It was absolutely crushing when Neil Peart passed Rush was one of the best ever and as much as I would love to see a return, no matter how good a new drummer would be, it just wouldn't be Rush without Neil
Before my 75th birthday in 2020, my wife surprised me by getting tickets to see Journey in Jacksonville, 142 miles east of our hometown of Monticello, FL. The tickets were $250 each. Arnel Pineda was lead singer then and we enjoyed them as much as the other 2 times we had seen them in concert. I had previously purchased the Blu-ray disc of the movie entitled "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" (labeled on the front cover as "THE INCREDIBLE RAGS TO ROCK STAR STORY OF A MAN DESTINED FOR FAME"). On the back of the cover, it states: " A HEARTFELT ENTERTAINING STORY THAT WILL LEAVE YOU SMILING". The movie lives up to that description. We met in Tallahassee in 1974 and married in 1981. We attended several concerts through the years and first saw Journey on Apr 20, 1978, at Ruby Diamond Auditorium (FSU) in Tallahassee, FL with Montrose. The tickets back then were under $10. I still have some old ticket stubs from several past concerts we attended through the years, including Pink Floyd on 6/7/1975 at Atlanta Fulton Co. Stadium (tickets were $8.00 ea.), and Jimmy Buffett on Feb. 17, 1981, @ Tallahassee, FL ($7.50 each) and a few others. Just shows how much our buying power has changed. In 1955, gas was $0.29/gallon. When I was 10, my dad bought a power mower with a one-gallon gas tank. Most yards in our neighborhood were 75'x 150' and if memory serves me correctly, I could mow 5 lawns @ $0.25 each and make $1.00. Cokes were 5¢ each and the Saturday matinees were 10¢ each for kids. Drive-ins were about $2-3 per car or $1.50/adult and 25¢/kid. In Feb. 1968, I bought a new 1968 Pontiac GTO for $3500 in Jacksonville. In the Navy as an E-5 with over 2 years of service, I made $278.70/month and shared an apt. for $75/ mo., my car + insurance was $150/mo. so I had about $50/mo. for spending money (usually beer money). Just a bit of nostalgia to share with the kids. "Life's been good to me so far!"
It's funny the last lyric mention, I had that song stuck in my head for a week but had only heard it on the radio with no name for the last 20 years and it just got recommended to me a couple days ago after I hummed it for a week! I could only remember the lines "my Maserati goes 185, I lost my license now I don't drive" 😂 sorry just had to share that haha
@@mournblade1066 I didn’t think that he was the only one. Hey Gregg, I live in Austin, too! (The actual Austin, not Dripping Springs.) Can I see the trophy? lol
I agree but the fact is he can’t hit those notes anymore. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. It happened to my brother in law and he had a 4 octave range too and could sing the phone book which man does that statement age me!
As a guitar player and vocalist who toured for over two decades, i got burned out myself on music. I love music, but the business, the grind, the politics etc. Id had it. I actually stopped listening to music and i didnt pickup my guitar for a few years. I finally was persuaded to do some shows a few years back and within one show, those same feelings came back. Everything i disliked about performing was back within the 1st set of the show. The madness behind the scenes and back stabbing and drama...It doesnt matter how much you love something or someone, you can lose your love for it. So i stopped. I got so burned out from it all that i just cant even look at my guitars and i have trouble listening to music i once loved, as it brought back memories and not good ones. The only thing that got me thru the shows towards the end was the crowd interaction with the music. But that only lasts for those few hours your onstage. The rest of the time i was miserable and you end up picking up bad habits to deal with whats going on. It was a dream of mine to do this and then my dream became a nightmare. Im not sure if i will ever pickup a guitar or perform live again. I give mad props to bands that are able to get thru all the BS and continue. But i understand how Steve felt when he wanted to quit Journey. Youd think the music and crowd connection would be enough... but as i said, that only lasts a few hours and then reality comes crashing down. If you like what you do, do your best to not burn yourself out on it and begin to not even like what you do. This can happen with anything that you take on. Sports, Music etc. Doesnt matter. Always take the time you need to recharge so you will continue to enjoy what you do. Also be careful who you trust, if by the end of your life you can count your true friends on one hand, your doing something right. Communication is key and patience. But forcing yourself to continue to do something when your not enjoying it, that will only take you away from that love that brought you there in the first place. Theres a right and wrong way of going about life.
