    A note from another old Trekkie. I want to express my deepest thanks to you all for restoring a part of my youth. The owners picked the right shop for the job. I'm just short of calling myself a master carpenter (does anyone ever fully learn the trade?). I've worked on many restoration jobs and have many in both state and national registries and think that you did an excellent job. "Live long and prosper!"

      That shuttlecraft wasn’t the only thing restored. The original filming model of the Enterprise was also given an overhaul. She’s now on permanent display at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC.

    OK, I'm crying. crying for happy. The last time I saw the Galileo, stepped inside it, was in 1970. It was well on its way to being wreckage. Neglected, abandoned, it broke my heart to see it. Nobody at the time understood the significance of what, to them, looked like a plywood and steel, camper or mobile home box. Over the protests of myself and several other SF fans, the "plan" was to leave it sitting outside, to be used as a "classroom" or "storage shed" at the Foundation for the Junior Blind. Then, when weather destroyed its outer hull (it was NEVER designed to 'live' out doors!!) they either discarded it, or gave it away. I never knew what happened to it until today. Yes, I'm crying. Tears of GRATITUDE!

    I saw this Histoic Relec at a Shuttle-Con Star Trek Convention in COLUMBUS , I beleive , I took a dozen pics of its pre- restoration shape. Yeah it was sad but salvagable. STNG Gates ( Dr.Crusher) was guest at the Con. I was in awe of it's raw beauty. It was displayed outside to no fanfare. Nobody to really get official information so I assumed it was yet to be sold or adopted etc. For years at the dawn of the internet I searched for Imformation . Thanks to this Website I've gotten a Time Capsule into this Historic Icon. Thank You so much..I Live in Toledo and sadly had lost my brother who 's passed away a couple years ago .in San Antonio. It was on my bucket list to visit him and later Trek to Houston to see this restored Marvel., bur alas.😔 I was a wee lad of 10 years young. when STOS premired and have followed it since in all its incarnations. Now at Retirement age from many occupations to say the least as a professional Artist, I hope to VISIT the Houston Space Center as well as the "restored" Mission Control and the rest of the facilities and displays. By the way..Im currious about the Interior of the Shuttlecraft. I know it was a separate set piece from t he original but, perhaps you could showcase a separate video of that if it at all relates to this particular restoration. .Thank You so much for posting this True Star Trek,. Live Long and Prosper!🖖 Go Artimas! Back to The Moon...onto Mars!!!

    Adam, I know Hans very well, since 1974. I have to tip my hat to him on this project. Wish I knew, would have loved to see the shuttle craft, but looks like he replaced 90% of it. In wood boat restoration its called a "comprehensive paint job", you start scraping the paint on the outside until you reach the inside, then replace everything in between.

  • @Jimvanhise
    @Jimvanhise 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The second restoration. It was previously restored in 1986 and displayed at the 20th anniversary of Star Trek convention at the Disneyland hotel (I have many pictures of it). It was sold about 1993 to someone in Ohio who left it outside all year round at the mercy of the hard northern winters, which almost destroyed it so that in 2012 they had to restore it all over again. Had it been properly stored in a warehouse it would not have been in such poor condition.

Done this many times with old cars,sometimes certain things are just not saveable. Again great job everyone as it is alive again which is better then it rotting away.

    Clearly both the original builders and the restorers undertook their respective jobs with great pride, well done to you guys. Given that "the Enterprise is a beautiful lady and we love her" it is only right that her little friend should be afforded the same consideration. I doubt I'll ever get to see the Galileo and the original 11 foot Enterprise model in person, it is great to see them both at least on sites like this. Incidentally, how many models could have withstood 50 years of neglect and not collapsed entirely to dust? A reflection of the build quality of the original and skill of her constructors. Lastly, although James Horner didn't write any music for the original series, thanks for using him here - a great composer and gone far too soon.

    Wow, they did a real beautiful job! It had to be a total labor of love and I imagine have all these craftspeople working with them doing the bodywork and painting and forming must have been done by them primarily for love of it. Its not like this can provide much of a return on an investment, unless the return is the pride on doing it. Otherwise, the shuttle would have eventually rotted away in some crap yard somewhere. I always believed that the design of the shuttle also influenced early mini vans, like the Dodge Caravan or Ford Windstar etc, with their slanted windshield etc.

