I got a 8.5 week old husky a few days ago. He’s been a handful!
Biting me all the time, jumping, etc… I’ve tried doing the snout closing whenever he’d bite me, FAIL. It only encouraged him. I was starting to feel very stressed and discouraged.
However, today I tried something new: Yelping whenever he bits me and then ignoring him for 30-60 seconds.
Whenever he bits or chews something I don’t want him to: yank his collar once (abruptly) and say “Leave It” in a stern voice. Once he obeys, I praise him; sometimes giving him a treat or a toy. In just one day, he’s listening 95% of the time! I’m so relieved to have found something that helped.
I started watching your puppy videos about a week before I picked him up, and I have found them to be EXTREMELY helpful!! Thank you so much for posting these.
When I got my puppy, I either kept him in his crate or watched him. I was able to stop him from doing bad things the first time he tried to, so he never got the impression that it was okay. When people first get a puppy, they let them do bad things because it's cute. By the time they realize it's a bad habit, it's already too late.
Agree 100%
But how did you manage to make him stop?
@@zz.158 Just shout “no” loud enough for them to be frightened. I know people don’t like shouting at cute puppies, but it’s for their own good
@@kdog8787 I see. Thanks
💯
That face as Tom is explaining everything. 😊❤
I really appreciate and respect Tom. I don't start this type of corrections at 13 weeks because at this age puppies have little ability for impulse control until about 5 months. So even if he experiences discomfort, he will likely keep going back again and again if bored. I focus on redirection, exercise, new experiences that distract and finally confinement.
Found this as my pup is chewing my couch & bruising my arms. Thank you for the puppy series!! 🐶 🐕🐾❤️
i love how he listens when you speak he’s so cute🥹
I’m sorry, but this video made me laugh so much. Memories of my husky boy who was a NIGHTMARE for biting at that age. And that craziness when they go from one bit of trouble to the next on a second by second basis, oh jeez, It was EXHAUSTING!!! To see an experienced trainer like Tom having to juggle and wrestle the craziness is very wholesome😂 House leash was the best piece of training I have ever been given. It made the job of behaviour management so much easier. George is now 2 and a half, and a really good boy. But I won’t lie..it was a long, hard road…and a LOT of hard work. But putting that time in when they are young pays back triplefold. For anyone struggling with that young dog stress….stick with it and be consistent. The rewards are worth it 🥰
I just got a husky pup myself (8.5 weeks old) would you say to train him right away? :)
Finally, I was waiting for this video. I got my puppy 2 days before you announced your pups arrival and It's been so helpful. I was at a lost for a bit on correcting a "leave it" cause he just doesn't respond to his martingale collar anymore. Definitely getting him this plastic collar right now. Thanks Tom for everything you do!
So never grew up with dogs, and not even planning to get a dog soon. But, I really enjoy your content. I love learning new things and proper ways to train puppies if I do in the future get one.
This is a great idea to do the live show of puppy in the house. And what a great breed to do it with. Not so easy as to make everybody feel bad, because their dog won’t do it. My dream breed would be a Neapolitan mastiff. Also, very serious breed. So I’m paying a lot of attention to you!
hey tom loving the puppy series keep it up
Thank you for the wonderful advice so helpful
Awesome video, Tom. PLEASE keep these coming!
The tab leash is such a good idea! ❤
I’m about to adopt my first dog and I’m loving this series…. Post more often plssss 😂❤
Fantastic video... Very helpful. Thanks for your Tips
That dog is getting big fast.... lol He is gonna be a big boy !
Almost to 1 million subscribers let’s go ❤
This video is underrated. Thank you for the help! I will definitely be implementing these ideas!
Loving the puppy series and Burleigh, thanks Tom!
We are getting a puppy in the fall and I'm loving your videos. Its helping prepare myself and my husband. I just stay playing your puppy videos!
