- The Coomloughra Horseshoe route encompasses the three highest summits in Ireland, including Beenkeragh, Carrauntoohil, and Caher, as well as a few others. We did this hike on a beautiful day by anyone’s standards, and it was certainly not the unsettled weather more typical of Macgillycuddy’s Reeks in County Kerry. The horseshoe shaped glacial valley surrounded by these three peaks contains 3 lakes, the largest of which, Coomloughra, gives the route its name. The Beenkeragh ridge is a "knife edge" ridge connecting Beenkeragh Mountain to Carrauntoohol, the highest summit in Ireland at 1040 meters (3414 feet). The ridge features scrambling and several "no-fall" zones and can be quite dangerous in windy weather or low visibility.