Lesson from an old guy who's seen it all: go to their shows while they're young, upcoming winner-to-be. They don't have the same magic like The Who or The Rolling Stones who hobble along as seniors. Singers & musicians get burned out, money issues always enter the scenario, record company pressures, endless touring sucks. With all these moving parts & influences, it's no wonder bands become a bad relationship and someone gets divorced or a total breakup happens.
Stories like this illustrate how tricky it can be for a band to hang together. Success is no guarantee of harmony. Journey, Chicago, Styx, Van Halen, Foreigner, etc all have their stories of famous departures. Makes me appreciate Rush even more. Those three made it work for 40 years, and were always friends.
Your videos always show up in my feed, so I don't understand how your videos are being suppressed. You do a great job & I hope things resolve in your favor.
They burned bright together, but things that burn that bright tend to burn out. Those men gave us a gift, and we should just be thankful for being able to receive it.
I saw them in Nashville last weekend for a stadium show with Steve Miller & the headliner Def Leppard. They are a great live band. With all 3 acts, 5 hours of nothing but hits. To me, it’s always been Neal’s band to lead since he’s the only original left from the founding, though there’s no doubt that Steve Perry is the immaculate voice everyone identifies with. I am just happy that they still perform, they still deliver a great concert, and Neal still burns on lead guitar like the legend he is.
I was shattered too. I wore out my Journey albums. Sang all the songs along with Steve Perry. My parents had recently gotten divorced, so the music helped me so much. It really affected me when they broke up in 1987. I cried!
Thank you for this one, Professor! I'm in my senior years now but back in the '80s here in the Phils., our ad team was proud to have known this shy kid from a gutsy cover band from Olongapo City. We had been sponsoring a series of nationwide tours for a global brand with local talent all over the country. In years to come, we would tap him again and again for a flood of jingles. But even back then, we knew only he could match Steve Perry's incredible range. The years have seasoned his prowess for TH-cam but we always knew the world would catch up with Arnel one day. 😉
When a key band member leaves, a key ingredient is gone. If you bake something and replace butter with margarine, it might look the same, but there's no denying it's just ... off.
Thanks goodness there's margarine with which to replace butter with, I thought when I went vegan. Like some people like the post-Steve Perry Journey singers better then Steve Perry.
The band breakup that hurt me most was PANTERA. Journey was a close second. I blamed Schon for it, but it was probably all of them. Seeing what's going on now with Cain/Schon and girlfriend-I am back to blaming Schon for the breakup. Steve Perry is my favorite male vocalist-no disrespect to the others. Ann Wilson is right there with him. I still listen to Journey and Steve Perry's solo stuff almost daily. He can still sing after 25 years off! JJ -South Alabama
The Steve Perry era of journey was fantastic but today i wanna give a special mention to Gregg rolie he helped create the iconic journey sound us fans love and the wonderful vocal harmonies he shared with Steve Perry was timeless infinity, evolution and departure are worth another listen
I liked early Journey pre Perry the most. Perry is when they became a lot more commercialized. Post Perry ive had no interest in. Sorry. I saw them once post Perry and the sound guy must of been drunk, because the sound was awful and Neils guitar was too loud. Im a guitar player and for me to be saying the guitar was too loud.... then it DEF was too loud haha. Also the review the next AM in the paper said the same thing. So it wasnt just me. HAHA.
@@ctcards2636 that's a funny story yeah look into the future and next are fantastic albums and showed off how amazing musicians journey totally where yes the Steve Perry era was commercial and after raised on radio I totally lost interest
What’s actually amazing is that no one realizes that all singers that have joined Journey post Steve Perry (including Arnel) are emulating Steve Perry! Singing his songs with his voice. It will ALWAYS be about Steve Perry.
True but Journey is more then Steve Perry. I mean Neil, Greg Rolie, Jonathan Cain added to the group when he came in. I mean it’s not all about Perry, people just make it that way.
@@mrblurblur2003 That may be, but it doesn't change the fact that the band heard him, and had to have him. It's on them that they wanted a copy of Steve.
