Being in pal land, I was on the "couldn't care less" about the gcdual, no offense to the hard work and dedication it took to make it happen. But THIS I'm really excited for. Wii has always been the better option here and this is gonna make it even better.
@@Katana2097 shocked to hear this! Always glad to learn. So what about the Wii did your TVs have component? Are you locked on a console side or TV side?
Aleem Abdul yeah we had component and S-video. Most people used composite though, like the US. So not only did we have crappy PAL games but we had crappy video output options. Component is generally decent though but still no RGB!
In all fairness, the PS3 also came with a composite video cable as well. They did this with the hope that you'd buy a $25 Sony Component cable for it as most stores were gouging customers wit $150 HDMI cables in 2006.
If you want an improve PS2 image , you could use a PS2 emulator and play PS2 games on a PC. I played Dragon Quest VIII at launch on the PS2, and for nostalgia I played it again on a PS2 emulator last year, it looked great on 720p and 1080p. The only downsides was that I needed a good PC and graphics card, also I couldn't played it from my couch (because of the location of my PC). Otherwise, it was a great experience, also save states allowed me to progress in the Monster Arena faster that I would without save states.
+jomunoz, if you're going to bring emulation into this, you might as well throw the whole video out since Dolphin is king. Playing Super Mario Bros Wii on my PC is really nice, I struggle looking at it running on official hardware now because of it.
I bought at the time a Wii2HDMI adaptor and we have much better image than component cable. Tested and comproved by me. How well does this mod stands side by side with wii2hdmi?
I may be in the minority on this since most enthusiasts think that sharper pixels are better, of course I also think that this depends on the types of game you are playing on the WII. 240p Component to my CRT looks fantastic. On the flip side, for say a game like Donkey Kong Country Returns, I use a generic WII HDMI adapter paired to the M-Cable. The M-Cable not only upscales to 1080P but also adds anti-aliasing and makes the game look like it came out on a much more modern system. Regardless, I think that all of these options are great and appreciate getting to see them in this video.
I never understand that "the more pixels you see the better" attitude, honestly. Putting a lot of money in retro consoles equipment to obtain an image totally different to what the designers originally intended and call it "perfect" is nosense to me, but to each his own.
@@shiva_MMIV It's not at all a totally different image in most cases, not in the way you're implying in which the game is now a drastic departure from the game designers' intentions. Often times it's to get a cleaner image out of a console with the stock less-than-optimal output due to cost-cutting measures when the hardware was conceptualized. The Wii just straight up has a cheap DAC with worse Component signal output than its predecessor and bringing it up to par is not changing the games in any manner worth complaining. On an otherwise identical setup, Gamecube games look quite a bit worse on the Wii than using an actual Gamecube. Virtual Console titles, such as SNES games, looks worse than playing them on an unmodified RGB-capable SNES, because of the ugly artifacts and added blurriness of the Wii's signal. Where I would agree with you is something like using N64 mods to disable anti-aliasing or Gameshark codes to remove the texture filtering -- which does fundamentally change the intended artistic look and aesthetics of those titles to more resemble PS1/Saturn games. But striving for actual good signal quality (that should have been possible at the time!) over the poor output that made it into the system because of price-focused hardware compromises is not the same thing and should not be outright dismissed.
@@megalon84 When I was talking about retro consoles I was talking more about the likes of the Megadrive or the NES, to me the Wii is not old enough to consider it retro ;-) Also, I'n not a fan of the big N design decisions, if they can save a cent in the manufacturing costs they'll do it, but perhaps the more smooth output compared to the GC was an intended effect, after all they knew that the wii was going to be connected mostly to HD flat panels.
@@shiva_MMIV It's not smoother output, it's a cheap DAC with worse output quality and it's obviously not intentional. If the intent was smoother output they would have utilized some sort of bilinear/smoothing filters like they did for N64 hardware or on the Wii U with certain Virtual Console games. There's no sense in guessing that they perhaps did this on purpose when we know that's not true. I was talking about the Wii because this is a video about the Wii and the person you originally responded to was talking about the Wii, so... Wii itself is 12 years old now. That's plenty old. In 2008, N64/PS1/Saturn were already retro (12+ years old by that time). If you go back further, mid-to-late '80s consoles were already considered retro by the time we reached 1998, making them about as old as the Wii is now. All consoles become retro with the sufficient passing of time, usually 10+ years, not due to one's personal feeling.
