honestly though it could've been worked upon like in the game you the player are clearly pretty large, similar to the titan, so someone might've been able to build upon this by making a mini story where you the player are a friendly giant that has decided to help people by helping with the construction of the town, however then the this much more sadistic giant calling himself titan came along and wants to kill the villagers and you the player are trying to stop him, HOWEVER TARODEV REMOVED THE HOUSES FROM THE GAME so none of the future devs had any idea of what was built before tarodev because it was removed instead of being left in to, hopefully, inspire someone else to build upon it

This is the only comment with constructive criticism that’s crazy it’s not just saying “taro bad! he did bad!” It’s actually giving advice to him instead of just saying he did something wrong I thank you good sir
I think the "Yes, and" element should be integral to this series. With too much freedom, a bad apple can just hop in, mess everything up, and pass it along. But if you can only add new things, replace things that really need it (like a placeholder asset), or fix bugs in the codes, it would make everyone think a little harder about what it is that they want to add if they cannot directly remove things. Maybe it's a bit too restrictive, but I just came up with this in two minutes so take it with a grain of salt
I love this Video concept. I think it would be cool if you lenghten this process and give every dev 2 times the Chance to polish like : first dev - 2 - 3 -4 - 5 -6 - first again - 2 - 3 -4 - 5 -6.
It was kind of a bummer when the game was going in one direction, but that one guy entirely changed all of the goals and the point of the game. What happened to researching and protecting your base? If I had been one of the people who worked on the game before he got to it, I would've been pretty disappointed to have my stuff overrided like that It was a really cool game in the end though.
The problem with no communication is that you have an idea, but when the 5th dev came in, he changed the game to be more about grinding blood and defeating titans. The original game was more about tower defense and protecting a village. There was no balance, and so much was scraped. Still amazing at the end. However, it would be better if it kept more aspects of the tower defense.
Simpler the idea easier to make it is. Idea too complicated without a clear vision is trash in making. Look up people who give their starting as game dev bios , almost everyone of them tells this "Take simple easy to make stuff then build upon the foundation you have done if it has become too unfun then change it up. Portal is about portals. Half life is about fps , momentum, puzzle solving. Sonic is about speed, exploration, momentum, platforming. Tower defence genre is protecting something from waves of enemies. Rarely does a complicated game ever rise to be a good game. So as everyone has said at some point "keep it simple, don't overcopmlicate it"
@@temkin9298 To be fair it wasn't particularly complicated before his modifications. The only thing he did was modify the goal from filling up a bar to reducing a bar. I definitely think for the amount of time they had though he took the better direction. It's way easier to grasp killing the big boss than it is to research a solution to monsters. It's almost like humans evolved in a world where stabbing the giant thing causing you problems is the more natural solution.
Kinda sucks that Tarodev just got rid of everyone else's work and made his own thing. He pretty much reset the entire thing and it turned from 6 devs making a game, into 1 dev making a game, and 1 polishing it. This made the video somewhat pointless as it pretty much destroyed the idea of seeing the game evolve.
I know it would need a lot of people, but it would be fun to see this project become like a tree, where after each dev finishes two different devs continue, and then we can see how different each branch became
@@gserendipity sure no official rules were broken, as there were none. He was being a dick by ignoring the game concept and basically just did what he felt like. @@gserendipity lol, no. But I came here to watch how people creatively build on each other’s work, instead of you know, what Tarodev did. Also, what is “fun” is subjective, and unlike you, I understand that. What tarodev did was missing the point of the challenge (part of the challenge is cooperation without communication).
For Christmas you should do a white elephant kind of thing where each dev makes a demo for a game. Then everyone gives a short description of their demo, then you choose which game you want to code on. And at the end everyone gives their game to someone else to keep.
It's a shame the research was scrapped. What would have been cool is if the research bar wasn't to win the game but to unlock the Grinder and Blood Tower. So you had to build a small village to get the research done quickly. Defend it. Have it large enough to research before the boss spawns. If the boss spawns 1st, it will likely wreck your town preventing you from winning. However if your research is done you can defeat them in the way added. It's a shame that a whole bunch of objects and concepts were removed in a challenge about adding things and building upon other peoples work. Did 6 developers really make the game if a lot of what they spent time on was completely axed by another developer? I mean they definitely worked on it and made improvements but the impact they had in game was removed.
love how tarodev legit went in there said "hey this is cool, Lets just add some blood, defeat the whole perpous of the game and put almost all of everybody elses work in the garbage!".
@benzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs Well, some of the developers playtest to see what direction the game is going in and then build on that. They also try to keep the art style consistent Others just ignore the work of the other devs, make their own thing often completely changing what the game is about. Some of them also just add use their own art style everywhere even if it doesn't fit with the game Like with the horror game all the devs built on each others work and the game had a clearly defined distinct art style. Then the last dev added a big boss, removed most of the gameplay the other devs had made and made it a basic shooter. He also threw out all of the written story then slapped the blackthornprod art style on everything It was such a 180° they had to put fake early version of the boss (that never existed before the last dev) to make it seem like it fit

