    The most amazing thing is how you are just in love with photography, thinking about the picture first and loving the process and outcome no matter what gear you are using. Very inspiring thinking, this is something we should all cherish. It's the picture that truly matters.

    These entry level cameras seem to always have amazing, professional level sensors in them (even if not the latest generation). You lose out on autofocus performance, frame rate, buffer depth, video capabilities, etc, weather sealing, etc. But, if you don't really care about any of that and your primary concern is professional image quality (as is the case with 99% of people, whether they realize it or not), these entry level cameras are actually fantastic. I've actually read about several professional photographers (real professionals, not TH-cam "professionals") who primarily use entry level cameras simply because they are so cheap (to purchase initially or to replace if they get damaged or stolen) and still have phenomenal image quality.

    I bought one as a companion for my trusty 80d. It is much lighter, has a great grip - much better than many mirrorless, has focus peaking in liveview, even clean HDMI out WITH autofocus (dual Pixel). Great touchscreen as well, paired with the best (imho) usability of the touchscreen besides panasonic. Even my wife likes it a lot, and ususally she never touches DSLRs because of the bulkyness. I love this little gem:)

    Indeed all you are doing is moving forward the understanding that it is FAR more the person behind the camera then the camera itself. Our tools assist our connection in creativity. But that doesn't mean one can't produce superb imagery with a camera that is NOT "State Of The Art". I'm currently using a Sony RX10MkIV after having owned many pro DSLR's over the last 20 years as a professional. But now finding that flexibility gives me MORE power than the shear specs.

    I have an SL1 and it is great for learning. But after 3 years I start to think about something with better low light performance and better AF. Kit lens is good but wide open has some flaws. So, if you want to travel, learn and enjoy SL3 is great even for video, except for 1 thing: Canon removed the central pin in the flash shoe. I learnt a lot using cheap external flashes on camera and off camera and now you can only use Canon flashes, some of them with considerable pricetag.
    If you want to learn flash photography on a budget, this camera is not for you.

    One caution: This camera doesnt have a center contact in the hot shoe. So no compatibility with most studio flash triggers (and porties as well) unless the triggers have specific Canon contacts. The Canon M50 (has the center contact) is a much better value at the same price.

      @earthless8781 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dani_da_vision Neither of those. They are flawed for professional use. I would go for the (now) similar priced 77d. Great AF from the optical viewfinder, more manual control, in live view you will only miss the eye detection but still have face tracking, but with the 45 cross point AF in the optical view finder I think that you would rarely use it. The m50 is tempting but the ergonomics is far from good and with ef-s lenses is really unbalanced. Battery life ridicolous. The SL3 is a deliberately missed opportunity, it's 9 point AF makes the viewfinder inusable for professional works, you still have the (great, with great AF) live view but personally I like shooting from the viewfinder. Moreover the flash compatibility, the 24fps missing in the video, I just not undestand the Canon choice.

  • @momchilyordanov8190
    @momchilyordanov8190 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would rate them as: Most important is whether the subject is impressive. Beautiful, dramatic, important, interesting, carrying an emotion or provoking contemplation, regardless of being a natural scene, a person, a location, a moment of history, an event etc... Second most important is the ability of the photographer. To squeeze the maximum of that subject. Third most important, closely related to the previous, are some technical aspects of the picture, like proper exposure, composition, timing and additional editing. Fourth most important is the gear used. And for some reason, probably 99% of the attention goes into the 4th most important...

    @danieldougan269 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The real advantages of a more expensive camera are the autofocus system and the burst rate. It makes it much easier to track moving subjects and capture the right moment.
    For landscapes, this is far less important. But it's crucial for sports and wildlife or even if you're trying to track kids or pets.
    Also, for a beginner especially (but also for everyone else), I would recommend buying a mirrorless camera instead. With the electronic viewfinder, you can preview your exposure, and that's critical. Sure, you can do that off the back screen with a DSLR, but you can't do it when the camera is up to your eye.
    Entry-level telephoto and prime lenses are cheap, so I would recommend that every beginner at least have at least two lenses and probably three (a portrait prime). They don't have to be fancy, but there's very little reason to buy an interchangeable lens camera if you only have one slow kit zoom lens.
    Buy used to save money!

