      I think its mostly the heat that would be a problem. The hardware in the quest 2 is very similar to a phone. And when phone's play intensive games they heat up and limit performance to protect itself. I see your point tho, my laptop sucks without being hooked up to a charger. Maybe it would improve something?

    Quest app developer chiming in here. Boosting both CPU & GPU levels to 4 will only increase the minimum performance, not the overall maximum performance, and may end up doing more harm than good.
    The Quest already changes CPU & GPU levels between 2, 3 and 4 automatically and independently from each other, based on an application's workload at any given time. This allows for crucial moments where the GPU might be hard at work on level 4 while the CPU is almost idle at 2, which helps provide thermal headroom to sustain a GPU at level 4 for longer without thermal throttling (which will cause lag spikes).
    As an example, an underwater volcano experience we are currently building is designed to run on the Quest 1&2 in standalone mode at at resolution render scale of x1.5 @ 120fps or x2 @ 90fps, but in order to hold a steady framerate neither the CPU or GPU can ever be at level 4 at the same time, so each is carefully managed. But by simply overriding both minimum levels to 4, one would actually end up undoing all the hard work that went into balancing those levels.
    As a dev, changing levels manually is usually only done in anticipation of some heavy workload, so that there is no glitch while waiting for the hardware performance to ramp up. Hence why setting higher CPU or GPU levels is almost mandatory if you are going to overclock any texture or resolution setting beyond what any given app was designed to do. Just be careful not to assume that level 4 will always mean better performance is guaranteed.
    Funnily enough it's not even possible to set the GPU to level 4 from the developer side of things, only the CPU, and in our app we never even need to set the CPU or GPU higher than level 3 at any time. Even at level 3, the Quest can and will still automatically boost up to level 4 when it detects that an app needs more juice.
    I'm not sure why sidequest groups CPU & GPU level settings together like that, nor why they don't offer level 3. Someone should probably look into fixing that at some point before some poor soul melts a perfectly good headset...
    To check if an app is CPU or GPU bound and perhaps make a more informed decision about which to overclock, I would highly recommend using the OVR Metrics tool provided on the Oculus developer site.
    TLDR : Sustaining both CPU & GPU at level 4 at the same time is quite extreme. Sidequest should provide more granular options. Proceed with caution.

    “Draw distance” is a big factor in optimizing VR, or any game. VR seems more sensitive to it. If I fix the resolution to any Level using Sidequest I can’t play Pop One anymore (at least natively). • @smittyvanjagermanjenson182
      @smittyvanjagermanjenson182 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That would be the standard settings. No side quest needed. Any options you tweak are going to have harsh consequences. Increased fps = lower visual fidelity. Higher quality= battery drain+ choppier game play. Some apps completely override what you tweak, because they need to have a fixed balance for performance. It's not a PC, it's a mobile chip. They didn't design the quest 2 to be under powered on purpose, they gave it some extra headroom for devs to use when making apps, not for consumers to override for fun.

    • @JubulusPrime
      @JubulusPrime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on who you are and what you consider to be worse, lower battery or lower graphics? The quest 2 comes in a way where it is good at everything but I like it to be more for battery life so I lower the graphics, some one who doesn't play it as much as I do might think graphics are more important then battery life and higher the graphics, the original is the most balanced but you can either slightly change it or change it extremely if you want
      You can't boost everything but if you only change it slightly then what you want would be a little bit more and what you don't would only be a little bit less

    Nothing against you man, love the vids but it’s super frustrating that there’s never a video that’s like do x, y and x. It’s “change that until it works for you”. The quest 2 is the same hardware for everyone. I’d be better served by a video that says, I’ve tested all the settings, set it to this resolution and this gpu increase for stable gaming. If you’re connecting to pc vr, you can go a little higher etc etc. I mean thanks for telling us everything that’s been out there forever but figure out the combination that works in various scenarios or even per game. That would be a helpful video.

    Another thing to note with some titles is the post-processing: if the post-processing uses a texture... that texture also becomes reduced. This is why some footage also becomes blurry but not really.
    As for VRChat, this may vary. My avatar is already a single material and uses only 512x512 on the quest build. It's up to content creators to not make poorly optimized models or heavily rely on automatic decimation for the Quest. Even then, VRChat, or any platform that uses user-created content, can't perform that well due to lacking internal engine optimizations and managing memory in a weird, inefficient way.