A little sad that some are unable to add to the idea without changing it completely. Taro basically erased all the work of previous two devs. Very uncool.
@@kokujins6931There already was purpose. You were supposed to build research stations and defend them from pillagers until your research maxed out. Taro completely threw all of that out the window. The final product ended up being not even close to the intention of the other devs
Speedrun Guide: 1. Go mine materials for your first building which is must be Grinder. You want the grinder first cuz there is some trick: Because trigger collider was extended you can place grinder slightly below in front of enemy spawn point. That allows you forget about shooting enemies, cuz they gotta be spawning nearby the grinder and instantly get into it. 2. Now when you don't need to worry about Blood farming go obtain another materials and place 3 shooting towers in a triangle setup and fill all 3 with blood (you'll manage to do this even before the boss will arrive) 3. Move around the boss and fill towers with your free blood that you got from abusing the big trigger collider bug described above.
All the devs really improved on and tweaked previous devs’ contributions, while adding a little of their own. They kept each others ideas and created a product that was the culmination of all of them. Except Tarodev. He was like “nah let’s change everything these people have already done and rework the entire premise of the game (removing houses and research, making walls useless) cause we need BLOOD”
Too little change if you see what they did as improving slightly Taro at least changed the game and built enough that it can be considered a game. If the ones before built enough I would say yes Taro f-bombed the premise. One dev only changed ui in 4 hrs! I would've wanted them to focus on workable improvements. Houses could help teching up to unlock necessary things. Trees perhaps would slow the enemies down but given that game looks fps tower defence with no action it is hardly workable. It is hard making games and usually games start with many ideas clashing and what is considered best ones gets selected for improvement and implementation. With not much time left with no tangible premise Taro at least down greaded the premise to serve something in the end. Bad games cling to much to unachievable or too unfun ideas and achive less than half, best games refine and redefine themselves through planing and experimenting, hlf2 leak is unrecognizable to released one. If you want a quick well implemented game you have a basic premise, 70%(no research) of all games are war or fight games because it is the most simplest conflict there is. Resource management &tower defence game with the end condition of research needs too much dev timea and coordination. 24 hrs game jams are usually with a clean vision and understanding without code reading taking too much time. That's why Tero gets praised.

Imo fairly disresepctful to the previous devs and not at all what this challenge is supposed to be about.

