    Wow. So all the spaceship effects was just bluescreen and models of the Enterprise, Galileo, Bird of Pray and Klingon spacecraft. Those effects were impressive back in the 1960's.

      Of course. This was done before CGI.

      There was a special episode on TNG dvd , explaining how each effect improved over star trek history... For example, beaming to starship or jumping to warp speed glare effect...

    My opinion the Shuttlecraft leaving the hangerbay was better in its original effects. Looked more under control and this includes it moving through spaces as well it just looked better in the original version. Now the new effect when Spock jettisons and ignites their fuel was awesome.

      For the most part the flight motions of the older version are more realistic - less of the bouncing, insectlike motions currently trendy in flight depictions in scifi - and, by keeping trajectories to smooth arcs, give the impression of greater mass that aid in the realism (ok, I know it's fictional, but it needs to look at least somewhat plausible). Oh, and when they try to depict the visible occupants through the windows of the moving spacecraft, it just looks silly. An obvious exception to the older depiction being better is the weird shaking of the shuttlecraft when it first goes off-course after launch - it looks like it has a bad 4-cylinder with a misfire. The original jettison-and-ignite scene is quite good under the circumstances (though I agree they did a great job with the CGI version), even though it's clear they didn't have the budget to throw the planet into the scene.
      Overall, a great comparison video!

    This is an episode that clearly benefited from new visual effects. When I saw this episode as a 8 year old in the 1970s, I thought Mr. Spock was driving the shuttle recklessly for no good reason. The new effects make it clear as to what he was trying to do - signal the Enterprise to rescue them while running the risk of burning up in the planet’s atmosphere.

    For the most part the enhanced effects were unobtrusive and well done. I could nit pick on some but the fluid way the Enterprise now moves such that it isn't the same turn left, turn right is well done. Plus it doesn't have the white Lincoln Enterprises model look that you put together as a kid.

    I like the CGI effects. A lot of thought went into producing them and it enhances the experience of watching for me.

    The problem with the new CGI is it looks like it was created in a 1998 Acer computer.

    LOVE all the new effects except for the green trail @9:04 which is just a bit too CGI, I prefer when they look like something that could’ve been done back then had they had the budget.

      Agreed. There's too much green already, with the planet and the nebula. The scene needed some red or orange for the fuel trail.

    I much prefer the original effects. Part of my joy in watching this show (first timer) is seeing how they did sci fi in the 60s. The shuttle craft model looks good and I'd like to admire the technical aspect of how they made these shots without a computer, which would have required quite a lot of ingenuity. The CGI shuttle looks dated now anyway and immediately takes me out of this 60s version of the future.

    This episode benefitted the most from the remastering.

  • @mokwella

    I knew back around 2007 when I watched the remastered episodes for the first time that the cgi would probably become dated over time, but I honestly never thought the effect of time would be so extreme. The old shuttle bay sequences for example, seem to blend with the lighting and esthetic of the original cut of the show, even if they are not as technically sophisticated. In retrospective, the 2007 remastered shuttle bay shots seem both out of date (they actually take me out of the show and remind me of how the Ron Moore Battlestar Galactica show cgi looked) and they also seem to overdo it with the shuttle wiggling and floating which almost says to me "isn't it awesome what computers can do in 2007?" As a result, overall I think the original effects work better. The giant cave men still look cheesy of course (not that I am recommending a further remaster) but the production knew that at the time, which is why they are on screen so little.

    • @haines96
      @haines96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree the remastered effects are better in some ways but some shots like the wobbly shuttle look very amateurish. Seems like they did not have the budget to do a true faux-model look, but to manage the movement would have added some scale and gravity to even those effects, and been less distracting. Buts they are still better than STV effects!

    I don’t get why people get so upset over an optional remaster that they don’t have to watch. The remaster can help to introduce new fans to the show and those who dislike the remaster simply don’t have to watch it. I think the remastered effects fit within the aesthetic of the show overall. Some scenes are unnecessary and others the effects greatly improve the show. Granted, I just started Star Trek for the first time ever this week, but I kept seeing that the collection I bought was remastered so I’ve been watching TH-cam to see the original effects. Both are good. The 60’s show was definitely ahead of it’s time

    Some of the CGI effects are good, some I'm not a fan of. I don't like the uncontrolled way the CGI version of the shuttle takes off and lands in this and other episodes where it's used. And why does it wobble? They did that with the Constellation too in the Doomsday Machine. It just makes it look super fake. Also the flare when Spock ignites the fuel...it looks way too much like CGI. The old red line was better. The Murasaki Effect itself, the planet and some of the shots of the Enterprise in CGI are nice though.

  • @StarWarriorCentral
    @StarWarriorCentral 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why would they cut the shot of the flames outside the shuttlecraft windows??? That would have made the danger seem more real and imminent instead of just being like "Trust the yeoman who said 'It's getting hot.'"

    There's good and bad to both, I guess. The less ambitious the CGI, the better. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have some cheap model than absurd CGI effects.

    Could they CGI out the crewmember (lady) jumping on the floor like a 4 year old? Trek had some advanced ideas but you can always see the latent sexist mores of the day seeping through. How can I show that to my daughter?
    Thankfully, in the big picture, the message is better. But what kind of director would give this direction? Someone who thought it was a kids show? or was this actually about normal for the time?

    I just feel like that the CGI effects have aged much worst thru the years. The main problem with the original effects is the somewhat shoddy bluescreen work, i.e. the space ships looking a little see through. The CGI effects, while impressive for their time, kinda look unfinished by today standards. Throughout the sequence of the Galileo leaving the Enterprise for the first time, all I could think of was how unrendered the whole thing looked.
