I actually knew someone who collected thousands of commons. He would buy commons off of people in bulk. For example, he once bought 500 random common cards from a store for $20. I thought it was weird, but I didn’t ask him why. However, things changed when I found out why he bought so many commons. I later learned that he used all of those commons cards as proxies by printing out the desired cards at Office Depot, cut them out of the paper one by one, and glued them onto the common cards. At this point, I asked him why he was doing that because it wasn’t like he could compete in a tournament with fake cards. When I asked, he told me that he prints out cards and creates proxy decks for kids to borrow who didn’t have their own decks when they came to play at the store. He said his family could never afford Yu-Gi-Oh cards growing up, and he didn’t want any kid to feel left out by being the only one without a deck. He spent his hard earned money on commons, printed pages of countless cards, sleeves, and deck boxes for each one of his decks. He also spent dozens of hours cutting and gluing all for the sake of letting other kids use them. He even taught each kid how to play the deck that they borrowed from him. This was actually recognized by the store and they held a special tournament where dozens of kids came in and played with his proxy decks for a grand prize. On top of that, the store gave him three booster boxes for free because he dedicated so much of his time and money for the sake of not letting a single kid be left out. Not all heroes wear capes or have crazy spiky hair.

My dad used to get a lot of these plastic containers that used to hold paper....at first I didn't know what to do with them but then I realize how tired I was looking for cards...or to be more precise I was tired of looking for a particular archetypes like Dragons, Warriors, Plants....etc. so what I did is I use one plastic container for every archetype..... so if I need a dragon card..... I no longer have to look through 25 tins...to find the Dragon I'm looking for. Of course the more popular rare cards or more meta-relevant cards I keep a binder.

I have way too many cards friends and I have collected ever since 2001. I don't play competitively but still get cards and keep tabs on what's going on. To organize this monstrosity of a collection, the roughly 4500 holo cards I deem worth keeping are organized by kind (Spells, then which icons, etc) in thick 900-card binders with labels placed on them with a sharpie writing over masking tape stuck to the sides.
My tins of commons (and some rares) are the same. I've even asked for empty megatins in the past. Monsters go by kind first (Normal, Ritual, etc) then by Level, then by alphabetical order. And I go like that for everything. It takes me seconds to reach for anything I want at any time.
Though I still don't keep everything. Getting new cards every once in a while means some crappy cards will be pulled, and I can end up with 15 copies of something I don't use from going to a sneak peek. I generally add them up in boxes and try to give them away. I only keep what will make fun decks I actually want to build, or what holds sentimental value like the Gate Guardian and whatnot.
Another problem though, is that it is not easy to keep it that way. Once a year or so random piles will be adding on top of the collection, which I eventually need to return to where they were at. I'm messy, and my brother and I consider it our collection so we are 2 people picking at the same collection every time we have a whim of building anything.
At some point we made like 30 decks ranging from starter deck Yugi level, to PePe. Umm I just got off-topic here.
    Anyways, nice video ;D

What about the "library" route? I more or less keep my cards in this manner:
1 big binder for cards that group as archetypes, in which a number of pages are dedicated to a single archetype (and as a result, if I want to play that arhetype, I leave the pages empty until I return them in the binders)
1 big binder for cards that group as supports for specific type or attribute, such as dragons, warriors, etc.
Several small albums that hold all the other cards that (a) don't fit together as an archetype, or (b) too few to dedicate a page in the binder for them.
I hope to once collect 3 copies of each card in the game someday... (25000 cards *gulp*)

Excellent video, Yuginono. Back when I had a much more sizable collection (2009), organizing my commons, sucked. Especially, considering I also did a lot of trading with my locals. But it is worth putting in the time. The reason being that A) you can easily find what you're looking for and B) depending on formats certain cards will be valuable and being able to have them for use of trading can be all the worth it.
Overall, thank you for doing this. I think newer players and the community in general can greatly benefit from stuff like this.

But how do you organize this shit? You'll never be able to find what you need if you put commons into binders, because you wont remember what you found good enough for the binder at a specific time. However, I have my common spells and traps sorted alphabetically and my monster by type and it's still a pain to go through stuff.

Sorry to break it to you but your level of organization is nothing compared to mine. I organized all absolutely all of my cards in archetypes in binders, commons and foils together (kept 3 copies at least of each card and the rest of them are in tins). In the archetypes I have the monsters of the archetype, the spells, the traps and the fusions monsters if there are any. For the generic monsters I sorted them based on the type (plants, fish, warriors etc). For the generic traps I have a separate binder and the traps are organized based on their effect or archetype for example all the mirror forces together, all the trap holes together, all the traps that negate monster effects together and so on. For the spells I also have separate binders, again they are organized based on the effect and/or archetype (rank-ups all together for example) but further more they are separated in normal spells, fields, continues, quick play, equip; ritual and ritual related. And of course at the end I numbered the binders and made a list in excel what archetype/type is in each binder (only for the monsters because I have only 3 binders in total of spells and traps). And of course for the xyz and sycnhros I have separate binders and in there the monsters are also sorted in themes or archetypes. Yes it took me moths to sort all of my huge collection in that way, but now whenever I look for a card it takes me maximum 1 minute to find it. Of course the newest cards are also organized right away in this way. So in the end I know also what cards I don't have. PS classically banned cards are kept together in a separate section of a binder.

  • @Sandata64RD

My old way of handling them as a kid was to use the spare money I would collect to buy zipper binders. I would put 3 cards into one slot both from and back for a total of 6 cards in each slot. Organizing them by Warrior/aqua/machine and so forth. With the spell/trap cards by normal/equip/continuous/quick/field ect.
The flaw with this is that zipper binders get harder to find, You need about 2 for your magic and trap cards and 2 for all of your monsters. What it helped was that it allowed my younger kid mind to know exactly where a card should be if I needed to improve a deck. Also while zipped up the entire thing became snug, and never had that tip upside down oh wait their are all your cards on the floor now issue.
This method allows weaker players to keep every card nice and neat. While the higher players will laugh at seeing a binder full of weak useless cards. Still, if for some reason cards get more popular because of newer things, you'll know where to find them.
All the spare cards should be put into a spare container, and a useless container. You might also want to have a small ban container as well.

Here is what I did, I organized them by monsters/spells/traps/rare/side or good cards into white binders and sleeves. I posted all the ones I didn't want and managed to sell them by lowering my expected price. Now im clutter free with only my decks and have beefed them up with solemn strikes etc. Btw I made $300 by selling as a collection and in smaller groups ofcourse its unlikely that a buyer will shell out 300 so sell in smaller groups.

YugiNoNo - What I like to do is buy the white boxes that are made to hold Sports Cards, which are available in various sizes. I like the 550 count boxes. Because they fit in my backpack. Anyways, I also buy the cheap penny sleeves (again for Sports Cards), and because they are larger I can put multiples in each sleeve. Normally up to around 10 copies of a card. And, there you have it alphabetically saved cards. P.S. I owned a card shop as a teenager. So I'm ubber good at sorting cards. And, trust me once you have it done it takes no time to keep it that way. Probally cost me 20-30 bucks?!?! Soooo worth it!!!

I put all my commons and rares in those big white boxes in alphabetical order. I only have my binders full of supers, ultras, secrets etc etc. Have 6 3-ring binders all alphabetical order - monsters in their own, traps in their own and spells in their own. But I have OCD so I suppose that helps.

Rare cards tend to hurt my eyes a lot and I really don't enjoy that