I was blessed to be able to see Journey with Steve Perry back in summer of early 80's. Me, now at 60yro, can't remember their opening band. It doesn't help that I threw away my concert ticket stubs a few years back. Got to see a lot of rock bands and greatly miss that part of my youth. I do remember being blown away by Journeys live performance. Back then, bands were so stellar in their live shows. They didn't need gimmicks & dance routines, etc. They were real singers who could carry a tune! No so today, most need the aid of machines & backup singers to get through the show. They can't hold a candle to our & previous generations of singers and real bands!
The Journey breakup was largely unknown at the time. It wasn’t ‘officially’ announced, or really even talked about. Most people were surprised (and found out about it) when they released their greatest hits a couple years later. I was blessed to see them with Steve in the 80s (and many times since!).
The whole album is fantastic…underrated and unappreciated. It’s not the Frontiers and Escape era Journey…it’s more mature. Not a single throw away on it.
Trial by Fire is one of my favorite Journey songs. For me, it’s a song of a person who is wrestling with the things of God. With all the success, money and fame, the things of this world may bring happiness, but they don’t bring true joy. “All my life I'm running From the love that's coming Saving grace please pull me through”. There is a Love that is coming back. I pray that all of them find the One that offers saving grace and mercy and ultimate peace and joy.
With the intensity of Steve Perry’s vocals for Journey, their tours should have been spaced out more to give him a chance to rest. They were over-booked for the money, for certain. I’ve never been surprised that it took its toll.
@@fratberry it wasn’t Neil, initially. First it was their manager. I’m sorry, his name fails me right now. AFTER that Neil starting pushing Steve to see how high a chord he could go. Or how long he could hold a chord. I believe that it’s Steve himself who claims this in one of his interviews.
Between Steve Augeri and Arnel Pineda, they also had a brief stint with Jeff Scott Soto on lead vocals. I saw them in concert with him, and thought he did an awesome job too. When they fired him and hinted that a big announcement was coming, I thought that was going to be Steve Perry’s return, but it was Arnel instead. I think the Hall of Fame induction was the last best hope of seeing Perry perform with Journey one more time. When that didn’t happen I knew it was really over.
We surely grew up in the same era of music. I too was not happy when Perry left Journey. There was always hope, but time took its toll. The real shocker for me was how they found Pineda, with his incredible sound alike Steve Perry voice. I was in denial until I heard him live with Journey and realized it was true. As for time, it will heal all of our souls. Let's hold off talking about Hall and Oates for awhile...... This was a tough one Professor!
@@thomasmann2327 I didn't say anything about him being the original drummer. We're talking about the new singers in the band, therefore my mentioning how Deen has tackled the more "difficult" songs. And personal issues aside, he's an awesome singer.
Add Styx to the list of break ups. It is far worse than even Journey. Seems like Tommy Shaw absolutely hates Dennis DeYoung. DeYoung said he'd be up to rejoin Styx for a final tour which I'm sure would make a ton of money but Shaw didn't even consider it for a second.
There’s no substitute for Steve Perry, but Arnel is a decent lead singer for the band. I enjoyed the first album they did with him, and he did justice to the band’s Classics. That being said, I would love to see them reunite with Steve Perry, even if only temporarily.
One of my all-time favorite bands. I remember in my naive high school years when Street Talk came out I just thought it was an experiment with some awesome music and he'd be right back with the band. Raised on Radio seemed to prove this point. When Van Halen came back strong around that same time with Sammy Hagar it left me with a rose-colored view of the music world and the thought of Journey, to go with the obvious pun went their separate ways, it was a hard pill to swallow. Journey was my very first concert jersey. I didn't go to the concert but Columbia House had them for sale in the back of the monthly magazine.
My wife held off for a year with her hip... I was happy that she finally opted for the replacement... Huge improvement for her, and I'm sure it was for Perry when he did it
It's a miracle any band can bond together, create music and be lucky enough to get noticed for 1 song. It's inevitable for bands to dissolve. But the miracles gets more miraculous the more years and more great music they create and release. I don't dwell on why bands break up or yearn for them to get back together. I'm just thankful for all the great music that's been created and released.