this video was so fun to watch, seeing how each person would add something to make this tower defense game more fun! *tarodev* R.I.P. tower defense game. i loved you, but now we must move on to fast paced boss killer
Moral of the story: if you ever start a game dev company, this game of "developer telephone" is perfect for weeding out who will change the game in their own selfish way. As a company manager, you'd want to make sure you get rid of Tarodev first.
this is a good example of constructive criticism! Nobody can say he's a bad game developer, just not the right developer for the job. He literally came in and said "I don't like this, in the trash it goes". Tarodev is almost like a newly hired triple A game exec that on his first day barges in the game dev meeting, look at the next FPS development 1 week away from launch and says "scrap that, keep the guns, rewrite the story, we're making a RGP fanfic furry dating simulator now"
I'm not defending him, but ironically, he restored the original vision of the blood diamonds. After all (3:12), they were poorly rendered blood splatters at first 😂
Honestly tarodev does an amazing job when he’s the last one, go watch the latest video. And NOA CANNOT BE AT THE END, he COMPLETELY changed the second to last game they made
pretty great video! pretty cool to see Tarodev's take on everything and to see the progression of the game, I found that the "tower shooting while placing" bug wasn't corrected, as building a grinder allows you to gather blood without placing it.
Tarodev: man this is so cool, these guys clearly had a vision of what they wanted thi.s game to be. I'm going to trivialize all the enemies and make the previous building aspect nearly irrelevant
I don't get it why you mad at him tbh. Liam is literally the one who made so the player can attack, completly erasing the purpose of a tower defend game. Because why bother defend the tower if you can just attack the enemy without cost. Taro saw that, and probably misunderstood the game and thinking it just a game where you need to kill the enemy, so he gave the game objective, by adding a boss. In my opinion Liam is the one to blame.
Any plans on looping the challenge? It would be cool for the first developer to continue working on the game after it has been changed so much. This way we also get a chance to see other developers reacting to the change. Love your videos
While Taro is a good developer I do not like what he did. The whole point of this challenge is to take what's given to you and find a way to expand on it and make it work, making a completely new game goes against the spirit of that.
i wish they kept the research thing as like you couldnt attack the titan until the research was complete and then you could build the towers, but you still had to defend yourself from the titan while the research was going. (i dont know how well this would work with the same boss enemy, would probably have had to change him)
I wonder if building more houses would only then allow you to access the blood grinder, cuz at the end the houses weren't really part of the game. Still amazed at how quickly they made this project tho
i think the video need to have a meet up gathering talk at the end of the video. It would be very entertaining to see how devs talk to one another on the game they co-op-ly created.
Just to post a different take on this, I personally felt that Tarodev changed the gameplay loop too much. If by accident it's one thing, like in previous videos some people didn't understand the concept and thus added features that change it dramatically. But in this case Tarodev knew and understood the core loop, and decided to effectively invalidate most of the game to that point. The village houses and walls became effectively useless yet they stayed in the UI. The game was changed from survival city builder tower defense to action shooter, with basically no overlap. While it's impressive he was able to make so many changes so quickly, I feel it is basically a slap to the developers before him who had basically their entire game concept put in the trash. To me these types of videos are more interesting when people add onto the previous work, not just discard it. Keeping disparate ideas and adding your own results in games that are wholly unique. If at any point you then have a person strip out most of that identity and only keep in what aligns with a more particular focused vision you get something that just feels more generic, the appeal of this kind of experiment is lost. It may seem I'm being really critical of Tarodev here, and I was to emphasize that I think he's an amazing developer, and what he ended up with after his turn did look fun and more polished, I just don't think that polish over interesting ideas is good in this formula, there are plenty of other development video formulas that do this already, this formula lends itself well to crazy, wacky, absurd concept combinations. I would have rather seen Tarodev try to find a way to make the current game more fun while preserving it's identity, rather than taking things out that didn't work for him. I'm intentionally trying to be a bit harsh, just because I don't see many people in the comments discussing this side of perspective here. I want to repeat I have a lot of respect for Tarodev, I just lost most interest in this video after his changes.
Also it'd be interesting to see what this formula would do if you gave developers 6 or even 8 hours instead of 4. How much more polished would the result become. How much larger in scope do the developers go. How much more work or focus would be placed on clearly explaining the mechanics, and would such additional time to work on such clarity reduce confusion between the exchanges between the developers. Would the games become more crazy, or would more time to fully develop concepts lead to development of a more focused and detailed fewer systems/mechanics game. A similar set of questions could be asked about what happens with more developers, instead of 6 what would hap[pen if there were 8, or 10. The idea being to introduce a slight change to the formula for every episode and see if any data pops out of doing so regarding how certain aspects of the formula affect peoples mindsets and output.
Liam is wholly overlooked. Improved and fixed the game mechanics that already existed. All those changes almost entirely undone because Tarodev had an idea for a completely different game. Really disappointing to see how much one dev can just ruin the entire direction a game is taking. If Taro returns I hope he's less destructive with other people's work in this collaborative project. Would also prefer him to be less dissmissive of the game as it stood when he got it.

@@temkin9298 think that problem is solved by giving people more time to work on the game and instead of one session it loops through each dev twice
Maybe it's a bit too restrictive, but I just came up with this in two minutes so take it with a grain of salt
wouldve been cool if you guys had the boss spawn after the research is over
Great job all! Flippin Vampire Tarodev extracting blood lol. Fun video to watch keep these coming!

