This is not a lazy method it is a smart method. I just got back from buying a smaller storage container to start a compost bin on my balcony. I tuned into your video while I took a break. I couldn’t imagine trying to turn soil in a bucket without getting frustrated. Thank you for explaining how to prepare the storage bin, and about using natural ashes in the compost. I was sure going to use some of that charcoal you said not to use. I’m glad I watched your video before I added that stuff. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

I read through so many guides and watched so many videos on how to DIY a compost bin from a tote, and your video does the absolute best job of explaining WHY each step is important and HOW to do it correctly. Thank you for being such a great instructor! I feel a lot more confident in starting my DIY composter.

PRO TIP: Put a few small rocks at the front of the bin so there's a gap about a mm so worms that travel on the top of the earth, will find cover and then start working their way up for you. Reason I say this is, we all know what happens to planter bottoms when you lift them up or move them... This hide out spot where they will gravitate to, will make it easier for them to find the holes in your planter! -cheers

Professional tip homie…..over in Idaho, there is potato farmers that farms that are literally miles wide and miles long. REST ASSURED they do NOT dog out their entire garden and replace the dirt every year. That’s damn ridiculous!!!
You CAN reuse the dirt!! Just grow a good nitrogen fixing over crop for the winter. Like wheat grass. Then till it in in the spring.

  • @Omegawerewolfx

I do the even lazier man's method. I have less, way less holes, in my tote. I fill the tote all summer and top it off in August and again in November and then I don't touch it until May or June. I have the totes in a spot that gets winter sun. I might water them once or twice if I remember. Super lazy, takes forever, but the cycle works for me.

Also worry about the stink because my neighbors yard is close by to the container.
Will the cockroaches get in through the holes and multiply in my yard. Our community has had way too many outdoors in the drains this summer.

Great video! I live in DFW area, so it is hot here most of the year, and this is the best compost method for me. I might add that I use the manual tiller from Amazon to mix it. I also tried to compost in a 32 gallon trash can, but it was very inefficient, too deep. 40-50 gallon bins are the best for me.

Won't rain get in through the top holes, and make everything really wet most of the time?
It looks like you're just leaving yours outside all year long - even through the winter. I worry if things will come to a halt around here - we get some below zero temps during our cold NorthEastern winters ....

Good vidio, thank you. Like to know since plastics is bad for us, do chemicals no bleach out and contaminate stuff? Especially when it gets hot. Cancer is linked to water bottles leaching chemicals in the water, especially when they are left in the car ect. Just a thought. 🙄

    • @OldMcWaller
      @OldMcWaller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The materials in of this plastic is food grade. You are producing a compost which is a growing medium. You are not directly consuming the compost like you would in with the water. But if you don't feel comfortable, use another method. That's the great thing about gardening. There's always more than one way to do things.

@@OldMcWaller absolutely, yes more ways. Just concerned, coming from Germany we use little plastic (not to much from China, like $stores ect.) Just learning, not a challenge my friend. We in Europe has many chemicals forbidden , that the FDA alowes in the US, amazing, Thank you again, stay well and healthy.😘🙏✌

@@myfivestarrealty Start with a pile. Get some chicken wire and make a big circle about 3 feet across. Dump a bunch of leaves in there then start adding your food scraps. It will work and you can be worry free. :-)

Can anyone clarify the ratio of greens and brown I should add? I have 3 spoons of coffee grounds and about 4 egg shells I can add everyday but not sure how much brown to balance that.

Wish i had seen this video years ago. I bought a tumbler. It does work but most of the good nutrients drain out of it way too quickly when it's time to keep it moist. So i have a bucket under to collect the compost tea. I save it and add it to the areas I'm going to plant in over fall and winter even over the snow to help get that area nutrients to soak in the existing ground. Also i don't get as much compost as i need. I have these same totes so this is a game changer for me 5 years later😊 late is better than never so thank you so much!!

Great ideas but what about introducing earthworms? You could drill holes in the bottom of the totes, sit on bricks or just a couple inches off the ground and earthworms will make their way up through the holes. They decompose and help aerate the compost.