I adore Raised on Radio prof! as a radio dj of this era of music, gotta love that cover of the towering signal towers signalling airwaves over the studio Steve perry, what a vocal powerhouse their second push out of steve sounds just like how dennis got pushed out of Styx in 1999 For a band to reunite, i would love presidents of the united states of america to come back again (their first album turns 30 next year), i'll have to network you through to their frontman, bassist chris ballew if you wish to cover this iconic trio of dorks of US based alternative 90s music
Adam, I've been enjoying your content for a couple of years! In my opinion, I don't think your channel is in any need of clickbait titles like "Every Video I Put Out is BEING SUPPRESSED, including This ONE!". I hope that's acceptable to suggest! 🙂
There's no reason TH-cam would suppress your videos. And I agree, the click bait titles are beneath you. Something may have changed in the algorithm, but it wouldn't be intentionally directed at you, stuff just happens when dealing with algorithms.
Why would you automatically accuse him of clickbait? Maybe he's telling the truth. Look at how much information is being suppressed and manipulated in today's society.
I'm sorry to hear that professor. I still get every new one in my feed every day but I noticed a while ago that the views were dropping off a lot. Love what you do and hope you can keep it up and get it back on track.
Once again Professor thank you, thank you, thank you for this incredible lesson. I was a few minutes late to class because I was discussing your class to a new student I just signed up to your website.. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, You Rock 💗🎶😎
@@mmustangg2 what could they be upset about. His show is clean, no hate. Just good entertainment. Some people just can’t stand to see others reach their dreams.smh.
I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who struggled to accept that Steve Perry was gone from the band for good. I remember seeing Journey on TV at a live concert and being astounded that he sounded as good live as he did on the albums. I was reluctant to accept Arnel Pineda was the new lead, but I have since grown up, and I'm impressed that he has stuck with the band so long and that they're thriving ❤️
Journey had several albums before Steve Perry joined the band. Journey was originally formed as an off-shoot of Santana, and a couple members of Journey were previously in Santana. Steve was a Johnny-Come-Lately into The Established Band Journey.
As always I love your content!. I look at the breakup of Journey and Styx and see some similarities the band trying to override the medical decisions of Steve Perry and Dennis DeYoung. With that said the bottom line in my mind the bands could have come to a better soluition and Steve and Dennis could have come to an agreement they all could live with. That is the problem with both sides draw a line in the sand. Never dictate a course of treatement or refuse to believe a persons medical condtion, you can never really walk a mile in their shoes without having the same issue.
I met the two ladies who became Journey's management company thru my radio station. They told me the only concert they ever walked out on was Journey before Perry joined. After he joined, they marketed the band into superstars without payola or favoritism. Just hard work and honest relationship with radio, video outlets, and retail.
How about when your dad's car drove over the black cord entering the filling station, a ringing bell then made a staff come out, said "Fill 'er up?" and automatically cleaned your windshield and checked the tires (and maybe oil)!
I don't know if this has anything to do with algorithm problems, but I would like to offer some constructive criticism because I like a lot of what you do. I subscribed a long time ago, but find myself never clicking videos anymore. The reason for that is that there was a long span of time where I would see a title or thumbnail that made me not sure what the topic of the video was really going to be but also really curious. I'd click and start watching and after several minutes it'd be clear you're intentionally avoiding answer the question the title/thumbnail put in my head and I'd just get frustrated at the avoidance and give up and never know. Eventually I stopped clicking. I get that the tactic is to get people to click on the video and it was initially working on me, but I think in the long run, to get an audience that continues clicking videos, and who continues watching the video after clicking it, you'd do better to spend less time beating around the bush about what the topic of the video is going to be. The topics are usually interesting when I stick around long enough to find out what they are, but I just usually don't, now that I know the formula. I don't want to have to invest so much time before I even know what the video is about.
Journey had a grueling tour schedule that would be difficult on a healthy person. I have heard it mentioned that Neal was accused of having to do so because of his expensive divorces which harmed his finances basically requiring him to do more to make more.
@@jtoland2333 I'm sure the timeframe for some of that alimony has run out but then again he gave his 5th (Yes, FIFTH) wife an 11 carat ring in 2012. Seems like "wise investments" may not be in his vocabulary.
You need to do an episode, or series of episodes, called “When Egos Collide”. Coving the breakups of great and famous bands, like our beloved Journey, because of such internal conflicts.
