  • A video primer on pharmacodynamics to enable medical students to understand the basic terminology and be able to interpret receptor binding and dose response curves.
However, if you want to learn just the basic terminology and concepts of pharmacodynamics, without interpretation of drug binding/response curves, see my video 'Pharmacodynamics for Nursing Students'

Sir,plz explain the difference between drug selectivity and specificity

    • @WilliamKLim

Hi Poonam. Specificity is more absolute than selectivity! For example, muscarine is specific for muscarinic cholinergic receptors. It can't activate nicotinic cholinergic receptors. And vice versa for nicotine - it's specific for nicotinic cholinergic receptors only. In contrast, selectivity indicates a preference, but it's not absolute. For example, cardioselective beta blockers preferentially block beta1 receptors. Non-cardioselective beta blockers can also block beta2 receptors in the lungs, causing respiratory side effects. But if you give very high doses of cardioselective beta blockers, they will begin to block beta2 receptors too, like the non-cardioselective beta blockers! So cardioselective drugs has selectivity (but not specificity) for beta1 receptors.

*Excellent lecture! Opioid receptor example TRAMADOL. My case: TKA or TKR Total Knee Replacement. Revision operation 2018. Now in recovery with pain. Here in Thailand, Oxycodone, OxyContin “Hillbilly Heroin” only for cancer patients. TRAMADOL (weak opioid) is good enough. Also for my Mother in law and her arthritis. My recommendation not more than 50 mg per day with strong coffee no sugar! Bangkok Johnnie CarSanook Media THAILAND*

Yes, I have included tramadol and oxycodone in my notes for students. Tramadol and its metabolite has a relatively lower affinity for the opioid receptor but it also works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline. www.who.int/medicines/areas/quality_safety/6_1_Update.pdf
