There’s a lot of pictures of women in the 1950s in head scarfs. Topless cars- they didn’t want mess up their hair which, took hours to curl. My Grandma wore kind of a clear thing over her head instead of a hat when it rained.

    • @Kasiarzynka

You can still see elderly women wear handkerchieves on their heads in many places. And I just came across a TH-cam channel where a girl talks about how she started to wear one for aesthetic reasons, but then she realized how practical they are too, because she lives on a farm and it helps keep hair clean. Idk I just love the aesthetics too, like I'd wear a hijab actually covering my hair just for the aesthetics (I'm not a Muslim, or religious in general). But I'm still afraid of people's reactions. I think everything is for people, as long as it's a personal choice of free will. No one should be forced to wear or to not wear any kind of clothing, especially religious garments.

Some things are just as American as apple 🍏 pie , which is a hoodie . Unfortunately that scarf makes people think of war and repression.Your channel will diminish those fears but it will take awhile. American women don’t want to be veiled up, unless they are having a bad hair day; the culture is hedonistic . I’m surprised that your religion allows makeup to be worn; Anyway I like your message

I'm not sure that I think modesty is a virtue to be pushed on others. If you value it in yourself, great. And I really mean that. I'm happy for you; that you are doing you, and it's making you happy.
But I don't think that telling others how they should and shouldn't dress is appropriate. Especially, when you add modesty to the mix. Because when you make the accusation of lacking modesty, you are _implying_ impropriety or indecency. And that is demeaning.

So was it a part of the religion or just fashion?

    • @icarusgotooclose

@@msq5980 it was part of the culture and differed in different places in europe. The line between culture and religion can be very unclear and it's impossible to say how medieval people would have looked at it.
It didn't exist in a vacuum. All people wore head coverings at the time and they were supposed to say things about your class or occupation as well. If you look at old paintings peoples jobs are often identifiable by their headwear. This has stuck around with some particularly traditional roles like the pope and kings.
Mostly it transitioned into different head coverings and hats became common. A hat was considered essential to wear outside for both men and women through the 20s. Gloves usually too. You would be underdressed without them. It's a slow evolution of the tradition through time that is very interesting for fashion historians (again, religion and fashion are often linked so saying it was fashion does not mean it wasn't religiously important).
I think it mostly ended as a necessity with world war one and two, but in the fifties you probably still would have seen more hats.
It's not the same as the wimple/veil that was the popular head covering in the early middle ages but it is a clear evolution. The Arabic tradition just evolved differently and is, today at least, much more actively tied in with religious practice. J might be wrong but until recently Arabic men all covered their heads as well correct?

@@kavertia6261 if you want to stay in the religion and practice it you have to wear one. You cannot go into mosques and pray without a head covering. So if you don’t wear one, your not practicing the religion anymore. Also it isn’t “forced” but you’ll get lots of questions for why you aren’t wearing one. It’s not apparent in a secular country like Canada, but try to live in an Islamic state being muslim and not wearing a hijab. Also the religion is misogynistic, men can have 4 wives, and if you marry a muslim you need to convert to muslim. It’s not forced in Canada but in Islamic states non muslims cannot marry without converting, their children also have no choice, they are born muslim. So the problem with Islam is it’s tied with politics and law in Islamic States. There are a lot of laws like can’t drink alcohol, can’t eat non halal, can’t use contraception, can’t use non halal medication (like insulin using pig source). It’s way more than just a religion that keeps to itself.