I'm thrilled to see you use the Starmark collar. I've been using it for about 15yrs in my training practice and still almost no one has heard of it. It's a great tool for training and walking on leash 🐾
That puppy is adorable
Thanks, Tom. As usual you show the best humane treatment of animals. Bless you
Long time subscriber and I have trained all my own dogs, but always learning.
I literally found a puppy last night taking my dog on a walk. While she stays with me (looking for owner) I’m instilling these lessons. I’ve always worked with sub adult to adult dogs, never a puppy. Could use a support system right now!! Reaching out to my no bad dogs community for help and support
great video, first trainer I have seen give a fair but meaningful lesson on not chewing, love it
Tom, first of all, Burleigh is so stinkin cute 🥰 secondly, and more importantly is, this video is brilliant! I found this to be very helpful and easy to understand. Now, I just need to just go get a dog🤣🤣. 7:40
My dog was a true landshark and she drove me crazy as a pup! In the end teaching her 'no' by immediately giving her the consequence of staying ten seconds in the bathroom after the unwanted behaviour worked like magic. Just a 'no' and then picking her up (when I could still carry her) without any emotion or extra words. Then letting her try again and repeat the series of events until she understands the relationship between her action, the word and the consequence. She understood really fast after we started doing that and it still works with new things we encounter. What I love about this technique is that it's not a physical consequence, but still an unwanted outcome for her as it separates her from the action and the excitement. The only downside is that you can't apply it when you're out on the street.
You put your dog into the bathroom water?why did it work?
I just ended up watching the gorgeous pup and not listening properly 😂😂😂
Your puppy is so adorable! 😊
Looking forward to going along this journey with you. I got a German Shepherd puppy right around the same time you got your pup.
So informative, wish this was here in August when I brought home my Cane Corso… We are still constantly reinforcing the command “leave it”. I’ve also found that as he’s getting older, I’d feel like I’m revisiting basic obedience with him. We are hitting 10 months and he’s weighing in at 125lbs.
I have the same same type of dog and I subscribed and Liked all of your videos
Oh I wish I had some if these ideas when my niece got her new pup. 🐾💜
Oh, I just found this one. This was eight or nine days ago so hopefully you’re gonna have another one soon.
Thank you🎉.
I thought puppies needed to learn how to "play bite" so later in life they knew the difference between mouthing and biting
Good video Tom. You forgot to put the thumbnail for crate training so you just pointed to your pendant light that needs adjusted lol.
Teaching drop it and leave it helped significantly with our puppies (: I always teach this first
Your dog loves you
love a tab leash!
Burleigh is so freaking adorable 😭😭😭😭💘
Hi Tom, just got my puppy and loving your videos!! Where can I get the star pinch collar from, I don’t see it on your website ?
I‘m really amazed by the body and shape of this puppy, totally sturdy, wide and solid, I guess boerbel genetics, really impressive, and definitely not my kind of dog, totally theoretical if I could keep one, his temperament and determination really are daunting to me
Yes very helpful thnk you Tom!!!
Bout to teach my Malinios X puppy whom is ironically also 13 weeks old. to stop biting me !
Although the little smart ass knows how hard he can bite before it actually hurts me which has made me put off the corrections.
But I have recently noticed his drive becoming more and therefore his biting controll a little less😂
The whole biting thing for me was stopped by holding his mouth shut, so he couldnt bite. Took two times and he never did it again.
My friend’s dog had a biting problem. The dog nearly bit his ear off when the dog was a year old.
My friend yelled in pain and bled all over. His dog has never bit him or anyone since. He doesn’t even lick people. Just sniffs.
I love Tom. He's a fantastic, intuitive trainer. So helpful! 🏆
But why does that puppy have access to any of those things to wreck them?
I have been breeding for over 20 years with working bred pups and have less damage.
When mine are chewing, they are on a leash unless they are in a kennel or a crate or an ex pen... it makes things so much simpler.