@@shiva_MMIV These 480p games are highly susceptible to getting chewed up by upscaling and I have yet to see a good enough implementation outside of dolphin. Unless you're viewing it on a 480p native screen it's gonna look weird.
I checked, and it said the last preorder would ship in August (I think they are talking about 08/20, not 08/21) unfortunately. Your best option is to get HD retrovision’s component cables to use with a Wii or Wii U, they’re a lot better than generic ones.
Wow that's very lucky of you! I would definitely love to get this mod but I'm sure the hardware kit is going to be pricey. Also, I don't have the skills or tools needed to mod my wii anyway. I guess I'll just have to stick with component cables
Sooo, chroma subsampling artifacts are still there? This is what kills any HDMI output for me on GC/Wii - the greenish/pinkish halos that permiate throught the games. These are smoothed out on analog outputs but stand out like a sore thumb on clear digital outs. Try No More Heroes 2 start screen for a truly ugly artifact mess
Isn't the custom firmware with BAC's GCvideo adapters/mods supposed to upsample to 4:4:4? Not sure how effective it is, but I got tired of waiting and grabbed the Eon adapter during an ebay 20% off day. Luckily I only notice it on my Eon GCvideo adapter if I really look for it, and more so on Gameboy Player titles.
Dan does superb work! Big fan of his GCDual and and sounds like this would finally be a reason for me to get a Wii. I had went all out Sony fanboy when the PS3 hit, and so I missed out on both the Wii and Wii U.
My TV can only output 4:3 image when gaming mode (so low latency) is off. Does this output 4:3 in a letterboxed 16:9 image? also, I'm in PAL region so I wonder if it's easy to let someone install this..
Well, there is one reason to enable scanlines on a CRT screen: When playing on a VGA computer monitor. :D The image quality can easily be compared to BVM and PVM screens under the right conditions and via Component- or HDMI-to-VGA-conversion. Getting back to an analog VGA signal is not really a loss when you use proper shielded cables and computer monitors will also scale properly with various resolutions (a very huge advantage against modern LCD/digital screens).
I would love to get my hands on the kit, but I'm sticking with what the stock Wii have to offer. This is great and all, but the price is killing me with all the other mods I've done. The Wii Stock Graphic is nice enough.
Thanks so much! The Rust In Peace guitar is heavily customized with hand-woen pickups. The bass is stock, but it's this one: www.notreble.com/buzz/2014/08/16/ibanez-introduces-peter-iwers-pib3-5-string-bass/
My whole setup is RGB modded systems via Scart through a crosspoint. So i consider myself pretty into this world. Seeing the side/side, this may be the first system i'm actually ok with just leaving at component. I have a nice component set and i just don't think the jump is high enough to justify the cost and the effort to actually do the work. I'm also lazier about the whole setup now than i was a few years ago :)
The HDMI out on that thing looks like it has the contrast too high by default and component out looks too dark. RGB looks fine though but this seems strange.
Kinda wish it had the video options DCHDMI had. It would make this more of a no brainer for sure. The 480p HDMI out is kinda begging for an external integer scaler that doesn't exist.
The dchdmi is for the dreamcast right? Do you know what the internal resolution is with that mod? Is it still 480p but the output is 1080p? Or is it like dolphin where it changes the internal resolution to 1080p? Would that even be possible?
It still generates what the original game generated. It just scales the output. Maybe it would be possible to increase the internal res but that'd be a lot of work for sure.
I use RetroTINK (running Wii at 480i). I have the early Japan GC compatible version. It will be interesting to see how this new HDMI adaptor performs as it accepts 480P signal from Wii, and of course, the retail price is US$20 more than RetroTINK.
