That shuttlecraft wasn’t the only thing restored. The original filming model of the Enterprise was also given an overhaul. She’s now on permanent display at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC.
The way the original should have been built. The hours put into this restoration is insane, hats off to the master craftsmen that put this ship back into "space!"
Yep. I cried. I am young enough that I only ever saw this beauty in re-runs...but now I am old enough to appreciate her. And you...all of you, did something truly amazing and special almost beyond words.
OK, I'm crying. crying for happy. The last time I saw the Galileo, stepped inside it, was in 1970. It was well on its way to being wreckage. Neglected, abandoned, it broke my heart to see it. Nobody at the time understood the significance of what, to them, looked like a plywood and steel, camper or mobile home box. Over the protests of myself and several other SF fans, the "plan" was to leave it sitting outside, to be used as a "classroom" or "storage shed" at the Foundation for the Junior Blind. Then, when weather destroyed its outer hull (it was NEVER designed to 'live' out doors!!) they either discarded it, or gave it away. I never knew what happened to it until today. Yes, I'm crying. A rotted set piece returned to its original dimensions by craftsmen under the guidance of its creator and designer using all parts not turned to dust. How amazing that this was able to all come together. Thank you to everyone who is involved in such a terrific, technically difficult and meaningful effort. Kudos.
Great video! It's very clear that those folks who worked on this project had a fabulous time doing it. I hope the Galileo ends up in a permanent home where the public can see her.

OMG you guys picked the absolute perfect music from the original series and best movies the original cast and crew did, The Enterprise and shuttlecraft were to me as much a character in the series as the real live actors! It's surprising how much interest this generates. I mean, the "Galileo" is nothing more than a simple box. But, it is rather self contained. No other set in Star Trek was as compact and contained.
Clearly both the original builders and the restorers undertook their respective jobs with great pride, well done to you guys. Given that "the Enterprise is a beautiful lady and we love her" it is only right that her little friend should be afforded the same consideration. I doubt I'll ever get to see the Galileo and the original 11 foot Enterprise model in person, it is great to see them both at least on sites like this. Incidentally, how many models could have withstood 50 years of neglect and not collapsed entirely to dust? A reflection of the build quality of the original and skill of her constructors. Lastly, although James Horner didn't write any music for the original series, thanks for using him here - a great composer and gone far too soon.

The second restoration. It was previously restored in 1986 and displayed at the 20th anniversary of Star Trek convention at the Disneyland hotel (I have many pictures of it). It was sold about 1993 to someone in Ohio who left it outside all year round at the mercy of the hard northern winters, which almost destroyed it so that in 2012 they had to restore it all over again. Had it been properly stored in a warehouse it would not have been in such poor condition.
Yes! I remember on the 20th anniversary of Star Trek, flipping through a magazine they had a big article on the Galileo restoration. James Doohan was there at the end when it was finished. It looked like quite an emotional moment. Glad to see someone else remembers this!🖖
This reminds me of my 350 year old Knife, It has been restored too . Over the years the knife had its handle replaced & sometime in its 350 year life it has had the blade replaced as well , Though it looks in remarkable condition considering its awesome age.
Great job on the restoration; but HOLY CRAP, looks like safety totally went out the window! Where's the safety glasses. I used to be a shipfitter and if the safety inspectors came by and saw this, they would have fit and shut the job down!
It's nice to see fine craftsmen at work. They truly did an excellent job! I love seeing all their tools. I am intrigued at the "Time Capsule" notation at 06:49 - "Attention Time Capsule enclosed (arrow) 12" over inside impulse deck sealed 9-13-92 K+W" It's in all caps but I thought it would be too annoying to repeat that here. I wonder what that is all about!
I was shocked to see the way it looked when they first brought it in the shop; was it left out in the elements to rot? I grew up watching STOS and have fond memories of when the crew had to take the shuttle to rescue those crazy space hippies on the planet Eden. Good times, great memories, and there never has been anything like it since.
