Just learning to to tie flies and its a great privilege to learn from pros like yourself that make this look so easy and fast!!!! maybe one day ill be that quick haha
Hi Bob, Thanks for the kind words. Have you fished the Manatawny Creek. I live down there a while, that was one of my favorites. It has a great white mayfly hatch in September & October. Jim
The foam is soft closed cell sheet foam (1/8"), you can get it from fly shops. You can also use the harder closed cell sheet foam that you can get at any craft store or hobby store. All you do is trim it about 3/8" heat it up and roll it in your fingers it will round out nicely. With a little practice this can be a real money saver over buying pre shaped foam bodies. If you use the harder foam a heavier thread would be required. If you need more info let me know. Good Luck! Jim
Hey Jim, I mistakingly bought raffia ribbon and it turned out to be a God send. I unrolled the white shiny and it is clear and looks just like medallion sheeting. I have used it for wings, and I can make great wings, and on the stream if there are spinners the wings can be pulled right down into spinner position, and back up! super strong stuff and dusky transparent. Softens up slightly if you wet them, and goes right back to normal when dried. I would love to send you some need address. Sean
Thanks Jim - been looking for a good grasshopper to use here in Maine and that's it!! Is there a trick to knotting the pheasant fibers? I can do it but the knots are never in the same place - weird looking legs.
Thanks for the info re the legs - one more? What is the foam that you're using? The stuff I got at the fly shop was a lot more solid and didn't make that nice round shape.

What a great tie. Thanks Jim. How do you tie the legs? I have a heck of a time trying to tie a know in the pheasant tail.
Paitence or Hook and latch tool (more paitence) .
Nice Jim I make one sorta like that but I think i will like this one alot better !! watch out smallmouth LOL
@HONEYHOLEDIPPER ; Thanks for your comments, I'm from Pennsylvania.

Hi Bob,
I use a Latch Hook to tie the legs. But if you are trimming the legs after you tie them on it won't matter if they are even when you start.
Thanks for the info re the legs - one more? What is the foam that you're using? The stuff I got at the fly shop was a lot more solid and didn't make that nice round shape.
The foam is just Craft store sticky back foam. You can get it just about anywhere.
Great fly but what material is Swiss draw ?
It is Raffia, you can go to Party City and buy a costume Hula skirt and have enough for 2 lifetimes.
Me too Jim , what area ? I live in Philly, I shared your Video link on face book and caption read ( Think Summer Already )
hey Jim, nicely dressed Hopper pattern, thanks for shooting email, where are you from?
Wow that looks really difficult. Nice video though.
Jim, what is material your using for wings? Mike
It is actually a child"s grass skirt. But it is Swiss Straw. I found the grass skirt at a fabric center - craft store.
@HONEYHOLEDIPPER : I'm up in the Northeast, Carbondale.
Что это??
Thanks
