    If your Cleanflight or Betaflight flight controller won't connect to your computer, the most likely cause is that your drivers aren't installed correctly. I'll show you how to install them correctly. I'll also show you the most common ways that people mess them up, how to tell what's gone wrong, and how to fix it. The good news is, if you think you've bricked your flight controller, you probably haven't. It's nearly impossible to brick these devices simply by flashing them incorrectly.
    The flight controller in the video is the Lumenier Lux v2. Same great layout and features as the Lux v1, but with the (superior!) 6000 gyro and an on-board SD card reader. This board was provided by GetFPV.

    I don't know if it's been said, but since project blue falcon went AWOL you are the best consolidated knowledge base we have left. thank you for putting this together, as always, your content is on point. I would argue you are one of the reasons this community grows as fast as it can.

I'm an electrical engineer and not a luddite, but I needed something like this bad. How would you find all this stuff without this video. Surely if this vanished, Betaflight wouldn't die...

    I had many instances between vcp vs bootloader failing to even be captured by USB. Days and hours trying to troubleshoot it, different USB ports, onboard vs add-in, etc. Driver install/reinstall/update. Came down to several of my usb cables that don't work for VCP OR bootloader even though the successfuly transfer data.
    Go figure.
    So, if you've done everything, install, remove, update, Zadig, etc with no joy. Try a different cable. Or try it first and save yourself some potential time and frustration. Arrrrrgggghhhh! (And that's being polite, lol)

      Fingers crossed here. I'm having what I suspect to be driver issues with a Kiss board. It will not enter dfu/bootloader mode and have tried on 3 separate PCs without pre-existing drivers. I know this video was for cleanflight, but I'm checking anything related to driver issues these days. Maybe it is the wire, because I cannot finding a conflicting driver and DFuse isn't recognizing anything.

    Joshua Bardwell Thank you so much for this video! I had no problems flashing my SPRacingF3 board with my 1st 2 builds but with this 3rd build I have an Omnibus F4 Pro V3 and I couldn’t get it to flash at all. I ended up cleaning house and deleting all the drivers installed for BF and started from scratch. I then watched this video and followed step by step and I was finally able to flash the latest firmware on my FC. I’ve been fighting this issue for 2 days now, so thank you for the help Josh! I’m finally ready to start wiring my 3rd build! I’ll be flying this weekend finally!

    Excellent explanations for the USB driver nightmare... I spent 10 hours yesterday screwing around trying to get my BeeBrain to talk with Windows 7. I finally got it to work. • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really sorry you had to go through that. There is no reason for this to be more than a 15 minute process. This is one of a few issues that I desperately wish Betaflight would do better.
      Maybe now that BF Configurator is an EXE file instead of a Chrome app we can move off of the winusb DFU driver.

Thought I bricked my Flywoo Firefly 1S baby Nano, then was able to follow your instructions here to get it in DFU and flash to the latest firmware. Saved the day phew. I have just signed up as a patreon using paypal. Keep up the great work. Do you have any videos or tips on how to enable VTX IRC Tramp, as the Video Transmitter tab in Betaflight sadly says 'Device ready No'. Man, u r god send. I've been fooling around my new F3 EVO board for 2 days to get it to connect in DFU mode for firmware flashing without any success. After your vdo, everything is done in like 5 minutes. The reason why I can't find this vdo is because you refer to LUX flight controller and I just stumble upon it while searching about VCP driver problem. My Windows7 shows the board in STM32 DFU device but no DFU in Cleanflight pull down menu for com port. All the talks about VCP driver issue never stated clearly as your VDO did, which driver you are suppose to install to get thing working.
    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

    I posted a comment several months ago about how I got around all my driver issues by going with a chromebook and using the Chrome apps. Well, I just tested with a $35 Raspberry Pi 3 and it works!! At least on the first three copters I grabbed off my wall. I tested all 17 flight controllers with my chromebook and they all worked the first time. I don't have the time or motivation to confirm that with the rasberry pi but I have a feeling that it will work just as flawlessly. I am actually on my raspberry pi 3 typing this comment right now. I will say that BLheli-32 doesn't work with the chromebook and I don't expect it to work with the raspberry pi either because it isn't supported in the chrome app. But $40 to never fight drivers again? that's your call. But it would be an easy one for me.

    IMPORTANT: possible fix!
    Try using another usb cable! Cleanflight manual says: "If you see no signs of life on your host computer when you plug in your board, check your cable with your mobile phone or some other USB device - some charging cables have only the power pins connected. These will power up the board, so the leds light up, but the host computer will not react to the device at all. You need a proper USB cable to connect your board to the Cleanflight Configurator." Worked for me!

    You do such a fantastic job of explaining this kind of stuff. By far the best at explaining this stuff. With that said, it's still hard to follow and still hit or miss. I think stuff like this is a part of this hobby and technology that still has a TON of room for improvement. I dread flashing a board. It seems like such a high percentage of times I have issues in one way or another. I just installed a Betaflight F4 and I can't get that to flash. It's kind of ridiculous that we have to jump through so many hoops to flash the latest version of BF onto a BF board! I thought I had this stuff figured out and have had no issues flashing the last several boards I have built with but again I find myself going to Joshua for guidance because even a person like myself that has been in the hobby for years still can't flash a flight controller with confidence LOL.

    This fixed an incomprehensible problem for me - why BetaFlight on my Windows PC wouldn’t connect to my FC in boot loader mode. Thank you for the detailed explanation of the problem and the resolution.
    P.S. the dfu CLI command makes the bootload process a whole lot easier

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bear in mind that BF 3.2 changed that command to the more generic, "bootloader". The actual command is "bl".

    @brusterbruster6923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    "you can just type the "dfu" command into the CLI..... ooooh yeah" . Ooooh yeah indeed!! Didn't know that. I learnt something today....

      Except now it has changed to "bl" for bootloader.

    Thanks JB, fantastico, finally my drivers now work and 3.5 is on my whoop, yeeha! You da man. Now all my Mockingbird settings are gone do I need to set up from scratch again or can I run my BF 3.2.2 Dump into CLI? I read that is not a good idea but keen to hear it from you :-) Would certainly save time, what would you do?

    Ive been trying to flash my 1st board for 2 days, this will help thx. One of the most annoying problems is finding out what board to select, I have no idea, QX65 BeeCore V2 board on whoop, others say use Omnibus, how do I know if that's correct? Having loads of problems with this, 2 of us trying we can't seem to get it to flash, just red bar failed each time. Will start fresh following your vid. One quad screams when plugged in, why is all this so difficult, crazy! Thx J.

    JB you the man thanks for all the help. Wanted to leave a tip. I run other quads for long range with mission planner my TX comes thtrough my computer using bluetooth and create a virtual com port. I couldn't get into DFU until I rebooted and I also turned my bluetooth off. Not sure if BT made a difference or not. But something that might cause some issues if using dragonlink with the virtual com port through BT. Thanks again dude

    Joshua thank you for all the knowledge sir. Ok real quick I am new to beta flight and I just want to make a few simple changes and setup my switches. So basically bind n flys is my aim. Nobody can answer this do I need the drivers installed if I am not going to be flashing. I just want basic simple setup.