Bob, what do you like to use for 480i? Ossc pass thru to your oled? Ossc BOB? Framemeister? Crts only? As for the wii dual it sure isn't cheap but you can count me in for one. Looks like it's going to run almost $200 for a kit, installation, and rgb scart cable. I ignored the wii during its prime. With the mod slightly bumping up the quality I think now is the time to tackle the wii library.
Personally, I try everything to avoid 480i. ISO patches, hardware mods, anything I can do. Then if I'm stuck with 480i, I try to play on a CRT....but if I have to play on a flat-screen, I'll usually try the TV's deinterlacing first, then "settle" on BOB deinterlacing. It doesn't look bad and I love that no log is added, but there's still some flicker. Adding scanlines sometimes helps.
The direct answer to your question is here: www.retrorgb.com/virtualdub.html ...but I really suggest checking over the entire video capture section, including the videos. It's a LOT of (probably boring) information, but it might be a big help: www.retrorgb.com/videocapture.html
To be honest, the HDMI looks not really good. The component looks better. A Wii2HDMI vs HDMI Mod comparison should be good to see the differences, because im using this converter since 5 years, and it looks fine in upscaled 720p. But keep going, your videos are really nice dude, i love them. Hello and Thank you from France!
This would be better than Wii2HDMI since that's converting an analog signal that's already been converted from digital back to digital again. This is directly from the digital source. He touches on this in the video.
there is probably stuff we can do with the vwii through methods of homebrew, I mean the wii u has been open for awhile, I highly doubt it's impossible to configure it to be the best way to play wii.
vWii works fine, but like he said in the video sometimes the upscaling just doesn't work well. It's noticeably worse quality than a stock Wii. Still, it's another option and the majority of casual players are not going to notice.
While I can see the merits of this mod, as you said at the end, it's only for people who REQUIRE the absolute best digital output from their consoles for streaming and/or other videos. Not something I would buy, but may be worth it for others. Love the case, though.
Great review! Did you get a chance to compare the Wii Dual HDMI output to the OSSC HDMI output at the same resolution? (e.g., 240p/480p) I'm assuming the Wii Dual would have a slight edge due to digital-to-digital, but would be interesting to see how they compare.
The Wii Dual's RGB output through the OSSC is shown in the 960p demo, right before we get into menu options. It looks awesome! If you're splitting hairs, you'll always get a "cleaner" signal when it's digital-to-digital, but it looks great.
Sorry, should have clarified my question. I meant the HDMI output of a Wii w/ Wii Dual vs. a *stock* Wii w/ OSSC. I'm sure they both look great but would be interesting to see.
Hi, I have a quick question about the Wii. I own a Japanese Wii but I live in Europe, your website recommends to use component cables for NTSC Wii's but European CRT's do not have component input, only SCART. Can't I just use a SCART cable meant for a PAL Wii on a J-Wii?
Keep in mind when the Wii came out, HDMI was still not the standart port to use. Even the PS3 a console that came out later than the Wii was packet with a composite cabel, if you wanted to use an HDMI cabel on the PS3 you would need to go in the store and buy one.
I have a white we hooked up to a CRT via component, and A black Wii hooked up in the living room via component on a 4K TV. The black Wii on the 4K TV is pretty blurry. That's understanding since the TV is 4K My question is.... is the WIIDUAL kit worth getting since im using it on a 4K TV, or will it not make much of a difference and still be blurry Regardless?
Thanks for the Wii U to Wii comparison - I *knew* Skyward Sword looked much better on the original Wii with component cables than the Wii U's terrible HDMI output! Also this is a great project, not sure I care enough about the quality to get that boost, but certainly good to know the option is out there.
Just out of curiosity i popped New Super Mario Bros Wii into my Wii U and it doesn't look anywhere even close to what i've seen in this video; On the contrary, It's almost identical to the left picture; That capture from Wii U looks like something with incorrect HDMI black levels would look like; Different board revisions? I saw this mod on Reddit the other day, even signed up to Reddit to comment. I wanted 1 of those Ultra HDMI md kits, but every time I look on the sites that sell it, its always out of stock. Do you think these will be more readily available?
