    That looks like a hopper that will work better than any other pattern I have tried here for Colorado freestone streams. As always Mr. McPhail, your fly tying is brilliantly done, not just with ease, but quality as well. Thank you for explaining the materials like you do, and how you tie the flies as well. Simply wonderful, thank you.

    Great video I learned alot but can you do a tips and tricks video on how to make smaller sized flies I'm fairly new to fly tying and find it difficult to work with small flies if you could make a video on this it would be very helpful

    First class instruction on detached body , the foam you used looks great on this fly must get some, the only loco foam I have is yellow with gold on one side got it years ago and I have never used it I can't think what to tye with it ,perhaps you could video a fly that incorporates it , well if you have some that is ! Thanks again davie.

      Hi George B,
      Yellow would be a great colour tied in much the same way but just leave out the red tag though as it may still work, there's many good patterns that have a yellow body so I could see it working just as well..I have also coloured the foam with marker pens which works really well..I hope this is of some help to you...Thanks again for kind words..
      All the very best Davie

      Davie McPhail just tried various colours of marker pens on the yellow and gold got some great results, especially on the gold side it still looks metallic with a little gold fleck shining through whatever colour you use looks great ,it was Metz loco foam and I used Sharpie pens .. Thanks again davie all the best

      It was a small piece of Veniards Prepared fly Tyers wax which I use when needed, I have attached a link to a video in which I show how I use it for you to see..th-cam.com/video/IN4N92G14Xg/w-d-xo.html

    Davie, My tube flies tend to be less durable than flies tied on hooks. I use plenty of cement, but the toothy critters really shred my tube flies. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill from Minnesota, USA.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill,
      I'm not sure what is going wrong with your tube flies though if you are getting the takes then you are tying good flies.. Some tubing can be a bit soft for me as I do tye really tight and when I remove the tube from the vise it bends with the pressure of the thread turns...What type of tube flies are you tying?
      All the very best Davie...

    • @billsutherland2128
      @billsutherland2128 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Davie,
      I've discovered that flaring both ends of the tube slightly with a warm (not hot) tapered bolt before placing the tube on my vice helps both my tying techniques and the endurance of the fly.
      I tie a lot of clouser minnows, royal coachmans, adams, experiment with many other interesting flies, and my favourite is the muddler minnow. Often I'll tie a fly just because it looks difficult or requires a new technique or material that is new to my knowledge.
      My claim to fame is a 22 inch brown trout, and a 17 pound Musky, both caught on flies I tied. The worst fish was caught while night fishing for catfish on the Rubidaeu river in the state of Missouri. This fish looked like a huge catfish, but when it hit the bank it had four legs and started to hiss, snap, and chase my buddy and I down the bank. Later, at a local restaurant called The waffle House at around 3:oo am, we told our story to some of the gentlemen eating breakfast, and they howled with laughter. Apparently, we had caught a "mud dog" who has a reputation of having a bigger bark than its bite.
      My focus is on freshwater fishing, and get a kick out of catching pike, walleye, bass, or panfish on flies and lures designed for trout or ocean fish. I've even started to fish for carp of all things. Hey, if it has fins I'll chase it!
      My first choice to fish with are top water flies, poppers, and lures because I usually fish from a boat and enjoy the explosion of a surface hit. My legs no longer support me well enough to fish a stream or river, although I have been considering purchasing a drift boat specifically designed for shallow river fishing.
      It's winter here in Minnesota, and the lakes are frozen. The technique of trolling is kind of difficult right now as you might imagine, unless a person should cut a long trench or a large circle in the ice. Never witnessed this level of stupidity, but we're waiting!
      I started tying jigs at eight years old with my Dad (50 years ago), and progressed to more sophisticated flies, and will tie until I die.
      You seem like a very experienced tier and fisherman yourself. Do you have some memorable fish you've caught? What's it like to be an internationally known fly tying celebrity? How did you come to the obsession of fly tying, or did it choose you?
      Thanks for responding to my short message,
      Bill Sutherland in Minnesota, USA.

    Also deadly for stocked rainbows in Missouri :) I tied some of these up before I went there. My question is where do you get the different colored triangle slit foam? All I can ever seem to get a hold of is the standard grey in triangle slit. Thanks, Davie. I absolutely love this channel and basically refer to it as the holy grail when people ask me where I purchases / learned to tie some of the flies they see me with. Take Care!

      Hi Damon Drake,
      I have attached a link to Wapsi Loco Foam which is the same as the foam I used in the video...I'm glad you enjoy the videos and the flies I tye and for all the kind words which mean a lot to me...I hope this is of some help to you and you find the foam..

      Davie,
      I already own that loco foam in all colors they sell. Great foam. What I was talking about was the foam in the fly box you you were showing the other colors and patterns in around 0:21 in the video. That is the green foam I was asking about. Sorry, for the confusion.
      Thank a ton.. Damon

      Sorry Damon,
      It's a silicone fly box so the green in the silicone which you saw in the video, I have attached a link to the box for you to see...www.fullingmill.co.uk/Products-UK/FM-Flyboxes-UK/Clear-Silicone-Fulling-Mill-Box-Large-UK

      Not a problem. Just saying foam in fly tying is like saying your ball is over there by a tree in golf. Which tree!? Lol. Sweet! Thank you. I really like the look of that fly box.
      Take care!

    And as follow-on to James' question, have you noticed any difference in buoyancy with split foam?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael,
      It just made the fly look a little bit better if I have to be honest as it still caught fish for the friends I tied them for so they asked for more..I like this style more when I am using a thread colour different from the foam as it does help it a lot, Thank you for asking...
      All the very best Davie...

  • @jamesvatter5729
    @jamesvatter5729 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does splitting the foam in this manner affect the fly's durability?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James,
      I would say no, it just helps to hide the thread turns a bit better but as I said in the video the fish will not know the difference...
      All the very best Davie..

    Really nice fly Davie. May I ask what deer hair you buy and where to get it from? It looks very good quality. Also I am hoping to take a trip to some hill lochs and was wondering if there are any must have patterns?

      Hi Owen,
      I have attached a link to the skin I would buy for these flies which will give you enough to tye many flies.. Sedge/Hedge Hogs patterns are great but I wouldn't go far without a Zulu, Mallard & Claret, Soldier Palmer, Butcher, Dunkled and some Daddies and Hoppers..There's many other but these are some of my favourites.. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that you liked the fly..
      All the very best Davie..