    For landscape this camera could be enough, when you shoot F8 up. For portraits or wildlife not so much. This camera do not have lens micro adjustment setting, so if it's off a bit with focus with the lens you got, you gonna have soft pictures at lower apertures :(. I got 200D and it was really hard to get spot on focus with 1.8 or 2.8 lens with it. But with apertures 7.1 up it was even capturing really good panning shots of fast moving cars, although hit ratio was not that good. Mirrorless is an answer here, cause in most cases you won't need any micro adjustments because of how focus is gathered in mirrorless vs dslrs.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I once had a 1200D, vastly inferior to your 200D and I never had focusing issues with moving subjects with lenses wide open. The only lens I've ever owned which needed micro AF adjustments was a Tamron 18-400mm on an 80D. I've had Canon for over 30yrs and none of my Canon lenses have had AF issues.

    • @DentargPL
      @DentargPL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cooloox It depends of the quality of mirror attachement (Gerald Undone explains it in one of his videos). I guess my copy of the camera got focus or mine mirror slightly off. Now I switched to Sony A6400 and with the same cheap canon lens on MC-11 focus is spot on in most of the photos taken. You can adjust the mirror with the adjust screw, but for me it was to complicated thing to do. Professionals can do it, but it costs additional money and result may vary for different lenses. I'm not saying 200D is a bad camera. I was using it for almost a year and got some amazing photos with it (even wildlife). But with 9 point of AF it's sometime really hard to shoot small bird. Sure you can do MF, but MF on EVF (A6400 for example) is much easier because of MF assistants (either peeking or MF zoom). So as Nigel said in one of his videos cheap camera could be enough, but you have to know what you gonna shot, not to be disappointed with the results. Oh and that crippled hotshoe on 250D is really bad move of Canon.

    • @blackjohnny0

      Lol. For portraits its enought. Even for fashion or beauty. I would prefer something better for weddings etc., because of AF.

    • @darlingtoncd
      @darlingtoncd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree!
      I use 600d(x2) + wireless flashes (studio and event work)...good when staying aware of focus issues. The lack of micro adjusting is a big issue for other types of use...macro/semi-macro and telephoto, I have had a lot of experience of these issues, and they are real. I have tested mine and both of them front focus! If someone doesn't experience them they may have a good copy where the adjustment is spot on but on the other hand, they may not be a pixel peeper (as I am). Over the years people have referenced this problem but they won't get a reference to lack of micro adjustment. On occasions, I will have to use my Samsung NX11 (mirrorless) which is spot on for macro work and with good live view performance, the 600d can't generally be used in live view (2 to 4 seconds to focus...no dual pixel). Pros and cons but never rely on one review!
      The 200d, 250d can be considered as a mirrorless with an optical viewfinder.
      Sub £1000 (variable) DSLRs cannot be micro-adjusted, this is a lot of money to invest in a camera and possible expensive glass. Canons dual pixel is very good so beginners need to be aware that if they like to use live view, make sure it has dual pixel!
      I won't upgrade my cameras until they pack in but keeping up with the way technology is progressing is vital. Lots of great photographers are invested and experienced in the gear they have and if it's working for them...great but in 2019 for a new photographer moving into photography they need to be aware of the pro photographer who hasn't moved with the times', even this photographer has moved into mirrorless (Nikon Z7).

    • @Noeman2009
      @Noeman2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. The SL3 has no weather sealing, a primitive autofocus system through the viewfinder, and a slow burst rate. It will really let you down with moving subjects.
      For the same money, you're much better off getting a gently used camera with better features. May I recommend the original Olympus OM-D E-M1 with 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 II lens? You can find that camera used for very little money (even with very few shutter variations), and it's extremely powerful. The only thing I don't like about my E-M1 is the video quality, but it's still usable for beginners.
      If you must have APS-C, the Sony a6000 is a better choice than the SL3 even though it doesn't have weather sealing either. And, if you must have Canon, try the EOS M5 or M50.

    It is a simpler bodies canon, with less functionality, so easier on the beginner. And yet a lot further and more capable then the old photographers had. So, yeah they kinda work and are fine.
    Now, don't get me wrong, I do like the modern additions we have. Better, quicker focus, easier handling, extra tools... as long as the camera is seen as a tool all is fine. But in the end, it is about getting a picture, a moment caught in time, and again, there are no bad sensors anymore. Some are a bit better than others, but even the most simple of sensors is still pretty darn good by old standards. And for that price, it is a good begin, right? Leaves you more money for some decent lenses.

