Dattie Do - The Tune I Wrote (live)

I wrote “The Tune I Wrote” back in 2018, with lyrics in collaboration with Brandon Haygood, when I just started out singing professionally. This song is filled with my memories of my own personal experience with love when I was younger. Though it didn’t quite happen, but it was beautiful. Or maybe it was beautiful because it didn’t happen. I don’t know! Then, a few months ago, I decided to write an opening verse for the song and it was interesting looking at how I felt about love 5 years ago and how I do 5 years later. Not much has changed, I have to admit.
This time, it’s a bit different than I normally do as I decided to release its live version where I performed this song with my fellas in my small and intimate live session called “The Unplugged Session”, a few months ago, at Long Waits Jazz Club, Hanoi.
It was a crazy time actually! My Unplugged Session had to be rescheduled 2 times due to the super typhoon Yagi. Everything was wrecked! Flooding and fallen trees and houses everywhere… It was really a disaster, and I had never seen anything like that in my life. I’d already thought we’d have to move the session indefinitely as our schedules were full until the end of the year. But thankfully, we finally managed to make it happen as the typhoon passed.
We didn’t have a chance to rehearse that day due to rescheduling multiple times, not even a soundcheck as far as I remember. I was super nervous before getting up on the stage. But once I started singing, somehow it made me feel so much better and I started to gradually forget about the stage fright. It was a magical night although I did mess up a lot on the stage. But somehow, to be honest, it was all so light and happy. I guess it’s the music behind all those!

I’m thankful to all of my friends who helped me make this happen. This was a start, a process of trial and error as we have been figuring out what works and what doesn’t, and we’re actually doing a lot more live recordings of both my originals and jazz standards in 2025 so please stay tuned !