+Chris Haywood There's not much to see inside the thing other than structural wood and steel framing. The filming interior was a separate set (which couldn't possibly have fit inside the exterior mockup).
The entire outer skin was rotted away and had to be rebuilt from scratch. However, the structural steel frame, the sheet metal nacelles, and the pylons are all original. I'd venture to guess that the Galileo is still more than 50 percent original by weight.
From what I remember, the steel frame was just about the ONLY part that would be considered salvageable. If the nacelles are original, then yes, the metal parts are all that is left of the original. On the other hand, the original components were plywood and styrofoam, plastic and paint. When I stepped into it, all the original components were there. The floor was sheets of plywood, laid over the steel beams, and then covered with short 'industrial' grey carpeting. The chairs had been torn off their mountings... actually the mountings had been torn from the flooring and the chairs were lying on their sides. We tried lifting one and replacing it on its position on the floor (from the marks in the carpeting) but it fell over. Basically, had they not been bolted down, the chairs would not have stood on their own. IF the chairs were still with the shuttle when it was found, their shafts would have been re-usable. The Fiberglas seats, PERHAPS. But the shuttlecraft prop was, even as early on as 1970, beginning to warp and rot! it was never built to really LAST, and that is why the reconstruction had to be so complete. The original wood was just too warped, rotted and the paint far too faded and dilapidated to re-use.
@@sylvisterling8782 Were there any chairs inside the shuttle mockup? The interior used for filming was a separate set which obviously couldn't fit inside the shuttle. The "full-sized" Galileo didn't even have standing headroom.
@@scotpens Actually there were chairs in the shuttle I saw, BUT all of them had been taken from their positions, unbolted and were lying on the floor. They DID have mountings in the floor, but these were just simple bolts, through a baseplate and through the plywood and carpeting over the plywood. Without the bolts, the chairs were top heavy, their bases too narrow and small, and they would just topple over. I *might* debate the 'no standing room' aspect of the shuttlecraft, since when I walked inside it, I was standing perfectly straight, with NO problems... but then I am 5'1"! So what standing room is for me may not be standing room for others.
+Jvillebdks87 The engine nacelles, wings and pylons are original, as is the structural steel frame. Basically the entire outer skin was completely deteriorated and had to be rebuilt. It's a Ship of Theseus paradox.
I guess the best way to describe it is by the percentage of remaining parts. It's a reproduction mixed with a restoration. Of course when you're talking about vehicles it's a matter of title, so this would inherit the title of the original.
And if people payed attention to the video some parts were just too far gone but the whole original frame was 80% intact from what was shown. They did not rebuild it,it was restored. Done this many times with old cars, sometimes certain things are just not saveable. Again great job everyone as it is alive again which is better then it rotting away.
Oh man. I thought for sure this prop must be a clapboard falsehood that'd fall apart on a hard sneeze, or even painted into the set. I'm happy to know it had a proper build. I'm also mystified they didn't use it a whole lot more, as nice as it is.
The interior wouldn't actually fit inside. The Galileo was built to something like 75% scale. Probably because of the budget. The interior set was a separate set from the large scale mockup.
Really they should have restored the original panels. It's like restoring a car by replacing all the external bodywork. Same shape but not what was seen on screen. Triggers broom.
I have a question. What is the actual color of the shuttle? In some scenes on the TV show it looks bright white,in others it looks like a light shade of grey. In the original Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual it's two-tone, with "Platinum" for the upper half and Grey for the bottom half, based on the color chips included in the book. What colors did you use for the restoration?
Wow, they did a real beautiful job! It had to be a total labor of love and I imagine have all these craftspeople working with them doing the bodywork and painting and forming must have been done by them primarily for love of it. Its not like this can provide much of a return on an investment, unless the return is the pride on doing it. Otherwise, the shuttle would have eventually rotted away in some crap yard somewhere. I always believed that the design of the shuttle also influenced early mini vans, like the Dodge Caravan or Ford Windstar etc, with their slanted windshield etc.