    The shuttle is not "real life size", two reasons, first the budget, it was given for free to the studio, and it would have be to big to fit in the set. The interior was a second built with removable walls. If you watch the series you will see that the interior is much bigger , the actors have lots of space overhead! We as fans come to cherish these props as they, at least to us, are a tangible product that connect us to a make-believe world. Unlike the studios who create them, their only goal is to use them to tell a story. Once that story is done, so is the prop. I'm saddened at every Universal Studios back lot tour as many of the props from many of my favorite movies sit there to rust and bake.

    Only Trekkies could love the worlds largest Star Trek prop. To the network, after the show was cancelled, this was probably the worlds largest white elephant....to be gotten rid of as fast as possible. Don't get me wrong, I love it.

    How much of the original structure is still present? It looks almost as if it was completely rebuilt.

    • @scotpens
      @scotpens 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The entire outer skin was rotted away and had to be rebuilt from scratch. However, the structural steel frame, the sheet metal nacelles, and the pylons are all original. I'd venture to guess that the Galileo is still more than 50 percent original by weight.

      I wonder what the fine line is between Restoration and Rebuild. On this occasion, unfortunately, the Ship of Theseus comes to mind (Triggers Broom).

      @sylvisterling8782 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From what I remember, the steel frame was just about the ONLY part that would be considered salvageable. If the nacelles are original, then yes, the metal parts are all that is left of the original. On the other hand, the original components were plywood and styrofoam, plastic and paint. When I stepped into it, all the original components were there. The floor was sheets of plywood, laid over the steel beams, and then covered with short 'industrial' grey carpeting. The chairs had been torn off their mountings... actually the mountings had been torn from the flooring and the chairs were lying on their sides. We tried lifting one and replacing it on its position on the floor (from the marks in the carpeting) but it fell over. Basically, had they not been bolted down, the chairs would not have stood on their own. IF the chairs were still with the shuttle when it was found, their shafts would have been re-usable. The Fiberglas seats, PERHAPS. But the shuttlecraft prop was, even as early on as 1970, beginning to warp and rot! it was never built to really LAST, and that is why the reconstruction had to be so complete. The original wood was just too warped, rotted and the paint far too faded and dilapidated to re-use.

      @@sylvisterling8782 Were there any chairs inside the shuttle mockup? The interior used for filming was a separate set which obviously couldn't fit inside the shuttle. The "full-sized" Galileo didn't even have standing headroom.

    • @sylvisterling8782
      @sylvisterling8782 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@scotpens Actually there were chairs in the shuttle I saw, BUT all of them had been taken from their positions, unbolted and were lying on the floor. They DID have mountings in the floor, but these were just simple bolts, through a baseplate and through the plywood and carpeting over the plywood. Without the bolts, the chairs were top heavy, their bases too narrow and small, and they would just topple over.
      I *might* debate the 'no standing room' aspect of the shuttlecraft, since when I walked inside it, I was standing perfectly straight, with NO problems... but then I am 5'1"! So what standing room is for me may not be standing room for others.

    Most of the original parts were removed and discarded. So by definition they didn't restore it. They rebuilt it.
    Even though it has a genuine causal connection to the original they could have done much more to save the original historical material and not just the idea of it.
    (This is like finding an authentic jacket worn by Shakespeare. But since it's ragged you only keep the buttons and sow them onto a replica jacket. Then you put it on display in a museum and throw the real fabric away.)

      It looked to me that they mainly kept the metal frame, with some repairs. The wood was too rotten to reuse.

    • @DeadAbeVigoda
      @DeadAbeVigoda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Maybe they should have built a replica and kept the decrepit original "on ice" for historic value.

    • @CaseAgainstFaith1
      @CaseAgainstFaith1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is the way that cars are restored. The frame is kept and the body is replaced as necessary. Nobody wants to go see rotten wood. If it sits "on ice" it might as well be thrown away.
