How to NOT socialize your puppy!😮 (Puppy Training)

  • Should your dog be friendly all the time? Proper dog training takes guidance and leadership, and so does socializing your dog. Some dogs, especially puppies cant get overwhelmed, and it can cause long-term fear in your dog.

I love to call it "socialization" vs "exposure". Social = greet and learn calm behaviors, exposure: being around other things and being calm and neutral

Great way of putting it! I was going to disagree with him until I saw your comment and realized whet I have done is exposure.
I have a 1.5 year old Cane Corso female. She doesn't take commands from anyone but me. You can stand there saying "Sit" until you're blue in the face and she won't respond. But I can whisper "sit" or quickly flash our hand sign for it and she sits immediately.
I have exposed her to everything since I got her at 10 weeks old. I've taken her to Home Depot, Petco, Dog Parks, etc. I used to seek out roadside construction, take her out of the car and do training exercises right mext to them while they were jackhammering away.
She is so awesome in even the most intense situations. We go to the local Live Music/Food Trucks/Arts and Crafts fair every Friday and she is totally calm the whole time.
You get the respectful people who ask if they can approach or pet your dog, but for every one of them you get 9 who just go straight for the dog. While I fully support having healthy boundaries for your dog, I personally didn't want a dog that couldn't handle those intense situations calmly, especially a personal protection breed like a Cane Corso. Lucy can have 10 people surrounding her and petting and talking to her and stay calm the entire time. She gets compliments everywhere we go on how relaxed, friendly and gentle she is, especially with children.
Don't get me wrong, if a dog tries to hump her or snap at her, she is totally capable of correcting then and setting boundaries. And on the few occasions we've dealt with aggressive people she immediately has the instinct to put herself between me and any danger and would die before she let anyone hurt me, her dad. But she never misjudges a situation and gets over protective, and she never escalates anything, she uses the minimum amount of force necessary to keep me safe and assert healthy boundaries.
Having a dog that isn't reactive to situations and trusts in and follows your lead because they know you, as their leader, will make the right decisions, is amazing.

I learned real quick with my first dog that you have to be a role model. They aren’t just accessories to your life. You have to actively train them, socialize them, feed them well, get them exercise and be the leader that they need. I eventually got my first one under control and once she started getting grey hairs she was a fully relaxed, playful, and useful part of the family. She was broken of jumping on people, i now trust her around my great grandmother with dementia, she doesnt get in her way and on the rare occasion that she does sneak out when im not around, she stays around her so she has something to lean on to catch her breath. Not so much anymore because she got diabetes and went blind, but she helped me train my other two puppies when they were little on how to be a good dog. If you’re a good role model to a dog, your dog will reflect that. Those puppies now do the same things my oldest one does. They constantly stage themselves out of my grannies way, yet conveniently on either side so that she can balance herself with them. They obey the property line at all times, the come on the first recall, i can tell them to stay and leave for 10 minutes and they will still be right there in that spot, they know how to retrieve things for me, they go down to the road and get the packages and bring them up for a bacon treat. My old blind diabetic dog was such a great role model to my other dogs, i couldnt ask for a better blessing than having my three fart hounds😂

Crazy, there’s people that I’ve come met that say a dog has behavioral problems because they lacked in socialization when younger, even though they were socialized plenty. They fail to realize how important obedience and the relationship with the owner are in relation to behavioral issues 🙁

Larry Krohn prefers the term "exposure" which I like because there is quite the misconception of what socialization actually means. I constantly deal with clients that say they socialized their puppy from 8 weeks a ton, and did the dog park 4 or 5 days a week or more but then at 8 to 12 months dealing with a very reactive or over excited dog because they see more value and get more reinforcement playing with dogs than their humans. Neutral is the absolutely best, and exposure is key, along with GOOD experiences in a controlled and structured environment when they do get to play off leash etc. Thanks for sharing!

Had someone ask to pet my 1yr old APBT at the playground yesterday. The park itself is dog friendly so while my daughter was on the playground, I took time to train Kova in a more energetic environment (in the field next to the playground). A lady walked up and asked if she could pet her, to which I said “No ma’am I’m sorry not right now”. She immediately assumed my dog was aggressive and verbally attacked me because of it. I tried explaining to her that I’m training her right now and when I was done I’d be more than happy to let her say hi. She didn’t like my answer and when I was done 15mins later, I walked the 50ft to the playground so my daughter and her friends could play with Kova. Well the lady made a scene. She called the cops and they told them “there is a vicious pit bull off a leash here lungeing at children”. A bold faced lie. Thankfully when the cops came the moms and dads there sided with me and told the officers that the woman is lying and my dog had been leashed the entire time and that she only time she moved forward at someone, that someone was MY child and my dog was simply giving her kisses. She could’ve easily turned this into a horrible situation for my dog and family. More so because she is an American Pit Bull Terrier and the stigma the media has portrayed of them. Moral of the story, just because someone says no to you petting their dog, DOES NOT MEAN THE DOG IS AGGRESSIVE!

I've been watching your videos to learn how to train my puppy. She is an Australian shepherd, 4 months old. There is a huge dog that is just a few doors over from me that scares her as well as myself and other neighbors. When I take Dolly out potty and that dog is outside I end up taking her over to my neighbors yard area to do her business. What can I do to ease her and my fear? I'm trying to leash train her and it's frustrating when this dog barks and strains his lead trying to get at us. The owner has it on a rope lead.

When relatives visit she doesn't stop barking even for a second. She'll bark for as long as someone else is at home. She doesn't like kids. She'll bark at any person or dog, walking in the street (we live on the first floor). She is easily scared of ppl. She has also been very aggressive to me and my elder sis but no one else in the family. When me and my sis were the ones who took most care of her since she came
Idk what to do and my mom is saying that she's going to leave her at an NGO as she is always barking and neighbors hv been complaining. She's 3 btw

The pup should learn that people are good. But again there are a million ways to train the same thing and each one is specific to each dog. Props to educating people man. Very well explained.

So how can I reverse these behaviors. Just took over ownership of this dog and I've established discipline and boundaries at home. But she'll run up to people and other dogs and bark at them. But won't bite. However, that's still scary for both parties because they don't know that she's not aggressive. What's a good place to start? Right now she's staying on the leash from now on and I make sure people don't approach her immediately.

My dog is totally uninterested in other dogs. Dogs can run up to him and he doesn't even acknowledge them. He wants to smell everything and checkout the area. ACCEPT with really old dogs. He will follow an old dog everytime. If a dog comes up while he's walking with the old dog, it's fine. He won't even pay attention to the new dog.
I go out and he plays if I play with him, then he gets bored and walks away continuing to check out the smell. The only time he made any aggressive response was the first time a large dog charged at me, playfully, he growled and showed his teeth. The warning stopped the dog and ended up smelling him and walked away. That is the only time it occurred.
Should I let him continue to be disinterested? How do you get a dog interested and wanting to play? I've never seen a dog so uninterested in other dogs.

My 10 month old German Shepherd puppy does not like strangers (which I am very glad for). She did not know my Dad and would bark till she got his scent. My next door neighbor she does not like. She will bark and her her fur up and everything. Now my son brought home his husky/shepherd dog. At first the dogs did not get along. It took about 3 weeks for them to finally play together. Now unfortunately we were feeding my puppy her morning meal and the husky bit her. Not bad she had a little bleeding around her ear and a slight cut on the top of her head. Now that was about a month ago. My puppy will not tolerate the husky at all. We cannot have them in the same room at all. Do you have any suggestions to correct this behavior?