Great video. I am fairly sure that "outputted" isn't a word, though. Also, it looks like the Wii is set to 16:9 output and the display/capture device isn't. Things are squished horizontally (too narrow), looks like.
fun fact: you dont have to do this to get better component quality out of a wii anymore thanks to a patch by extrems, its available under "480p pixel fix" on usb loader GX and every new version of nintendont after early 2019 the reason component looks soft is because of a bug in the wii's SDK that affected every piece of software developed for the wii
I covered this three years ago: www.retrorgb.com/wii-480p-video-bug-discovered.html ...and a digital-to-digital HDMI mod will ALWAYS be a slight improvement over analog to digital.
@@RetroRGB Bob this is great and all, but Wii Dual is no where to be seen. I have an Ikegami 1990r and an Extron wired to feed RGB to all my consoles, minus the NTSC Wii's RGB signal which my Ikegami dislikes. My only hope is Wii Dual but I don't know if that mod will ever rerelease again.
i found out the pixel fix just doesnt work on any other revision of the wii outside of the launch model, and also i recently installed my wii with an ave-hdmi mod lol
Whilst that thing look really good, I bought a little gadget off amazon that just plugs into the back of the Wii and does the analogue to digital conversion to HDMI, it cost £7/$9 and it looks great on a 4k huge screen, good enough to play and no interference. I always felt like the Wii U's HDMI output looked off when it came to 480p content, glad to know it wasn't just me
I think 480P over component still holds up decently enough. That said, I am VERY excited for this.
Being in pal land, I was on the "couldn't care less" about the gcdual, no offense to the hard work and dedication it took to make it happen. But THIS I'm really excited for. Wii has always been the better option here and this is gonna make it even better.
Aleem Abdul not all PAL regions were as lucky for analog options as Europe though... New Zealand didn't have RGB SCART as standard :(
@@Katana2097 shocked to hear this!
@@Katana2097 my thoughts and prayers go out to you
I'm from PAL Land (specifically Europe) too.
"Hey, this looks neat, let's see if my Wii is compatible"
tl;dr it's not... wohoo
Hop on ebay and buy a black one with Gamecube ports.
@@GT6SuzukaTimeTrials a white one works too.
In all fairness, the PS3 also came with a composite video cable as well. They did this with the hope that you'd buy a $25 Sony Component cable for it as most stores were gouging customers wit $150 HDMI cables in 2006.
It would be really nice if they offered a cheaper analog-only version of this mod, since the analog video output is still clearly improved.
When is something like this finally coming to the PS2
If you want an improve PS2 image , you could use a PS2 emulator and play PS2 games on a PC.
I played Dragon Quest VIII at launch on the PS2, and for nostalgia I played it again on a PS2 emulator last year, it looked great on 720p and 1080p.
The only downsides was that I needed a good PC and graphics card, also I couldn't played it from my couch (because of the location of my PC).
Otherwise, it was a great experience, also save states allowed me to progress in the Monster Arena faster that I would without save states.
The PS2 already supports EuroSCART natively. Whats good about this Wii mod is it lets you play gamecube games using EuroSCART in NTSC regions.
+jomunoz, if you're going to bring emulation into this, you might as well throw the whole video out since Dolphin is king.
Playing Super Mario Bros Wii on my PC is really nice, I struggle looking at it running on official hardware now because of it.
@@Gamesfan34260 Texture packs make it even better, Super Mario galaxy 2 and xenoblade in particular
Emulation is great but I think most people here want to play their games on original hardware.
I bought at the time a Wii2HDMI adaptor and we have much better image than component cable. Tested and comproved by me. How well does this mod stands side by side with wii2hdmi?
i bouhght one too and it works great 5 bucks is not even expensive
its mostly because new tv's treat analog video like crap, between this and that is like no difference.
i got that adapter and there is a 2 second delay ... its unplayable, im pulling my old tv out of the loft to play the wii again.
@@Boemel lmao no
my wii2hdmi stopped working in 2 hours, i wish i was lying.... :( (I spent 11 dollars on it)
I may be in the minority on this since most enthusiasts think that sharper pixels are better, of course I also think that this depends on the types of game you are playing on the WII.
