    I've been Gardening for 50 years and I'm a retired florist. I started a TH-cam channel in September.

    Great video! Thanks for putting it together so well and it was wonderful to see your whole family getting involved. :)
    I haven't seen the other comments or your blog, but I wanted to mention another wonderful green material to add to the bins: manures (chicken, goat, horse, cow, sheep, etc., (obviously not human, dog or cat). Their bedding like wood shavings, hay, straw, and also wood chips and mulch work well, too. Happy Composting!

      You have to know what the animals have been fed on before using manure in your compost. Some animals are fed with hay that has been treated with long term herbicides which would kill your garden.

    For eggshells I bake mine for 10 minutes @ 250 degrees then turn to powder in a coffee grinder. It helps avoid the rotten egg smell also eggs do have salmonella and that’s avoided by baking the shells.

    • @helenamcginty4920
      @helenamcginty4920 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ive always just chucked egg shells in with the veg and weeds etc. Ive never noticed a rotten egg smell either in my UK home or now in S Spain. Also in Europe chickens are vaccinated against salmonella and egg shells are not washed so maintain their natural protective coating. (We dont need to refrigerate them).
      During the hot dry Spanish summer though I stop adding fruit waste eg bits of over ripe fruit cut off before using the rest to reduce little black flies. I only have a small patio and compost in a corner. I never add coffee grounds as they attract sciarid flies which no gardener welcomes. And never potato peelings as they attract rats. (According to a rat catcher I once saw on TV).

    • @CabinGRL
      @CabinGRL ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@helenamcginty4920 great tips! 🌟 my compost is a closed system with no rat access but if I was using an open system I’d stop using the potato peels for sure. Great tip on coffee grounds and the flies.

    Thank you for a really good informative video & greetings from Australia.
    I have 2 large L shaped areas that I've been cultivating composts in over the last few years.
    I love them. Really easy.
    Fill one or one side of one L shape with lots of veggie scraps, prunings & cheap straw bought from a local fodder store. Alternate layers. When full, leave to rest. Start another area. When that's full the first is usually ready to use. If not, start another side of the 2nd L shape. I water when it's hot in summer or hasn't rained for over a week. Makes beautiful black rich compost & plants love it.

    To give it a good jumpstart, you can also add a little of ready-compost in the middle of the layers as doing them. Already has life in it and will immediately start working on the fresh mix and can shave off a week or 2 from the composting process.

    Awesome video. So straight forward and well-paced. We have a compost tumbler and I always struggle to get the right balance of browns and greens. It's way easier to toss in our green scraps from the kitchen than rummage up torn up cardboard or leaves to add in. We always have tons of flies around the tumbler too because the tumbler tumbles the browns and doesn't keep the browns on top.

    Great video Angela. I had the same experience where all we got was a lot of bugs. We moved and I wanted to try again. I got my bins from the city of Chandler for free. We got 4 of them. I am glad I watched your video today because I didn't realize to not always rewet it down. I was doing that 1-2x a week! YIKES. I like just letting it be and seeing if it needs anything as it progresses. I may have too much green also. I did about 50/50. I'm thinking I need to add some shredded paper or some of my wood chips that are extra. I will say that after the first day, I thought it already smelled good. I was hesitate to put any food scraps in. I recently tried it on one bin and buried the food under the compost. It is a learning curve for sure. Thanks for the tips!