would be nice to see dev reactions what they've got in the end
It was kind of a bummer when the game was going in one direction, but that one guy entirely changed all of the goals and the point of the game. What happened to researching and protecting your base? If I had been one of the people who worked on the game before he got to it, I would've been pretty disappointed to have my stuff overrided like that
It was a really cool game in the end though.
It would be really cool to have 10 or even 20 developers working on a game.
In order for tarodev to receive redemption he needed to implement a unicorn. I’m disappointed.
No joke, I had it in the back of my mind. I almost put it in my video as a cameo 🤣
The tarodev guy said F you to the previous devs and changed everything
It's fascinating to see everyone's approaches. Thanks for orchestrating this!
I really wished Tarodev did not change the original point of the game. I really liked how it was before he changed everything.
I 100% agree.
This came out REALLY good
Kinda sucks that Tarodev just got rid of everyone else's work and made his own thing. He pretty much reset the entire thing and it turned from 6 devs making a game, into 1 dev making a game, and 1 polishing it. This made the video somewhat pointless as it pretty much destroyed the idea of seeing the game evolve.
100%
I loved the research version more. Maybe they can make it another game mode in the game?
I know it would need a lot of people, but it would be fun to see this project become like a tree, where after each dev finishes two different devs continue, and then we can see how different each branch became
That would be so cool!
Tarodev just hoped in and started to just change the entire game
You spelled “ignoring the main part of the challenge” wrong.
@@realGBx64 as in? the challenge is to "Pass the game" and he did just that, you just hatin' for no reason
@@realGBx64 you can't accept that tarodev just made the game 10x more fun
@@gserendipity sure no official rules were broken, as there were none. He was being a dick by ignoring the game concept and basically just did what he felt like. If you want to make your own game that’s fine, but then don’t pretend to play this game of making a game *together*. I think that detracts from the video.
I mean they definitely worked on it and made improvements but the impact they had in game was removed.
love how tarodev legit went in there said "hey this is cool, Lets just add some blood, defeat the whole perpous of the game and put almost all of everybody elses work in the garbage!".
yeah people praise him for it but he stepped over everyone, took away too much, and was not a team player. dick move
@@sipofliquid the whole point of the video i s that you cannot communicate with your group so how can you be a team player
@benzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs Well, some of the developers playtest to see what direction the game is going in and then build on that. They also try to keep the art style consistent
Others just ignore the work of the other devs, make their own thing often completely changing what the game is about. Some of them also just add use their own art style everywhere even if it doesn't fit with the game
Like with the horror game all the devs built on each others work and the game had a clearly defined distinct art style. Then the last dev added a big boss, removed most of the gameplay the other devs had made and made it a basic shooter. He also threw out all of the written story then slapped the blackthornprod art style on everything
It was such a 180° they had to put fake early version of the boss (that never existed before the last dev) to make it seem like it fit

A little sad that some are unable to add to the idea without changing it completely. Taro basically erased all the work of previous two devs. Very uncool.
Agree
Not at all he gave purpose to the game
@@kokujins6931 there already was a propose to the game and it was go get 100% research
@@kokujins6931There already was purpose. You were supposed to build research stations and defend them from pillagers until your research maxed out. Taro completely threw all of that out the window. The final product ended up being not even close to the intention of the other devs
But it was more fun to play.
Speedrun Guide:
2. Now when you don't need to worry about Blood farming go obtain another materials and place 3 shooting towers in a triangle setup and fill all 3 with blood (you'll manage to do this even before the boss will arrive)

Tarodev is almost like a newly hired triple A game exec that on his first day barges in the game dev meeting, look at the next FPS development 1 week away from launch and says "scrap that, keep the guns, rewrite the story, we're making a RGP fanfic furry dating simulator now"
Don't forget to bit Liam too Anna previous video about making a horror game change the entire thing into a lame third-person shooter near the end

You should make it so everyone gets to work on the game twice
Tarodev for the win.
Suggestion add 30-60mins to the next devs allowing them to study the current game progress on top of their actual 4hours.
Maybe add 30 minutes of figuring out what’s going on so that the full 4 hrs are made up of making the game
@@saaskkehhuciha2949 Yeah I'd have to agree with Saaskkehh on that.
Awesome!! Very good job doing it!!
Any plans on looping the challenge? It would be cool for the first developer to continue working on the game after it has been changed so much. This way we also get a chance to see other developers reacting to the change.
Love your videos
Such a great video concept- really enjoyed it! Subscribed
Yeah like imagine you'd need 100% research for the blood grinder so at first you have to defend your houses for a while before you can fight back
i think the video need to have a meet up gathering talk at the end of the video.
I love this format The Most! Really cool! Thanks and Keep it up!:)
btw, 2m 21s, though I kept dying several times:D
I feel like the 4th dev messed up the vision of the game
He did that in the previous game too.
Please keep this series going!
Welp there goes the entire city system. What a shame.
Which dev made the movement the arrow keys? They should have their kneecaps removed via baseball bat.