@@megalon84 When I was talking about retro consoles I was talking more about the likes of the Megadrive or the NES, to me the Wii is not old enough to consider it retro ;-)
Also, I'n not a fan of the big N design decisions, if they can save a cent in the manufacturing costs they'll do it, but perhaps the more smooth output compared to the GC was an intended effect, after all they knew that the wii was going to be connected mostly to HD flat panels.
Oh my god that jungle green Wii looks fantastic
Do they still sell this kit or similar? I went to the website and I didn't see an option to buy it. Any recommendations?
I checked, and it said the last preorder would ship in August (I think they are talking about 08/20, not 08/21) unfortunately. Your best option is to get HD retrovision’s component cables to use with a Wii or Wii U, they’re a lot better than generic ones.
I noticed that edges of text and characters appear green.
Dan is a very nice person! I'm getting myself a pre modded Wii from him and it should arrive by the end of the month!
Wow that's very lucky of you! I would definitely love to get this mod but I'm sure the hardware kit is going to be pricey. Also, I don't have the skills or tools needed to mod my wii anyway. I guess I'll just have to stick with component cables
So can we get sync on green out of the wii now? Amazing :0
Kjeld what’s that mean to get sync on green?
Great video, Bob! Looking forward to seeing more about this board (and snazzy Wii shells) in the coming months.

My TV can only output 4:3 image when gaming mode (so low latency) is off.
Does this output 4:3 in a letterboxed 16:9 image?
also, I'm in PAL region so I wonder if it's easy to let someone install this..
Man I love your channel!
Okay, is it me, or does the HDMI output seem to have more colorbleed than on component?
I love your channel bro! Keep up the awesome work and stay healthy

Videos are getting better and better man!! Keep it up. Thanks for all the hard work.
Damn that's a nice case that green Wii is dope
Subscribed to your channel this is super informative as I almost bought a Wii U for reasons I thought would bet better than modding the Wii
Well, there is one reason to enable scanlines on a CRT screen: When playing on a VGA computer monitor. :D
The image quality can easily be compared to BVM and PVM screens under the right conditions and via Component- or HDMI-to-VGA-conversion. Getting back to an analog VGA signal is not really a loss when you use proper shielded cables and computer monitors will also scale properly with various resolutions (a very huge advantage against modern LCD/digital screens).
Very great video. I like your charisma and the style of doing these vids. Keep it up!
This is a pretty cool little solution for the Wii. To be honest, though, it's not one I see myself investing in.
Yaassss, been waiting for someone to get their hands on this! This looks great!
Whelp. Looks like I found the perfect Gamecube RGB solution...
I would love to get my hands on the kit, but I'm sticking with what the stock Wii have to offer. This is great and all, but the price is killing me with all the other mods I've done. The Wii Stock Graphic is nice enough.

so you can use scart on an ntsc wii now? does this on work on pal?
My whole setup is RGB modded systems via Scart through a crosspoint. So i consider myself pretty into this world. Seeing the side/side, this may be the first system i'm actually ok with just leaving at component. I have a nice component set and i just don't think the jump is high enough to justify the cost and the effort to actually do the work. I'm also lazier about the whole setup now than i was a few years ago :)
The HDMI out on that thing looks like it has the contrast too high by default and component out looks too dark. RGB looks fine though but this seems strange.
@27:18 mentioned watching some other reviews but there was no popup for anything. Was the video/channel removed?
Love your t-shirt ! :)
Really good vid Bob! As usual.
Nice to know there r still some legends playing wii
All Japanese models are compatible with GameCube games. The Wii Family Edition and Wii Mini were never released in Japan.
ZERO LAG? SHARPER SCREEN? COUNT ME IN!!
I’m just waiting for a native 1080p Wii that can play CTGP Revolution
Better use dolphin if you want native 1080p

@@RetroRGB I miss Jesper but still my favorite along with Shadows Fall
Hey RetroRGB, what is your opinion on the green transparent case for the Wii? Does the case quality still hold up compared to the original case?
It was a little thinner, but looked really cool.
