- The Coomloughra Horseshoe loop is a ridge walk in the MacGillicuddy's Reeks around Lough Coumloughra that includes the 3 highest peaks in Ireland; Caher (East top), Beenkeragh, and Carrantouhill. The route is 12km long and takes about 6 hours to complete.
I got down late Friday night and camped out in the Hydro Road car park, where a trail lead onto the Hydro Road to start the hike. Once you get to the base of Lough Coumloughra you can take either a left or right turn to start the loop. Taking the left turn brings you clockwise around the loop, climbing Skregmore, before hitting Beenkeragh and Beenkeragh ridge. I took the right turn, going anticlockwise around the loop hitting Caher and Caher West before moving onto Carrantouhill.
The 3 highest peaks are the main attraction, but you ascend 5 peaks in total, including Skregmore and Caher West. I get a bit mixed up between Caher and Caher West in the video so don't quote me on anything here.
I was expecting a real challenge, but the weather made it a bit of a breeze. The Bones was the only really tricky part, and based on that I would not recommend it to most people, seems you can't skip it. There is a small path to one side of the bones, but it's still quite technical. If the weather was poor, this would have been a nightmare. If visibility is poor for the love of God don't go near it. I had perfect weather and I could have easily fallen off the edge a few times.
This was such a blast. I'm hoping to head back in late June/ July to do the full Macgillycuddy's Reeks walk, weather dependant of course...
Thanks,
'All that boney shit'. Saying it how it is. 😂