      Canon still makes one sensor that is definitely bad. The one in the 6D II and EOS RP is based on 7 year old tech. Its performance is dismal:
      www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%206D%20Mark%20II,Canon%20EOS%20RP,Sony%20ILCE-7M3
      The skies would be far more clipped in the images in the video than with just the SL3, which significantly outperforms the 6DII/EOS RP sensor at base ISO, making it the superior landscape camera:

    I agree with the sentiment that a camera is a a tool and it shouldn't hold you back, that being said, would it be possible to have these videos in 4K, youtube compression is wrecking havoc on all the greenery shots and photos in 1080p.

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting the TH-cam algorithms will now only allow 4K if your screen and likely your graphics card too are able to reproduce it. I have a "decent" monitor and a "decent" graphics card but nothing above 1080 60p shows on the YT quality list. It used to and I would try it but I used to get lots of random pixelization so had to switch back to 1080. An upgrade is on the list but expensive to get both at the same time. I will try a card first.

    For that price I would get a used 5d mark ii with a 17-40mm, since that lens sell for like 350 used and the 5d mark ii its like 450 used. But the thing is get a camera and learn how to shoot, get better, craft your skills and start editing them. After that you might get a new lens, and the quality of the lens is what makes the image good or bad, not that much the sensor soo invest in good lens and dont buy many cheap lens but buy one good lens. Thats my advice. And really nice video! I would like to see you guys using older gear with older lens to show peole that they can get great images with used cheap gear and they dont need to pay that much gor a good combo.

      To be honest, i wouldnt do that anymore. the sensor on the 250D is much better than the 5DII sensor. especially when it comes to dynamic range.
      Also for video its much more usable with the dualpixel AF and eye AF.

    I've had a 5Dmkiii and a 50D and the 250D has beat them both small light and with Digic8 and full 4k HD eyeA/f and the amazing 1000+ shot count. The 5D's not been out once since I've owned it fantastic little camera much more than a newbie unit it's almost the same as the new 850D at a fraction of the price. For once a real bargain from Canon

    Yes, compared to digital cameras from 10 years ago this far exceeds in every department. But new high value kit makes it easier, I think that is the point now, the quality difference is minimal or can be worked around....Thanks

    The sunset shots definitely show what a better camera could get you. The sky wouldn't have been clipped into the middle of the image. There would instead be full cloud detail there, as the off-screen sun is the true clipping point. Any recent APS-C from Nikon, Pentax, or Sony (and maybe Fuji) would have been able to fix that, along with any recent FF except the EOS RP or 6D II.

    • @MikedieONE
      @MikedieONE 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats kinda nonsense. the 250D sensor is basically the 80D sensor. which also has really good dynamic range. very similar to the Sony A6500 for example.
      Even the predecessor the 200D had pretty good DR already. There is not really difference anymore between the APS-C canon cameras and other brands.

    Hi Nigel, Best Wishes for 2021 ! Thanks for that review, I'm owner of a 250D and a 100D , I've always ben impressed by the quality of their 18-55 kit lenses...and quite upset of the 50mm1.8, so bland and missing contrast... I'm also using a 24mm 2.8 which is my favorite street photo lens. You can see my BnW work on Insta: christian_henry.poli

    For what you are shooting the 250D sensor is indeed good enough. However, showing us the results of a $100 kit lens and saying it is fantastic is highly misleading even for a gent whose every other word uttered is a "superlative." Are you saying that the results of the 250D with high quality glass would be the same or would such be incredibly fantastic times ten!

    • @MikedieONE
      @MikedieONE 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on what you looking for. as a landscape camera you are right. but as a beginners camera, i wouldnt put a D700 in the hands of a beginner. the 250D is super easy to use. especially with the dual pixel touch AF, Super intuitive menu, Wifi funktions for your smartphone and so on.

    • @Moonrakerd
      @Moonrakerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They Caged Non has a different approach to controls(fuji or leica), the lens has bokeh etc, this is all menu camera, there is nothing in it thats done for a photographer, its 100% marketed, its not allowed to be good but can be decent, its not allowed to be comfortable or well thought out as it will rival more expensive cameras..

    • @Moonrakerd
      @Moonrakerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @They Caged Non well, its nice that you are happy with your camera, many people are, but imagine you are doing a review of a camera that havent changed since the invention of 300d, so if you done 1 review of a camera like that, youve done them all, thats where my comment comes from, and thats why we see a pretty video with sceneries instead of a technical review

    • @Moonrakerd
      @Moonrakerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @They Caged Non well I think it depends on a person you are recommending to, I wouldnt recommend a d750 but I would recommend a 6d mk1 with a cheap youngnuo 50mm lens, but for someone that most probably will never buy a second lens I would recommend to go mirrorless - olympus m10 mk3 for example or a sony rx1 if rich ;]
