- Barred owls are known for their distinct hoot that sounds like ‘Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all’ but here is another example of their vocalization range.
Hooty the Barred, and Flinger our Roadside Hawk both chatting away!
Both of these birds are ambassadors at OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, as they were illegally captive early in their life and are now unable to survive in the wild. They have an important role educating the public at OWL, and all over the lower mainland and Fraser valley.

Thank you for this! We must have a very LARGE and very LOUD owl close by here in Oregon..... it makes this sound at night almost exactly! it can actually be sort of scary when you don't know what it is!
The hawk sounds like a parrot lol. And the barred owl reminds me of summer nights back home in Iowa. 🥰

That's such a funny noise the barred owl is making, like a cross between a pigeon cooing and a kookaburra cackling
It almost sounds like a monkey, it’s a more rare sound but we do hear them at it in the woods. It also lets out this cryptid wail, even more rare. I was out in the woods one night when it did that!

I have a bunch of these owls near my house. I once heard an owl in the front yard and tried to imitate the sound. I got an instant reply by what sounded like three owls st the same time. Two were going "whoo whoo who who" while the last one sounded like a demented cackling maniac hooting and laughind at the same time. It sounded like they were a few feet overhead and not pleased at all. I ran inside quick because i wasnt sure what angry owls would do. Lol

A "Roadside Hawk"!? Really? Some taxonomy! Is it a young red tailed hawk? We're not all ornithologists ya know! The barred is great!

They don't get large. And this is nowhere near as loud as they can get. During mating season they catterwall sounfs like witches flying through the woods