While I can see the merits of this mod, as you said at the end, it's only for people who REQUIRE the absolute best digital output from their consoles for streaming and/or other videos. Not something I would buy, but may be worth it for others. Love the case, though.
Is that a holy wars guitar from megadeth. Hell yeah!!!
Yes, heavily modified. Thanks for noticing!
Great vid, keep up the great content!
You could, but you would limit your video output to 480i. Which would look fine on a CRT, but not on a flat panel.
@@RetroRGB i have all of my retro gaming set up around a single CRT so thats fine, thanks for the response
the wii should've been shipped with hdmi from the factory tbh
It should have done 720p, then we wouldn't be in this mess
Keep in mind when the Wii came out, HDMI was still not the standart port to use.
Even the PS3 a console that came out later than the Wii was packet with a composite cabel, if you wanted to use an HDMI cabel on the PS3 you would need to go in the store and buy one.
It didn't make sense for the Wii at launch. But theres no excuse for the relatively poor output on the Wii U
What a bummer, just checked and I've got a RVL 01 board
I have a white we hooked up to a CRT via component, and A black Wii hooked up in the living room via component on a 4K TV.
The black Wii on the 4K TV is pretty blurry. That's understanding since the TV is 4K
My question is.... is the WIIDUAL kit worth getting since im using it on a 4K TV, or will it not make much of a difference and still be blurry Regardless?
A really, really needed upgrade. Great!
My modded wii has many of these faulty pixels, would have to check if my other one is a better revision so it would be worth hard and soft modding it
I don't see any screenshots in the link in the annotation at 5:34?
0:35 WOW HOLD ON A SECOND! How did you make your wii like that? I love it😍
Thanks for the Wii U to Wii comparison - I *knew* Skyward Sword looked much better on the original Wii with component cables than the Wii U's terrible HDMI output! Also this is a great project, not sure I care enough about the quality to get that boost, but certainly good to know the option is out there.
Just out of curiosity i popped New Super Mario Bros Wii into my Wii U and it doesn't look anywhere even close to what i've seen in this video; On the contrary, It's almost identical to the left picture;
That capture from Wii U looks like something with incorrect HDMI black levels would look like; Different board revisions? I could try to get my hands on a Wii for a direct comparison with my Wii U;
Interesting - it may be the black level, Wii games do look more "washed out" with the Wii U, which would explain that.

Any way to get this in Brazil? I really suffer with the bad output signal from the Wii and I would do this asap.

Great video. I am fairly sure that "outputted" isn't a word, though. Also, it looks like the Wii is set to 16:9 output and the display/capture device isn't. Things are squished horizontally (too narrow), looks like.
fun fact: you dont have to do this to get better component quality out of a wii anymore thanks to a patch by extrems, its available under "480p pixel fix" on usb loader GX and every new version of nintendont after early 2019
the reason component looks soft is because of a bug in the wii's SDK that affected every piece of software developed for the wii
I covered this three years ago: www.retrorgb.com/wii-480p-video-bug-discovered.html
...and a digital-to-digital HDMI mod will ALWAYS be a slight improvement over analog to digital.
I don't think I would buy one of these kits for $120 for just a little bit better picture.
The issue with the converters is that they tend to have a delay and/or don't scale well. This mod is really only for pretty dedicated players
I agree that this is more aimed at dedicated players, I am not one of those, just a casual player with the kids. But I have seen no delay and the upscaling to 1080p seems pretty good to me but not sure if the 4k TV is helping with the scaling. At $120 though it's worth more than my Wii is with all the accessories. :)
Sorry if this has been answered, where is the green shell from?
Will the kit work with all Wii models? I wanna use this with the original Wii model (which can play GameCube games)
Nope, it's all explained in detail in the video.
is the chromatic aberration inherent to the wii or it has something to do with the capture settings? (e.g. 5:05)
I royally screwed up both the capture and rendering. I'm very sorry about that and plan on doing a follow-up video this year that's just comparison footage. The conclusions stand true though.
Hello, I looked through quite a few comments, but I didn't see one where someone asked what CRT you have. I would like to know if possible, thanks!