Come to Sweden plz!!🙏🏼
So, I do have a question... In regards to the tab leash type corrections... I noticed that he doesn't like your hand approaching his neck to grab that tab to correct because he has, rightly, associated that movement with a correction. Could that run you into trouble down the road with him being reactive towards hands coming toward that area (Collar grabs, etc)?
It's one of the reasons why I umbilical chord leash wear. (This prevents the long leash dragging problem but it also means that the correction comes from far enough away that the hand and arm reaching toward that area is not associated with anything negative.
In your experience, have you run into reactivity towards that movement down the road?
And if anyone has trouble with their puppy chewing the longer leash as it's hanging down, I find attaching an extended choke chain or small chain to the leash then clip other end to collar so that the first twelve to eighteen inches of the leash is metal, which curtails that issue.
Tom, do you have links to where I can get these collars?
Super helpful (even fo handling a grown up dog). But are you aware of slip-leashes with a tab, *but* with a stopper in the neck-loop? German regulations demand the latter, and I've only found accepted slips with a sliding tab, which - as you describe - just don't stay put. And I feel this is the detail that would help our dog yield better (seeing prongs and e-collars are also banned).
My French mastiff was a terror ,he is now a 1 1/2 . Toys ,toys, and more toys .
Can you do a video on what you do with aggression, growling or anything in that realm at that age?
Hello, I dont see a link to your recommended plastic pinch collar? Maybe I am missing it here... thanks
Do you have a link to the collar you used on your puppy?
My dog as a puppy chewed the plaster in the wall- more than ONCE!!
I be glad if I meet you in game 😊
More videos plzzz
How do you feel about scruffing?
Ordered the tug leash. Our puppy need jumping and playfully nipping our 3 year old. Hope this helps
I just got a chipit he’s a ankle biter, can you just use a regular leash and then Yank it a little bit to reinforce direction?
Tom thank you for all of your videos. I am using them to train our 13 week old Staffy puppy. Can you tell me or direct me to videos that would show how to get her to stop running from you when she has something she shouldn't have? She loves to grab things and run and hide under our coffee table with them. She will even do this with her toys. She's done this since we got her a month ago. Thank you!!
Keep her on a leash!
I have a adult rescue that is mouthy. This is the second I rescued that is mouthy. I read if they were separated as puppies to young from littermates it can make them mouthy adults. He is non agressive. But very mouthy about biting a shoes. Legs. Arms. Face when giving kisses. He just doesn’t realize how rough he is being. It’s like a pinch. Will this technique work for a adult dog? If not do you have a video to direct me to that is on that topic?
Can you use an e collar?
My 16 week Olde English Bulldogge puppy is jumping on me and biting me😳when I use soft tones he ignores me, when I put bass in my voice he runs away😢Help!!!
When I try to use the tab leash my puppy just chews on it the whole time. How do I fix this problem?
Do say leave it before, during or after the tug correction? When does the command turn into before? If the don’t leave it do you tug and say leave it a second time?
I would give the verbal command slightly before the physical correction. That way the puppy has the chance to do the right thing without being corrected. If you give it at the same time it doesn't get that chance.
My puppy is 11 weeks old and this tab leash idea is not working. She bites the end of it. I’ve cut it shorter and shorter and she still gets the end of it. There’s hardly any to grab to tug at for me now. Not working. Seemed like a good idea though. I have a martingale collar on her too. Wish it would have worked. On to another idea.
I'm in the yard training my 3.5 yr old GSD named Knox 1:00
He's 3.5 yrs old but I've only had him 1.5 months
My 7 month old puppy has learnt not to bite hard on hands and doesn't chew furniture and such now, BUT he grabs my clothes so bad still! Please help. Ive tried everything i can can. Drop its and leave its work on other things but not this behavior.
now what do you do when your 8 week old GSD turns and snaps at you after you pop the leash?
What breeder is that Boerboel from? I'm interested in getting one soon
Peterbuilt Boerboel - Magnolia, TX
what about when it's a year and a half old and still very mouthy?
what if my puppy is biting agressively/defensively? 12 week rotty.
