Laufey: Tiny Desk Concert

"I grew up playing classical music and it's so special to get to play my songs almost in this chamber-like setting," Laufey says in her performance. Accompanied by a string quartet, the singer-songwriter's modern jazz-pop love songs soared at the Tiny Desk, the intimacy of our little corner only heightened its impact.
Laufey's music undeniably bridges the gap between jazz and younger, mainstream audiences coming to the genre. Her sophomore album, Bewitched, broke Spotify's all-time streaming record for a jazz debut ever in the platform's history and resulted in her first Grammy nomination. She opens the set with "From The Start," a bouncy, whimsical tune about unrequited love with a friend, connecting Chet Baker-like scats with charming and playful lyrics. Taking a more melancholic turn into 2021's "Let You Break My Heart Again" and "Promise," her velvety vocals rich with vulnerability dance elegantly with the strings, creating a symphony of emotions. Laufey concludes the set with "California and Me," which she explains was heavily influenced by her receiving her first baby grand and compositions by Liszt and Chopin. This mesmerizing performance is a captivating testament to the power of collaboration and music's ability to evoke raw, unfiltered emotion.

I’m 70, and grew up hearing music in a time when it was easy to find original songs, often written by the artists that sang them, that I found enjoyable in many ways:
    Lyrics telling a relatable story
    Melodies impossible to forget
Harmonies, rythyms, and music riffs that conveyed or sustained the emotion
    Many such songs. Every year.
But for the last 30 or so years, few popular songs have been even close.
Hence when you tube recommended this new popular artists’ video to me, I couldn't have been more skeptical.
    But I was pleasantly surprised.
Not only does Laufey sing and play as well many of those I remember, she can also write original songs that I find just as enjoyable as those written 60+ years ago.

I dont think ive ever felt so deeply about anything in my life. I know almost every song of hers by heart. Its as if her music gave me something ive been searching for most of my life. Her nods to composers/older songwriters are put through her own unique creative voice (and her actual singing voice!) in a way that’s hard to find-what could be pastiche, derivative or archaic is just another very worthy addition to a bigger canon of well measures pieces. One time I was scrolling on Tiktok and I heard a cover of cheek to cheek (it was Laufey) and I loved it so I searched it up on TH-cam and I feel in love with Ella Fitzgerald and I found out that I really liked jazz. I forgot about the girl who posted the video then one day my sister played a song called “Street to Street” and I really liked it and low and behold it was the same singer that introduced me to jazz. Ever since then I’ve listened to every song that Laufey has made. She has a wonderful voice, poetic lyrics, and beautiful songs. Overall she’s an amazing performer and musician. Live Laugh Laufey ❤️

there's something so ethereal about her music, her singing voice being so raspy and classy, there's such a nostalgic feeling. everyone in this is so talented.

I'm an old one, who along with other gray-haired people so love Laufey. When I was a young college student in the late 1960s, I would sit at my dorm desk late at night studying while my small radio played music like tbat.

she’s such a good performer, her vocal control, her guitar playing , and the band/quartet are so tight too. wished there were more trained musicians in this realm of mainstream.

I really appreciate how Tiny Desk allows us to experience these songs we love in a completely different way. Laufey doesn't really get to showcase her accompanying herself much either! Her piano skills are really impressive, and in combination with the strings it becomes something truly beautiful.
