaming in Xavier's design. I didn't live in a dorm in college, but I did in the Air Force and I would have loved either Laura's or Patrick's design. And since you lived in those rooms longer and the rooms were a little larger and was only for one person, I could have easily did both of these designs and would have won dorm room of the month every month hands down.
I love this series, i also feel like people take the series a bit too seriously, so many people complaining about the dorm rooms loool. It's not really about the room, they are displaying their expertise, they get traction and exposure being on here for more clients, they are very aware about the restrictions of actual dorm rooms, but as they say EVERY EPISODE, No clients and no restrictions
The goal was to be practical yet fun. Laura's was boringly practical, Patrick's was fun, maybe even too much, and Xavier's was imaginative yet practical, loved the map wallpaper, placement of the desk, living room type of layout ❤
I think you got the two latter designers mixed up😂
I like to think in Xavier's desings as artistic creations more than real desgins. They're really creative
I actually think Patrick’s is the most practical storage wise and comfort wise (sitting & sleeping) it’s just not that aesthetically pleasing to have that map wall paper that kind of puts students in a box to what they can do with their walls. I wanted to pick Lauren’s because it’s so pretty and had a nice set up but there’s no storage capacity and that bed doesn’t look comfortable and neither do the chairs 😭
Team Patrick on this one. Peaceful yet alive with a pop of color on the daybeds. The map gives flight to the imagination. Well done.
Yes, I really like the muted colors he used. And the fact that he alone thinks on putting the desk near the window is very functional, atleast he considered the use of one and only window in that room though I'm getting very detailed 😅
If I were an art major or whatever the third guy is about, I’d be living off campus.
Xaviar's was INCREDIBLE !!! I LOVE his imaginative idea and character-creations - truly a joy to watch. He and Damon are so talented. and the others!
i don't know why people need to be rude just because they didn't like someone's design. these are meant to be "no restrictions", AD isn't going around asking for realistic designs, instead it's something you would create if you had no financial, spacial restrictions, expectations, requirements or judgements. Here its xavier, but I've seen in the previous videos people insulting becky and other designers just because their taste isnt matching the viewers'. the whole point of this series is to see three different povs on interiordesign. there's no point in doing the series if all three are contemporary and minimalist. let people be creative freely!
Xavier’s been heavily inspired by Wednesday’s dorm room clearly
The rug in laura's design actually made the room feel much larger. I do hope they had some limitations like must have a bed, study area, and storage
Hands down Laura is the winner here, her designs are simple and elegant.
So Xavier was inspired by Wednesday?
Thank you for validating how depressing dorms can be and also showcasing the value of interior design!
The lowering of the beds made it feel so much more intimate. In college my roommate and I had a similar kind of room but we turned it so I was the window side and he was closer to the door. Then we put the desks side by side between them because... it's way more comfortable to not have someone you barely know just kinda looking over at you while you sleep.
Laura and Patrick - yes.
Xavier - maybe got sponsored by a headache remedy company? Although I like that he clearly divided the room. Other than that, sorry to say, but his backstory sounds like overblown fan fiction, and the design followed suit.
"overblown fan fiction" - Ha! Maybe that's why I liked it; he's speaking my language!
I really wish they had called Darren and Noz back for this. They were my faves! Also, I really wanna have some of the stuff Xavier smoked before doing his dorm room 🤣
I was floored by Xavier’s storytelling
All three designs are so beautiful and inspiring!
I love the desk by the window!
I like the one with the map on the wall, clever to put the desk in front of the day light
I love that they thought about carpet and paper mache bedposts, but barely any thought at all into storage haha.
Xavier's Room: maleficent and sleeping beauty 😅
Accurate. 😂
I liked Laura's the best. But they all were nice. The world map wallpaper was cool!
The guy in the blue shirt wins all the way! That is a functional door room!
both guys are wearing blue shirts
One has a shirt, and one has a t-shirt.
They're both shirts, with out further explanation or specification there would definitely be some confusion.@@nataliaan
I like Patrick’s design. It’s warm, cozy and inspiring
inspires psychiatric regression
I had no idea about the corn starch thing!!
I ADORE the dueling styles room
A combination of Patrick and Laura's desgins would be the best. Love the desk and shelves by the window and Laura's colours and textures. They just need to give proper chairs to those students.
xavier was so cute trying to express all of his creativity I loved it