I tried the Method couple times, worked at the moment, but it gave a side affect. My 9 weeks giant schnauzer puppy got out off control he barks, attacks excessively after wards
In other videos, you just 1. said "No!" to the dog, 2. prevented it from keeping on biting, 3. redirected it on a toy. It seemed less aggressive.
I wish I had this with my puppy 3 years ago, the worst biter ever! He'd just get more riled up, we had to get real strict at 7 months old because it was real bad and he's a big boy. But yeah this seemed clear even to a small pup.
What worked for you? My puppy gets riled up more when I try to stop him from biting as well.
How old is puppy in the video?
Can't find the tab leash. Is this out of stock right now?
You can make your own! Just cut a leash
@4:34 for a surprise 💨
❤️❤️❤️
this is the guy if he say buy this buy it
0:25 - 0:28
I'm no botanist but aren't those Cypress Trees/Bushes?
Cypress is toxic to animals (Dogs/Puppies), right?
I had no problem with my puppy chewing on my hand coz she was easy on it until one day she clamped down on it and I saw bone and I was bleeding 😂laughed but was in pain. We still play fight and she goes for my hand now she's 1and a half years old.
Sorry Tom, it doesn’t work! He just wants to bite the small leash and thinks I’m just playing! When I tug on the leash, he then reaches to bite my hand!
You’re not doing it right. You’re not supposed to tug on the leash. Watch the video again
Whats your opinion on grabbing your dogs tong when they play/puppy bite you?
My dog would only have thought it was a fun game 😂
That's ridiculous. If you want to keep your dog from biting you, you might hold thier mouth shut, but that's quite challenging to do and not block thier noses. They still should be able to breath after all.
@@erinlikesacornishpasty4703 how is it ridiculous? Also by holding their mouth closed all that does is turn it into a game, there isnt any punishment in holding their mouth shut compared to holding their tongue until they decide to stop chewing on u which then u just let go making them realise that they will be unconforetal when they bite u
Didn’t leave the collar in the description.
Where’s our next video??? I’m literally training my puppy along with you. What are we doing now?
Me! 😂❤
My puppy just wont stop biting. He is biting all the time, my feet, my hand, my neck, my boob, anything he can put his mouth on honesly I love him but I dont know what to do 😢
I taught my BRT no teeth on skin right away. The leave it rule for inanimate objects. The breeder started and I followed the rule from there. They are too big and too strong to bite human at play.
… Mine loved to chew on wooden everything and I have lost 5 pieces of furniture in the teething stage …
I tried that thing on her and she just put in her mouth and started running around with it
No more Tom Davis Dogtra 203c?
Tom advocates tools to suit the situation. So the Dogtra might come out later. For example when Puppy is learning to recall.
I’m not gonna dispute the results or training of a professional dog trainer but subjectively speaking, I find it very effective to emulate an injury when the dog bites. So, literally when the dog bites or gets too rough I just exclaim ouch! And that always invokes empathy in the dog who immediately stops, check that I’m OK and often “apologizes “by kissing and licking the place he bit.
🙌🏼praise the lord💕🐶🙏🏻
Did you poop your self there bud? 4:34
Hope not
Don't correct your dog😡...
Otherwise he might become a gentleman and begin a successful business
I wish you would say "Chewing on his owner's slipper", not "on his dad's slipper. It's incredibly creepy that you English speaking dog owners' call yourselves dog parents... please find new words.
(In Swedish mom and dad are mamma and pappa whereas animal owners are called matte and husse) How about you make up a few good names for human dog "parents" and spread them in the English speaking dog world?
After all you're a REAL father now... surely you don't see your son as a dog? 😁 Get my point?
Keep wishing
Love the videos. I am dealing with a high energy pup so seeing this very obedient pooch is comical as much as I believe you, I’m like, “ this won’t be that easy lol”
