    Italy was fragmented and disjointed since the fall of Rome and only unified i 1871. In this video, I explore what would have happened if Cosimo de' Medici used the treaty of Lodi to unify Italy in 1454.

      yeah, I will admit, this is not a very realistic scenario at all. Italy was far too fragmented and divided for unification to be possible, but I thought it was a the Italic League was a cool point to jump off into a different scenario. The wars were all based on real wars, the Italo-Ottoman war in this is basically the Venice-Ottoman war of the real world, but now a united italy would be stronger than Venice so they would win. I used the agreed upon outcome by the real european allies for my scenario. The burgundian wars did occur in real life and I think Italy probably would have wanted savoy, so an alliance with france made sense. The wars against the mamluks were a combination of the mamluks-portugese wars and the mamluks-ottoman wars. I would encourage you to read into these conflicts as they are pretty interesting and not well known. I try my best to have some basis in historical scenarios, while still changing things, but yeah, its obviously not realistic. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video and if you have any suggestions for future videos, let me know

      @@Videntis.History I appreciate your reply, I didn’t mean to come across as overly negative, it’s certainly a very interesting scenario and not ultimately too unrealistic. I just was skeptical of the degree to which the ottomans suffered losses in this timeline, but I’ll do more research into the wars you’ve mentioned. Anyways good job on the video and thanks for introducing me to some new conflicts to look into! Cheers man

      Well 1450's Ottomans were not at the peak of their power, while many italians duchies were at the height of their power, with Italy as a whole being as rich or possibly even richer than all Germany and France.
      The fleet of such a nation would surely beat the Ottomans one. And the troops that could be deployed and paid would be surely higher than any Real life anti-ottoman coalition that fought the Ottomans up to this point in our timeline.
      The true problem of this video is that all the powers in the italian nation or alliance collaborate way too easily.
      For example, France and Austria would not be pleased to see a rival being born under their nose.
      An unified Italy would probably want to take Sardinia and Sicily from Spain.
      After some times it would be hard to justify Italy owning most of Greece, since the Byzantine Empire main ethicity has Always been greek.
      France would possibly fight to keep the French Savoy Independent or at least try to annex part of It, since givin Italy full control of the Alps would make that a very weak border.

    If italy was to unite in 1454, under a roman style republic, it would be very possible that much of history would be drastically changed, as medieval europes punching bag was basically italy, and with it uniting into one state 300 years earlier than in our timeline, it would likely cause changes to, per example, the hapsburg dynasty, which would never really come to prominence like in our timeline but instead be more of a historical fun fact, the napoleonic wars might also be changed, with it being likely that italy wouldn't have been partitioned between austria and france (the Treaty of Leoben is the prime example of this), but instead would probably end up as a forced french ally, like Austria and Prussia were.
    There is honestly so much that could've changed it is quite frankly unreal

    In a realistic scenario I always thought that a united Italy in that time would have been essentially what Venice was in our timeline but way worse for everyone else in Mediterranean... On paper it may have been the most powerful country in Europe at that time and the fact that a significant part of it would have been part of the HRE would have also rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, it would had essentially the claim to be at least partially the Roman empire and the power to expand like it.

    The idea is very interesting but I find in it some critical point:
    1. You assume that this new italian republic would be very stable and not Just collapse After the death of its founding fathers. In my opinion the Italian dinasties Who formed this new republic would scrumble for power and increase their own Power base even of It means harming the functioning of the state.
    2. I think that the ottoman army would be much more of a threat than what you portrayed. Mehmed II was a great Commander and a war on this many fronts would have stretched the italiana forces and supply lines very thin allowing the ottomans to react Better. So i think the war you portrayed would probably end in a costly stalemate with the Italians holding parts of Greece and ruling the waves while the Ottomans would've beat some weakear enemy like the Moldavians.
    3.althoug this new world of alliances you created is very interesting I think that spain and Italy, maybe After an initial cooperation, would've start fighting For the control of the eastern mediterrean Sea and especially sicily and Sardinia. Other than that i think that the HRE and Italy would become rivals as well, because the First would oppose a strong neighbor where It was its playground.
    Please take all of this as constructive critics, i think that your work Is of very High quality both in tecnic and narrative, and you are very creative in tour ideas. I enjoyed very much watching this video and i think that you have a very High potential. All the best :)

I portrayed the republic in the best sense, but in reality, families would probably be bribing people and their would be some corruption behind the scenes. I don't think it would collapse though as the upper class became very wealthy from the union. Its hard to say how long an Italian-Spanish alliance would have lasted, but I am sure after the muslims were removed as a common enemy, there would be conflict eventually.

