I read through so many guides and watched so many videos on how to DIY a compost bin from a tote, and your video does the absolute best job of explaining WHY each step is important and HOW to do it correctly. Thank you for being such a great instructor! I feel a lot more confident in starting my DIY composter.
Wish i had seen this video years ago. I bought a tumbler. It does work but most of the good nutrients drain out of it way too quickly when it's time to keep it moist. So i have a bucket under to collect the compost tea. I save it and add it to the areas I'm going to plant in over fall and winter even over the snow to help get that area nutrients to soak in the existing ground. Also i don't get as much compost as i need. I have these same totes so this is a game changer for me 5 years later😊 late is better than never so thank you so much!!
Professional tip homie…..over in Idaho, there is potato farmers that farms that are literally miles wide and miles long. REST ASSURED they do NOT dog out their entire garden and replace the dirt every year. That’s damn ridiculous!!! You CAN reuse the dirt!! Just grow a good nitrogen fixing over crop for the winter. Like wheat grass. Then till it in in the spring.
I am sooooo glad that I not purchased a compost bin/tumbler/etc. I was even considering that Bokashi method. But I don't have the ground or extra raised bed to trench it. I can do this! Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!
This is not a lazy method it is a smart method. I just got back from buying a smaller storage container to start a compost bin on my balcony. I tuned into your video while I took a break. I couldn’t imagine trying to turn soil in a bucket without getting frustrated. Thank you for explaining how to prepare the storage bin, and about using natural ashes in the compost. I was sure going to use some of that charcoal you said not to use. I’m glad I watched your video before I added that stuff. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I’m so glad that I found this because building a compost bin does not seem easy. I’ve purchased my bins, added the holes to one of them and started adding my nitrogens and carbons. I am excited to see it develop. Thank you!
It is going great. I’ve stored my compost in a second bin and started my second batch. I want to try leaf composting soon. It’s suppose to be a 3 week process.
I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can before starting and felt very intimidated/overwhelmed by literally every video so far, till yours. This is the MOST comprehensive guide! I will be starting mine tomorrow :) Thank you so much for this! 🙏🏼
Trying to get all the info I can. Since your comment is a year old can you tell me how it went?? I'm a senior and very limited on my physical abilities so I need something small and easy
I love how simply you break this down. I also was overwhelmed and intimidated to try composting after watching several other videos. Thank you so much for sharing!!
I do the even lazier man's method. I have less, way less holes, in my tote. I fill the tote all summer and top it off in August and again in November and then I don't touch it until May or June. I have the totes in a spot that gets winter sun. I might water them once or twice if I remember. Super lazy, takes forever, but the cycle works for me.
I bought a bin to start composting on my patio. It's the same one you use but I had no idea where to begin. After watching your video I know exactly what to do with it. Thank you and I will keep watching your channel!!
Unless the containers are air tight you may not even need to drill holes if you're giving it a stir every week or so and managing moisture inside with what you're adding. Currently have a tall trash can I'm composting in, but I really like the use of the wide bins in the video for ease of access.
i know this video is rather old, but i just wanted to say thank you for being so straightforward and helpful with your videos! i'm very inexperienced as a gardener and it's hard to find videos that keep beginners in mind sometimes. i started my composting tote today based off of your video. looking forward to it. thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for the tips! I just started composting today. I got my bins and my food scraps and I put grass clippings and leaves on the bottom, food in the middle. Exciting to finally get composting!
I was also intimidated, you are awesome at explaining everything. Ive been wanting to start composting for at least two years and just didnt know where to start. You have helped me so much with clarifying everything. Awesome video! Thank you! Hopefully one day ill have a huge pile of compost like you!
Thanks for sharing your great experience! I'm just a beginning composter and this video gave me confidence to get started without spending a lot of money;)
Thanks for the share. I had an old backyard Rubbermaid storage bin that has found new life as a large 55 gallon’ish compost bin. Drilled holes on all sides like you did. Dirt isn’t dirt cheap and looking forward to composing and recycling potting soil for next spring.
Great video! I live in DFW area, so it is hot here most of the year, and this is the best compost method for me. I might add that I use the manual tiller from Amazon to mix it. I also tried to compost in a 32 gallon trash can, but it was very inefficient, too deep. 40-50 gallon bins are the best for me.