No, he held the band hostage for 10 yrs with his demand for 1/6 of all revenue generated from live shows. That's on top of his royalties from merch, music sold in any format, etc. He also had NDA's put in place that prevented anyone associated with the band from discussing his conditions or conversations he had with Schon. It was ugly and drove the wedge btwn him and Schon even deeper causing irreparable damage. The key takeaway from their breakup is that Journey isand always has been Neal Schon s band. Steve Perry joined an already existing entity. He has no rights or ownership of them. Perry's decision to become a hermit and quit singing altogether deprived the world of who knows how much more music sung by him before his ability to do so eventually left him- which is where he is today. A Perry fronted Journey show today would leave everyone sad and disappointed and do nothing but tarnish the memories we have of what once was. The "Voice" that shot Journey to super stardom and melted the hearts of millions of fans does not exist any more and for that reason alone, there will never be a reunion . There are plenty of other reasons but that one is the one that can't be overcome.
@@stevemclean5787 I’m not sure he owed the world more music. Like Bernie Leadon with the Eagles Inc, Perry was part owner of Journey. The Eagles paid off Leadon. Not sure if Journey tried to do this with Perry. I loved the band with him. They’re ok with Arnel. They also miss Steve Smith and Ross Valory but time marches on. I’d make the argument that without Perry’s addition, they were going nowhere. Same with Cain. Schon is one of the most underrated guitar players. As a group, Journey in the 80’s was amazing. Egos get in the way. The things that make them great musicians and performers are the things that cause conflicts. I actually think Schon led Journey Through Time show was better than the current Journey. Even paying Perry all these years has allowed the others to still make some good money and deliver to the fans. The book Journey Worlds Apart is a good read.
@@pistolpeteOH The book leaves s out a lot of info that couldnt be inclufed due to the NDAs and the author not being allowed full access to the band's key people, mgrs., producers, etc. I never omplied Perry oerf snyone anything. I daid his abandonment of recording music completely, left everyone wanting more and had he not , thrre would surely have bern more great songs from him ehile his voice was still able to produce the sognsture Perry sound. If you want to read a much more complete and unfiltered yrue account of what happened with Journey , read Castles Burning. It will blow your mind and give you a much different view of Perry as a person. The piece is the entire transcript of sn interview eith Hrrnie Herbert eho was not controlled by an NDA or fear of backllash for telling the whole, real story
Adam, I have been notified of every video you have posted on this platform since I've subscribed. (Pre -Chinesium flu) And you show up in my feed daily. Having statements in the subtitles that you're being shadow banned or suppressed without addressing the subject in your video just feels a lot like click bait. Just my opinion. And I'm not an Internet troll as I would tell you to your face that you're better than that.... You are The Professor of Rock... In the words of Henry Rollins... Rise Above! We all love your content and channel!!! Sometimes the stupid algorithm hiccups. You are getting out there!!! This comment is a little proof 😊 Mike
It's not "algorithm hiccups". TH-cam's ad revenue is down. Their "tweaks to the algorithm" are not to help people find what they are interested in, what is trending, or anything of benefit to users or producers. It is purely to guide people to content that will help TH-cam maximize their profit, at the expense of the TH-camrs themselves.
"Still She Cries" off Trial by Fire had that early Journey deep cut feel to it... Great song. "Girl Can't Help It" off ROR was an underappreciated single...
@@ProfessorofRockI read somewhere that "When I Think of You" was written about Steve's mother. I play it when I want to reminisce about my mom, who passed away in 2015...
Hey Adam, are you aware of the “titles” under your video screen? They say things like, “This is bull***t, my videos are being suppressed including this one.” I’m seeing a lot of this but you aren’t mentioning anything related in your actual video. Gianni❤
Looks like the titles are all back to normal now. Many commenters here have asked about this, and some have been suspicious what he means, as they are still seeing him in recommendations and so on. Months ago, he had an imposter posting as him, claiming commenters won a prize and so on, which he briefly addressed, but I don't see him replying to anyone's questions about the alleged suppression and shadow banning.
I'm a real newbie to Journey and Steve Perry. I'm over 60 but spent the 70s and 80s following (in order) The Osmonds, David Cassidy, Spandau Ballet, Wham and Duran Duran. I came across Don't stop believing on TH-cam with the Glee version (never seen Glee) then looked for the original and I am hooked on Steve's voice. Just bought the greatest hits on CD. Have you done an interview with Steve Perry, if not please do one.
I honestly believe Steve will be back on stage with journey if only for one song. Hard to believe they haven't done a reunion tour with Steve. This breakup caught me off guard, thought Steve would do a couple solo albums and then would be back. Hopefully I will be right one day. Great episode professor!