@@darthkurland True. But i think they have moved beyond that. The prime timeline no longer uses that look in the TOS time period....we will have a new TOS time period soon and the shuttle's will not look like that. I guess they could throw it in the background as an Easter egg...

So what standing room is for me may not be standing room for others.
nice job guys took me back to my childhood
Nice restoration. Congratulations
Amazing work. And one of the gentleman (light blue shirt at the end) reminds me of a young Gene Roddenberry.
A shuttlecraft I cherish. Good work and my thanks to all involved.
Wow... Just beautiful!!! Well done...
Bravo and thank you. She looks amazing.
Wonder what they did with the interior ...
I always liked the shuttle craft. :) Great Job it looks perfect!
Were any of the original parts used besides the frame or is the original ship in the the trash ?
+Jvillebdks87
The engine nacelles, wings and pylons are original, as is the structural steel frame.
That might be true if the Galileo were a real vehicle like a car or a boat. But it's FAKE vehicle made for a TV show!
@@writerpatrick This hybrid replica/restoration is all that survives of the original studio prop.
They went to the right guys for this job. Boat builders have the experience and tools to get the job done correctly. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
wow , the only thing missing is custom Recaro seats interior landing gear looks awesome as well -good job guys !!!!!
Great work!! Thank you for sharing!!
Fantastic restoration job. I suspect one or two of those older boys honed their skills on the construction of the titanic, and put to good use here 😁!
Beyond awesome, nice work guys.
When are they doing the interior?
I was curious about that myself. They could get the details from "Metamorphosis" and "The Immunity Syndrome" or "The Galileo 7"
The interior wouldn't actually fit inside. The Galileo was built to something like 75% scale. Probably because of the budget. The interior set was a separate set from the large scale mockup.
@@outsider238It would not but they did have chairs put in there when they did the exterior shots and the door was open..
If you replace all the wood, fiberglass, interior, etc. Is it still the same Galileo?
lucas deaver More or less!
Ahhh the age old philosophy question.😂 Not really. Looks like most of it was replaced.
I want to be clear. I DO appreciate the work. Its nice to see a full fledged Galileo so lovingly treated.
@@lucasdeaver9192 True..
Looks like a lot of hard work and just as much fun
Really enjoyed this video! Awesome job! Thanks for sharing! 😃👍
Lovely work, where did the original panels go? Or is the time capsule element a big hint?
Really they should have restored the original panels. It's like restoring a car by replacing all the external bodywork. Same shape but not what was seen on screen. Triggers broom.
@@lepterfirefallI think the original panels were ditched during the first restoration....so they were lost long ago..
Amazing stuff. My favorite ship from Star Trek.
What an excellent job!! You guys should be proud.
Where is this now? It should be in the Smithsonian along with the model of the enterprise. Awesome job!
Excellent job & video too!
Thanks so much!!! I want one to live in from time to time...!! Camping...Halliween fun.
Now that she’s been restored, do you think that CBS might want to use her again for any future “Star Trek” productions?
If so, would you allow it?
Why?
@@Anth230 just a thought. If they need that type of craft again, it would certainly help to know that the original is back in shape.
@@darthkurland True. But i think they have moved beyond that. The prime timeline no longer uses that look in the TOS time period....we will have a new TOS time period soon and the shuttle's will not look like that. I guess they could throw it in the background as an Easter egg...
@@Anth230 that’s sort of what I was thinking of. They did feature one taking off in the background of Starfleet HQ in the Director’s Edition of TMP.
Looks just like my Toyota minivan. God I miss that thing! Curse you Grinch!
what a GREAT job you did!
I need more info as to how this came about. Where was it and how did it get there? How was it found? Is this the actual Galileo used in the show?
Great Job Adam!
Ready for an endless series of sci fi conventions!
Bully wow nice cleanup and fixed up good job guys!!
probably better now than it ever was .
where was it sitting all these years?