Edit: sorry for the incredibly long text; I tried to shortly go into every point you mentioned but it seems that still took longer than planned.
Firstly, I find it a little interesting you went into stuff I didn’t ask about, but I do appreciate the non-aggresive response!
There are people of various religions that choose not to go to their respective religious houses; that doesn’t make them not religious, they can still be faithful and practice it, they just don’t do so publicly.
Questions are, well, fairly innocent. The problem would be the (possible) implied pressure behind those questions, but as you’ve already chosen to wander from the normal procedures, a decision that should’ve been thought through properly, my personal opinion is that you should already be prepared to face doubtful attitudes to some degree, and know where to draw the line.
On the matter of misogyny: I can’t disagree with you there, the placement of the man above the woman is problematic, however it should also be acknowledged that not all muslim men take advantage of their privileges, with some committing to live with only one wife, and treating her with respect. It might not be the largest margin, but it’s certainly a start.
Then you also mentioned that people in certain countries can’t choose whether or not to be muslim-they are born that way. Frankly though, the same counts for any religion, as well as nationality, until maturity. If you were born in a house where you pray to God before every meal, you’ll pray to God before every meal until you go live on your own or experience alternatives (if your parents allow you to behave differently at that point). With the growth of the internet, it has become more likely for people to get into contact with certain cultures. If you learn about that and choose to still be and act Muslim; that is a choice. If the goverment stops you from obtaining such information or stopping muslim practices, then therein lies the problem.
Lastly, the tight-knit relationship between religion and government is a problem, yes, but various islamic countries have already started bending some muslim practices to keep decent relationships with other countries, well-aware that that is a good way to do so. The separation of religion and government is a process, and it will take time. It is also, in my opinion, not the duty of outsiders to instigate that: If people, knowing how things *could* be, choose to keep everything as is, we should leave them to their choice. An outsider’s duty lies solely in providing the information we can, and learning from the information insiders give us. Besides, living in an islam-approved way is not necessarily the same as being muslim: I can live a life that fits into what a “good life” in Buddhism is, without being Buddhist. Same goes for any religion (not to say that forcing those things upon someone is in no way bad).

I got reminded of those sanatana dharma concepts listening to muslim theories. Feels like they're following bhakti towards formless God. Whereas we follow the path of bhakti only for the God we have given form to. We use meditation and yoga to access God in the formless state. Truly amazed at how islam theories don't seem new at all, coming from a background of varied beliefs within Hinduism. Muslims have thought me to be confident about Hinduism. When I see my Muslim friend wear hijab, I feel motivated to wear sindoor. I used to feel shy in expressing my belief before. I was considering wearing a veil for the months my hair grows out. I’m cree and in our culture we believe our hair to be our spirit growing out of us. And braiding out hair is a huge cultural thing too, each strand in a braid represents the mind, the body and the spirit. I recently went through many losses in my family so I cut my hair in ceremony and seeing how short it is a reminder of the loss, I’m ok with feeling that loss in private but in public I think I’m going to wear my big googoo scarves as veils. Maybe I’ll purchase one from you so I can switch it up a bit. Much love and respect ✊🏽

I am a Christian I believe that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, walked among men talking about the Kingdom of Heaven and Salvation, was wrongly accused crucified and died but arose on the third day. And he will come back again just as he said he would. Being that said the hijabs I see are absolutely gorgeous. And I love the idea of a woman wearing one. I don't wear one myself but let me tell you I have been looking at them and I would not mind wearing them I love the idea of the woman hiding away her beauty of her hair and keeping it for her husband and I think that's a beautiful thing.

Thank you so much for this video! I have a beautiful one from Pakistan I've been wanting to wear on hikes for warmth and covering, and did not want to seem like I was appropriating your culture or being insulting. Like many others I'm seeing in this thread, I am Christian, but was very blessed to have a culturally open-minded mother. I grew up with friends who were Hindu, Buddhist, and now working in the ER as a nurse, my closest doctor friend is Muslim from Pakistan. Between conversations with them, and finding your channel, it has really helped educate me on your faith and broadened my heart even more. You two are such a beautiful couple and it's wonderful you can share your faith and kindness! Thank you ❤ much love!

And my mom bought home these beautiful scarves because New York winter be cold lol and I remember her showing me different ways to wrap it and I would wear mines like this and put my hood over so I wouldn’t get cold .

One time in middle school we were having a talent show and a girl was doing a cultural dance while wearing a hijab, so i was sitting next to these two arabic girls who were complementing her hijab, and it looked really nice so i chimed in and said "ya i think its really pretty too" (mind you, im not arabic) and they both looked at me and said "well you're not arabic (or something along the lines of that) so you don't understand" i was just confused because to get fashion or to just complement someone you dont have to be the same religion, this made me feel embarrassed and innaprooriate for completing another girl's cultural clothing, but anyways this is off topic but i thought I'd share.

The saddest part about that is it probably means they’d been told by adults in their lives only people of the same culture as them could understand them. When in reality regardless of religion, culture, or complete lack thereof, tons of people want to be educated and accepting human beings.
But that was middle school so hopefully they’ve been surrounded by more opinions and more people as they grew up, so they know that now. Sorry you just tried to compliment someone and it left you confused! But hey I hope they’ve been able to have some growth with the people around them and world views they understand since then. 🙂