I wouldn't exactly say Led Zeppelin broke but didn't want to go on without Bonzo. And I think for one respectful and for two there was noone in their opinion that could fill his shoes. And I personally am glad they did it their way, but I'm sure I'm in the minority on that.
I remember watching the Journey story on VH1's Behind the Music and Steve Perry said that he never felt he was really part of the band and that stunned Neal and Jonathan. I saw them in 2018 with Def Leppard and they were still great.
Love Steve. Love Journey. Hated when he left. I hated when Lou left Foreigner. Two bands that dominated the SF Bay Area music scene simutaneously at their hieght. I was distraught when Steve left. Couldnt figure out how that distinctive vocal was going to be replicated. That was the sound of Journey. Heard all the stories. And yeah. I understand when you are successful...but you cant take another step. Its painful to walk away. Bit sometimes it is the only option. I do think Steve was kinda prickish about it. But I also appreciated the way he accepted Arnel. That short clip in the doc about Arnels journey to the band is aces. Proves Steve is a quality professional despite his own issues.❤
The lead singer of the Cherry Poppin Daddies is also named Steve Perry. When they had their hit record “ Zoot Suit Riot” some newspapers in smaller markets would put Journey’s Steve Perry picture inadvertently in the promotions for their gigs.
The MOST DEVASTATING BREAK-UP of the 80s to me was "Deep Purple" after their iconic album "Perfect Strangers" I wasn't ever a Journey fan per say. My favorite Journey song was "Feeling That Way" & Steve Perry was on backup vocals through most of that tune. But I know they had a huge following. Steve is a amazing vocalist though. Not to mention the iconic guitar solo's. Great band.
For the love is strange medicine is a Terrific a Album. Yes, you should cover that most people don’t know anything that’s on it and I think it’s one of Steve’s greats I also see on traces where his life was at the moment, and I also can till the two songs that he had prior to doing that album. The album was for Kellie and if anybody doesn’t know what I’m talking about they can look into it The album traces was created just for the love of Kellie ♥️💙🎤🎶💜
I think you missed one aspect which was that Steve asked them not to tour with the name Journey while he got surgery and healed. He wanted them to use a different name.

Adam you and I are the same age, I’m 48 and I grew up in the 80’s with Journey and all of those great songs. I too was excited in ‘96 when Trial By Fire came out. I bought it on CD and I still have it. Too bad the 2nd reunion didn’t last, wish it would’ve worked out. But I still like Journey, even with Arnel on lead vocals he does a great job. He’s not Steve Perry, but he’s the next best thing. I still follow Journey and I’ll always be a fan. I’ll always be a Steve Perry fan too.
My conspiracy theory years ago was that the band rehearsed for the upcoming TBF tour and Steve knew that his voice was struggling to perform their songs like he used to. I felt that they all made up this "fight" to let Steve save face and blame it on the hip thing. Steve is a perfectionist. Maybe he felt he couldn't deliver for their fans. Don't get me wrong, I would go see a Journey concert with Steve in a heartbeat even if the songs had dropped tunings, etc.., but maybe Steve feels different about it.
I saw Steve Perry on his "For The Love Of Strange Medicine" tour. His keyboardist, Paul Taylor who was in Winger, forgot the synth riff in "Separate Ways" so Steve was right next to him miming the part with his hand the second time it came up. Steve wants it right.
I know many people will roll their eyes at this but…. I think Journey is one of the elites. Because, unlike many popular groups they did all their own vocals , wrote their own lyrics and music. Many bands “bought “ songs or covered them. Some bands brought in hired guns to play on their albums or sampled others’ music.. not journey. Hey professor you should do a show about elite bands that covered songs: ie Beatles “with a little help from my friends “ Van Halen “you really got me” etc

You and I are 100 percent on the same page here!!! My all time favorite band and unquestionable best rock singer is Journey and Steve Perry. I was completely devastated when they first broke up and over the moon when I heard about them getting back together. I couldn't wait to buy "Trial By Fire' and I was destined to finally see them in concert I thought for sure, only to be heartbroken again hearing they were splitting up again. Thought the new album was amazing, 'Message of Love' blew me away when I first heard it. Still listen to many of its songs regularly. Finally got to see Journey perform last year on their 50th anniversary tour at the age of 50, center stage 2nd row singing every word right along with Arnel who I think is awesome. Wish I could've seen those early to mid 80's concerts with Steve Perry at his unworldly peak but Journey still was incredible in 2023.
