Steve Perry always made sure they never recorded anything that they couldn't duplicate live. No auto tune, no in-ears, just raw talent.
There was no auto tune back then - just pure talent. Journey wrote this song.
THE VOICE !!@ Steve Perry ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Steve Perry was a drummer so he tends to move with the beat. Please do more Steve Perrys is amazing!!
Yes, Steve would refer to the name of whatever city they were playing in to personalize the performance. The original song lyric is "born and raised in South Detroit".
Journey and Steve Perry are incredible live. More!
Steve Perry was called The Voice. I think you can see why! This was just pure raw talent. No auto tune. Love your reaction!
Steve "the voice" Perry is my favorite all time male vocalist check out Mother Father live in Houston and Wheel in the Sky live in Osaka the vocal acrobatics are incredible. My favorite of thiers however is Open Arms. Journey was one of the few bands that actually sounds better live than studio ❤❤❤ Steve Perry left the band in 1998 for me Journey is not Journey without him.
Steve Perry was the Lead Vocalist in that era, He is The Voice
Steve is like this in every performance. Puts much emotion and fun in every song whether he is live or in studio recording. He has such control of his breathing while singing. He moves his hands, arms the way he does to take in more in order to control his breathing during a song. "Don't Stop Believin'" was the song used on the very last episode of "The Soprano's" TV show & "Lights" is about the city by the bay San Francisco where Steve is from. I think he wrote this song with Neil Schon (lead guitar).
Steve Perry is one of those extremely rare singers who can sound even better live, because his voice and breath control is astounding. And yes; like many artists do during concerts, they "play to the current crowd" by using the name of the current city if a song has the name of a city in it.
I've watched this dozens of times -- NEVER gets old
You should pull up some older videos with Steve dancing and playing air guitar with his mike stand. That's just the way he is: totally amped on stage. In fact, the very last number of this concert (see the "Anyway You Like It" clip) which is the second encore, he's running around the stage like a maniac, like he's afraid he didn't give the audience everything he had.
The guitar riff at the beginning of this song is to represent the sound of the train. In an interview with Steve he talked about this guitar riff to give the sound of a train. It adds so much to this song.
Steve Perry is The Best!!! ❤❤❤
Between Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury (of Queen), we were gifted with two of the finest voices to ever grace a stage!
My first concert outside my state fair was Journey in 1983.. It was AMAZING. Steve Perry.. The Voice
The Voice aka Steve Perry. Love him! That smile voice and oh my gosh that HAIR!
It’s an anthem!! Simple timeless and epic!!
A reporter once asked Freddie Mercury of Queen, how does it feel to be the greatest singer ever. Freddie said don’t ask me, ask Steve Perry
TALENT! ❤
It is your loss that you don't know this band. One of the most successful in music history. Known worldwide.
Also, 2 auto tune experts decided to auto tune Steve Perry but it wouldn't work on his voice. He has perfect pitch and it came out 97% pure, there was nothing in his voice to correct.
In the 80's, Steve Perry was crowned "THE VOICE" for his unmatched singing ability! The 80's was filled with music that to this day is unmatched. Journey was without a doubt one of THE biggest and best bands of all times! One other band you need to check out is Boston and their song "More than a feeling". 80's music was pure raw talent. None of this auto-tune stuff they have these days! The one thing you can say about Steve Perry is that he poured his whole heart and soul into his performances and became one of the greatest singers of all time!
Do a Reaction to the rest of the Songs from there Escape Tour Live in Houston 1981 with Lead Singer " Steve Perry " Stone in Love " Girl Can't Help it " Open Arms " Who's Crying Now " Mother Father " Escape " Stay Awhile " Steve Perry is called ( The Voice ) he is one of the best if not the best Singer in Rock History.
ESPECIALLY Mother, Father
IMO Journey sounds better live....Epic
Journey wrote alot of these songs. Especially when Steve Perry (lead singer) joined the band. This is one band I wish I had seen in concert.
Steve, the voice, is the best, nobody sings like him and Journey without him is not the same.
Watch the "Raised on Radio" video "Girl can't help" "I'l be allright without you", with Randy Jackson on bass
Performed at The Summit in Houston TX, former home of the NBA team the Houston Rockets. It is a large church now.
"The singer"..... that my friend is the one and only Steve (The Voice) Perry

Steve Perry's musical influences were Elvis and Sam Cooke!
Elvis and Steve happen to be my favorite of all time!
-Colleen ♥️
💯 about Sam Cooke
It was the best concert tour ever. I'm so glad I was able to witness Steve's greatness in Seattle.
"Maybe my parents listened to it"
They did. 😁 If you think this was amazing live, check out their other stuff. It's all like this.
Because he’s Steve Perry the voice he is Perfect!
You can tell Steve Perry was heavily influenced by the Late Great Sam Cooke .
I imagine this is how Sam Cooke would sound if he sang Rock Music 😂
LIGHTS is a song written about San Francisco
Pure raw talent Journey and The Voice Steve Perry theres no one like them today ! Today its all fake . I just subscribed to your channel, best of luck. Original lyric says Detroit 🥰
Talent. You had to have it to make it back it then. No autotune or pitch correction! Journey was better live thon record. ❤
Unfortunately, this vid has been altered to include a bigger crowd noise than the concert DVD. Way overdone…It’s ridiculous .
I don’t know why someone would do that, but here it is.
If you check out another live Journey from this concert - which has many great performances - please choose another content creator!
I totally agree with you. I have the dvd of this concert at home and have watched it countless times. The crowd noise is normal. The crowd noise in this video was so loud, it was extremely annoying and I had a hard time concentrating on what the guy was saying. I was watching for this guys reaction, but it was just too much. If he does this every video I won't be back.
And that's why we older people just can't get into today's music. This is what we thought music was.
Steve Perry is THE VOICE not The singer!!
Steve Perry is from Houston
No, he's from San Francisco! I'm pretty sure. 😊
@@tonidarcy5515 He's from Hanford, California.
Born in Hanford California
Steve Perry was born in a small agricultural town in California, son of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands. He credits his ability to extend vowels from being raised bilingual in English and Portuguese. He is fluent and has a few unpublished songs in Portuguese.
He would "play to the city" they were in during a concert. This video was recorded during the Houston leg of the tour, hence "....born right here in Houston".
If you don't know the music from the 80's down. Totally disregard Rap, Hip Hop. Haven't listen to radio from 2024 to the 90's.
There are much better vids of them doing Lights live. Whoever made this one superimposed excessive crowd noise over it! Horrible!