    • @FlameSoulis
      @FlameSoulis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ...though, a bit of an after thought: if the Quest really benefits from texture size usages being reduced, this might be a hint for world creators to take note and focus on doing further geometry LODs to basically not use textures at all and rely on vertex coloring.

    There no need to mess with any of the settings imo. Sure bumping the texture res up sharpens the image up, at a massive hit to the FPS, which in many titles is already struggling to maintain even 60 FPS to begin with. Setting the CPU level to a forced state is also usless as the Quest already regulates this by default up to level 4 on its own when needed.

    Developer Hub for disabling the proximity sensor is great. If you have full body (slime, vive pucks, etc) disabling the sensor can help keep the Quest playspace from resetting itself when you take the headset off.
    Also Quest 1 WILL turn itself off if headset and controllers don't move over 5 minutes, regardless of auto sleep settings. Turning off proximity sensor keeps the headset on until battery dies, which is really nice for falling asleep in VRC (or watching movies).

    I was having issues with so many Jaggys on the oculus home and while trying to play F1 23. I've seen ppl say download this. Add yourself as a dev and so on and so forth.
    Now,I saw a video of one of the guys I follow on sim racing. His video was two yrs old and he showed to just get into the oculas app that you need on your PC regardless and showed the menu where you can bump the res and FPS.
    I did what he said and made sure that Steams VR res was at normal 100%
    After that I logged into F1 23 and bam!!! Clean AF.
    Got into the oculas world and notice the jaggys were a lot less and the boarders on everything was more full and slightly thicker.
    My question is.. what's the difference?
    Other than sidequest has more stuff for the tinker type. Is there a performance hit the way I did it vs this way ?
    I haven't noticed a hit, tbh but I'm just curious.

    I personally would go for higher resolution, I don't mind it as long as the frame rates are stable, it's easier to see things in VR and read text, I am still finding my VR footing. Is it okay to do this with Side Quest, it won't affect my Facebook account that's linked to the Quest 2? I've been hearing people say they can't access the Quest 2 due to account not being found or being banned. Make a video about quest game optimizer. I kind of think that dev did the community a favor but sidequest Shane doesn't like him. Make all these changes within the headset, GUI. Save settings per game, community profiles, automatically apply saved profiles when launching game from launcher or quest menu.

    Is there any difference between using debug commands on your phone/PC and Side Quest’s menu for increasing performance? I might be mistaken, but it looks like the same, It’s just the different way to do that. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be an idea to have vr related stuff to run at 24 FPS as this matches the human eyes 'fps', and there for possibly allowing for better performance and it would probably look more natural?, just a thought 🤔

      The optional headroom is for dev mode, ya know people actually make games. Essentially the quest 2 normal settings are optimal for what it is and can do. So you're correct and he's basically showed us that attempting to get more out of the hardware just comes with pretty negative impact.. not really a point in tweaking them.

    Is it that hard to make a colored passthrough for quest 2? i mean, why no one created a case for the quest 2 that covers the cameras and instead mounted on the case are coloured cameras? like, is it that hard to trick the quest to in to using other cameras rather that its own?

    If anyone could answer my following question I would appreciate it!
    If I were to set the GPU and cpu low on the headset and then use a link cable to play PCVR games would the graphics be effected? Like I want the battery to last longer and play PCVR games at 120hz and super high resolution? Could this theoretically work?

    So I put my quest 2's GPU/CPU levels to 4. It soon after prompted me on my quest 2 that my cooling system wasn't working properly. Is this due to the fact it was producing more heat now? I was wondering if this is normal, and can the heat affect the quest in any way? I have been getting these little white rain like particles after some use on beat saber. I'm a bit concerned and hope I didn't destroy my new quest. Also I've only had the headset for about a week now so any help would be much appreciated.
    Edit: I was reading through some of the comments and @JD 65 said it shouldn't. Anyone have a clue to as of why am getting these lil sparkly thingies? I haven't played it outside, only inside and uhh. Honestly not too sure what this is any help would be awesome.