I think Steve knew he couldn’t keep hitting the notes live. I don’t blame him. Many of these aging vocalists sound horrible. Better to stop when you know you can’t do it anymore.
@@DonitaSilk evidenced where? He rarely sings in public. His voice on his solo albums was pretty marginal compared to his days with Journey in the 80’s. It’s unrealistic to think a guy in his 70’s will sing like the same guy in his 20’s and 30’s.
I loved that group. They were my first concert 1982 Chicago. Its evident that Steve knew his voice was gone. He was very gracious during the auction to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. When I learned they were united again for the Trial by Fire I was excited for their tour....but it never happened. The album (lol) was okay. It did have some great hits I liked. But like you said the times of the 90s changed in the music sense. I was a College DJ for our local radio (lol) station and we played mostly Rap and Grunge. :-(

I could listen to you talk about Steve Perry any day. He's truly my favorite voice of all time.
Solid advice
Stories like this illustrate how tricky it can be for a band to hang together. Success is no guarantee of harmony. Journey, Chicago, Styx, Van Halen, Foreigner, etc all have their stories of famous departures. Makes me appreciate Rush even more. Those three made it work for 40 years, and were always friends.
@chriscarlton3700 - Agree with what you say about a band's longevity; makes one appreciate the Rolling Stones even more. 😊

My wife and I were at the Nashville concert too. It was great! Honestly, I think Journey was a little better than Def Leppard. Not by much.
I love Neal Schon…but Steve Perry is Journey. All the other singers have ever been are great karaoke singers imitating Steve…
Neal Schon lost his powers when he got rid of the afro.
Oh, wait, Steve Miller? Now there's my jam. 😊
Going to see this concert in Houston in August. 5 hours?

If you bake something and replace butter with margarine, it might look the same, but there's no denying it's just ... off.

And a replacement member can be just as bad as raisins in chocolate chip cookies!!
We’ll said.

What’s actually amazing is that no one realizes that all singers that have joined Journey post Steve Perry (including Arnel) are emulating Steve Perry! Singing his songs with his voice. It will ALWAYS be about Steve Perry.
Of course people realize that. Arnel was selected BECAUSE he sounded like Steve Perry.

Journey played in Nashville in early 80s with the Babys opening
The Journey breakup was largely unknown at the time. It wasn’t ‘officially’ announced, or really even talked about. Most people were surprised (and found out about it) when they released their greatest hits a couple years later. I was blessed to see them with Steve in the 80s (and many times since!).
I remember when The Storm came out in the early 90's with the song "I've Got a Lot to Learn About Love", everyone thought it was Journey.
To me, a hidden gem on the "Trial By Fire" album is "Still She Cries."
“All my life I'm running
From the love that's coming
Saving grace please pull me through”.
There is a Love that is coming back. I pray that all of them find the One that offers saving grace and mercy and ultimate peace and joy.
Definitely continue doing videos about Steve Perry's solo work.
With the intensity of Steve Perry’s vocals for Journey, their tours should have been spaced out more to give him a chance to rest. They were over-booked for the money, for certain. I’ve never been surprised that it took its toll.

Great episode. Would love a video on Raised on Radio! Excellent album from one of my favorite bands.

Yes! Please do an episode on Steve Perry’s solo projects!
Being unable to move around and go on tour when the rest of your band desperately wants, even needs, to tour, makes staying together difficult.
Journey had a grueling tour schedule that would be difficult on a healthy person. I have heard it mentioned that Neal was accused of having to do so because of his expensive divorces which harmed his finances basically requiring him to do more to make more.

He was smart enough to negotiate a lifetime of royalties from all Journey shows, record sales and merchandise.
Yes he was.
The piece is the entire transcript of sn interview eith Hrrnie Herbert eho was not controlled by an NDA or fear of backllash for telling the whole, real story
Indeed.
I definitely like to see you cover For The Love of Strange Medicine. Underrated album.
This comment is a little proof 😊
Mike
Thanks for bringing that up so all I had to do was click thumbs up.
YT has been doing a lot of shady stuff lately. Mega-censorship and de-indexing smaller channels in favor of huge corporate channels.