This is really a great video, I too have watched multiple videos on this subject, but yours is by far the best as far as explaining to someone who doesnt know. Thank you so much!!!
I have been wanting to compost for years. I've watched videos and read books. I stumbled upon this video and I am SO grateful for it. I feel confident now!!!
This was a great video! I’m starting a compose tote soon. This was so helpful!! So I add a layer of soil. Then scraps, scraps, scraps. Then layer of greens and layer of browns. Then scraps, then again browns and greens then to off will soil. Right? I know this old video not sure if you will comment lol but I’m asking anyhow 😊
PRO TIP: Put a few small rocks at the front of the bin so there's a gap about a mm so worms that travel on the top of the earth, will find cover and then start working their way up for you. Reason I say this is, we all know what happens to planter bottoms when you lift them up or move them... This hide out spot where they will gravitate to, will make it easier for them to find the holes in your planter! -cheers
Thank you! We have a lot of these totes from moving and I am planning my garden. This is great because I can keep the critters out of it. I like to do in garden compost bins that are 5 gallon buckets burred in my beds with holes in them so worms can come and go and aerate my soil and help had nutrients.
Wow! This video has helped me so incredibly much! Not overwhelming, so clear and concise and so easy. Thank you, sir! God bless you for sharing this information! 😊🙏
Good luck with your garden this year, and your new raised beds.....Hopefully you'll put in a high quality lawnscape fabric on the bottom before you fill them with soil...to keep out the weeds...I learned the hard way , giving you a tip for the weedless way...
Thank you for this video! Out of all the videos I've watched, you were the only one i could find that was to the point and still detailed with the most useful info and tips! 😁👍
Thank you so much Sir! Very helpful & easy to understand info. I’m a new wannabe composter & gardener….it can be a little overwhelming to get started; so much of the composting gear advertised other places seems overly expensive for what should be a simple process. I’m going to get my HDX boxes & get started today. You’ve got a new subscriber…thanks again! 😊
Very practical. I used 50 gallon trash cans on Wheels to move where I need. I like to bungee cord the lid on and Roll It on its side for aeration. I will try this as well I think it'll be easier to stir with my pitchfork.
I have been watching diy composting videos for weeks. Yours is the best so far. I am excited about composting again and will get this started today...Many Thanks!! Liked and subscribed
What i like about plastic pins is storage convenience plus you don't have to poke holes in it you can just put a lid on it and forget about it for months or years and eventually it will decompose down
This is a good method. If you put holes, say 1/4" to 3/8", in the bottom you might attract worms to the bin to help with the composting. They would want a damp environment though.
I was thinking of building a compost pile with pvc and chicken wire or buying some more 30 gallon trash cans so that I can turn my compost pile. These storage totes are more ideal I think so I’m giving them a try. I can stack them when one bin fills up and empty them as I produce compost. When I saw your thumb nail with the totes it was my eureka moment. TFS
Great explanation of composting. I’ve been watching loads of videos mind blowing. I used a large dust bin to do mine & I can’t turn it as it’s to deep can’t get to the bottom stuff. Your way I recon I could handle turning that better. Thank you for the awesome tips 😊 going to look for some new containers 👍🏻
I have a ton of totes in my garage from a dusty old storage unit. Was just dumping behind garage but we got a rodent problem so I'm gonna start using the bins
Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely going to do a composting system. I'm new so starting out smaller but looks like the composting will save me money on soils. I currently buy cow doo and organic raised bed mix.
Probably a silly question, but do you need to water your compost? Im in the high desert and it sure is dry here, dont know if the compost should be kept moist? Also, should your compost bins be in partial shade, or is it ok to leave them out in the full sun?

Great system!
One tip from another gardener is to use a soldering iron to make holes in plastic totes, bins and buckets!
What about insects fruit flies getting in the holes
@@joanneortiz6715 then you’re doing it right! The compost needs critters like that
You can also heat up a skewer on the stove to melt through, this is what I do any time I need to make holes in plastic. Works great with no cracking.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I did not want to shell out $130 for a tumbler. This is easy for me to handle.
This isn't the lazy way, it's the smart economical way.
Ditto