    This italian republic would also get Sicily from Spain, because it was strongly linked to the Kingdom of Naples, that in reality wasn't even called like that. As you know, at some point in history there was a Kingdom of two sicilies, and that's because during the France reign in italy Naples and Sicily were united in only one Kingdom that was named "Kingdom of Sicily". When the kingdom was split in half by France and Spain, their territories were both counted as the same Kingdom, and both were sicilies. It would be stupid to give only one part of the Kingdom to a reborn Italy and It would feel like shit, lmao

      No, for the simple fact that in that period the kingdom of Sicily and the kingdom of Naples had two very distinct and separate governments, commanded by two different viceroys. This is because the Sicilian independence sentiment has always been very present on the island, starting with the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 up to the uprisings of 1848.
      Even under the Normans and the Swabians the Sicilian parliament in Palermo has always had a certain autonomy, after more than two centuries of separate government I doubt they would have gladly accepted a unification under a "foreign" ruler

    Love the in depth video but I have some criticism:
    1) I doubt the crusade could have so easily crushed the Ottomans. Italy has to maintain supply routes across seas on multiple fronts, cohesion with her allies, and stability following such a big unification, while the Ottomans have defenders advantage and were very strong at this point. No doubt Italy would be a powerhouse and one of the strongest countries in Europe, but fighting such a war, even with strong allies, wouldn’t go that far. I think the crusade would still “win”, but the Ottomans would have to give minor concessions instead of being wiped of the face of the world.
    2) A Spanish-Italian alliance with Sicily and Sardinia still disputed would collapse immediately.
    3) Italy technically still being part of the Holy Roman Empire while claiming succession to Rome is bound to have consequences
    4) How are the great powers, especially France, so unbothered by an overpowered Italy popping up out of nowhere?
    Basically, I think the video is far, *far* too optimistic, but the presentation and idea are really good and fun to watch

    @Nostradamus I have a few problems:
    - Venice beating Sforza is a very solid POD if not the most plausible Renaissance POD, but the problem is that Venice would eat up the entire Lombardy/Linguria regions and become a 800 lb gorilla within Italy before Medici could do anything if it beats Sforza. The entire Lombardy was a vacuum after Visconti's death and Sforza was the only obstacle to Venice's domination of North Italy.
    - Thus, Medici would not be able to exert influence like he did in this TL because Venice would have had the final call. Florence was weaker militarily and economically than even the original Venice, let alone the expanded Venice. If anything, Florence would have become Venice's next target.

To many people who calim to do Alt history get to wrapped up in the why nots and every single real world detail and fact. This is a fake timeline, and i'm glad you have fun because so do we. Don't ever stop having fun with your work here man, to many channels fall into the trap of eventually making what they think others want or give in to some bs comments by haters, keep your passion alive and you will never grow bored with this! You are also great at doing more unique and less thought of alt history scenarios, a lot of the other good alt history channels get caught up in the more "significant" events, WW2/WW1, Crusades and Rome stuff, scenarios like this and your Vandal video are really cool and interesting, it's like a breath of fresh air in this genre.

    Personally I think that had italy unified in 1454, it would definetly struggle to survive it's early days for a bunch of reasons like;
    the fact a lot of these city states were already be in the HREc which would turn it and by extension the rest of the Habsbugs against the young rebelious republic, as well as obviously the ottomansc which would be pretty concerned at to have a new potential rival power in it's backyard, and finally the the pope, being in this so called "republic" which is more of a federation really, would have been seen as compromised for by his own interests to all his enemies and other neutral states, so he would pay the heavy price of alienating a lot of catholics and therefore loosing more influence by actually joining this.
    The only way I could see the Italian republic survive it's early days is with foreign only with some form of foreign help, which cant be the HRE nor the Habsbourgs since they de facto rebelled against them, and obviously not the ottomans because of clashing interests in the mediterrenean, as well as not the spaniards because they wouldn't have much to gain by helping this republic. Which just like tyou said i would only leaves the young Republic with France, a far more militarily powerfull nation and the only state that could actually be inclined to be ally to italy. The problem is that france being the disproporsionally more powerfull player, italy would automatically make vecome, at best, France's junior partner, at worse, a full on french protectorate (by the way altough I see the reasoning behind it, I cant see the Republic wanting to integrate savoy, I think it would rather leave it as a buffer while france would maybe buy off corsica in that time).
    Also the republic could not have basically single handedly defeated the ottomans (quite litterally the most powerfull nation in that time), not to menion that italy wouldn't be in any position to actually antagonize, and definetly not attack the ottomans simply because it would put France, italy's big brother, in a position where it would have to choose between the ottomans, a potential powerfull ally over italy, a young rebel republic, because of it's Agean claims, which would have to be abandonned in order to safe the alliance with France.
    But had the new republic survived it's rough beginning, it would have been an absolute economic powerhouse (at least until america is dicovered) and it would have even more of a golden age than it had OTL, imagine a free thinking paradise where the rich families would be even richer because of cooperation and even more richer since they wouldn't wage costly wars against each other, so they would have even more money to finance even more great artists and their projects, maybe they would have even more reasons to build since they would have prestige wars instead of actual wars.
    It really makes you wonder what would the republic transform into after it's golden age would finnish? how would this republic have affected the protestant wars? where would the republic stand in the french revolution? would there even be a Napoleon? would they even still have sold corsica? Would it have survived in the modern day?

      @@Videntis.History Well I don't see why St.Stephen the Great would want to split up Wallachia. Stephen was interested actually more in Crimea for Principality of Theodoro that fell to the Ottomans. Stephen had an alliance with them, he married Maria Palaiologina and he supported militarily the Principality of Theodoro with about 900 Vlach soldiers. He might have been more interested in that territory more. Also I believe if a war like in the video happened, both Principality of Moldavia and Kingdom of Hungary would have supported Vlad the Third Dracula to retake his throne in Târgovişte and probably would have expanded his territory south wards like his grandfather Mircea the Elder did.