It's not just about notifications, it's about how the algorithm recommends videos to non-subscribers. That's what really affects view counts.
I agree Flave!
@@ProfessorofRockI read somewhere that "When I Think of You" was written about Steve's mother. I play it when I want to reminisce about my mom, who passed away in 2015...
The line up of post breakup journey is still really good imo
I THINK IT'S ABOUT TIME WE SEE STEVE PERRY OPEN FOR JOURNEY. THAT WOULD BE A GREAT TOUR.
Or Journey open for Steve Perry.
Thanks My Name!
I am waiting for him to announce his reunion. If it could be just ONE night, please.
The MOST DEVASTATING BREAK-UP of the 80s to me was "Deep Purple" after their iconic album "Perfect Strangers"
I wasn't ever a Journey fan per say. My favorite Journey song was "Feeling That Way" & Steve Perry was on backup vocals through most of that tune. But I know they had a huge following. Steve is a amazing vocalist though. Not to mention the iconic guitar solo's. Great band.
But Steve’s parts on “Feelin’” (he solos the bridge) are astonishing.
@@MelanieSkipper I know, I love Steve's parts on that tune. I couldn't remember the name of it. Thanks for that. Peace..
For the love is strange medicine is a Terrific a Album. Yes, you should cover that most people don’t know anything that’s on it and I think it’s one of Steve’s greats I also see on traces where his life was at the moment, and I also can till the two songs that he had prior to doing that album. The album was for Kellie and if anybody doesn’t know what I’m talking about they can look into it
The album traces was created just for the love of Kellie
♥️💙🎤🎶💜
I think you missed one aspect which was that Steve asked them not to tour with the name Journey while he got surgery and healed. He wanted them to use a different name.
Can never get enough of Journey was devastated by their 1st breakup.

Took a lot of confidence for Journey to continue without Steve and they've lived up to it. I would have to say Kudos to the band and I am a huge Steve Perry fan.
My first concert circa 79' was THE BABYS & JOURNEY in the ol' Reunion Arena Dallas, Texas
16.5k views in 6 hours aint bad. i wish anything ive ever put out on the internet had that many views… but idk your regular numbers. i subscribe & all your videos show up for me, subscription is critical for ppl who want to stay up to date with their favorite YT channels.
I never knew Journey without Steve Perry. I didn't know about any of this. Thank you.
Yay! A Journey video! My favorite band!
He did a song on Dolby Partons new album. While at his house 🏠 here in Las Vegas I heard his song in his personal studio!
That sounds awesome!
Serious? You gotta tell me about it. I'll call on Sunday.
@@ProfessorofRock I'll hold my breast oops my breath
Would love to see you do a show on the raised on radio album.
With A Little Help From My Friends was written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney.
@@wildmercuryfilms I stand corrected. I know they covered over 20 songs. It’s hard to keep them straight.
Summer of 98 had the pleasure of two Steve Perry sing alongs at Candlestick Park
On Journey reforming…
Then: Don’t Stop Believing
Now: I’ll Be Alright Without You
Success can do funny things in rock. The perils of success and the rigors of touring can turn a band of brothers into a band apart.

Greetings melomaniac Code! I come from the land of melon. Melomelomelo...
@@TerrickTerran Sorry you had that happen! A TH-cam bot kept deleting my writing two Japanese song titles and groups elsewhere yesterday. I wonder if the same overactive bot is the one that suppresses and shadow bans some POR videos.
Please cover "Raised on Radio" and "For the Love of Strange Medicine"
I clicked this video when it said one thing and then changed to another complaint. Is this the video I clicked on?
YES! Please cover Strange Medicine!! I absolutely love that album. Saw that tour as well Lincoln Brewster is a phenomenal musician!!
❤🎉
Journey has become another Eagles/Pink Floyd/Fleetwood Mac. Firings, lawsuits, and other ridiculousness.
Bands should play music, not become a soap opera.
Have a great weekend everybody. Hope your shadow bans go away Professor.
Preach.
...no lies, on THIS one.......
I still remember the blasphemy of ELO Pt 2... rediculous
When a small group spends *that* much time together, there's going to be drama. Even in garage bands.
it's the ego and the $$$$
You and I are 100 percent on the same page here!!!
@@pistolpeteOH what, are you kidding? He’s STILL doing it!
Please fill us in on the title regarding the “bs”.
