    A nice refresher for me - I got lazy with the GPS tools and needed this to remind me of the satisfaction of navigating with radio aids like we used to in the sims. Its even more fun above or in the clouds. Thanks.

    Great tutorial, and something I have been wanting to learn more about! I'll be referencing this tutorial in the future. Thanks!

    The release of the JU 52 finally made me start learning about VOR & etc., and I love it. It’s a very engaging and gratifying way of navigating imo.

    Great stuff !! Really adds to the sim , flying " old skool " !! Sometimes flying GPS point A to B can get a bit boring in the sim .

    I have just purchased the PMDG DC-6. It’s a bit of a beast to fly, and has a very steep learning curve. But I just love the whole ethos of “ analogue “ in that aircraft. The dials, engine noise, everything. So thank you for this tutorial AvAngel, it’s good to go back to basics and use the knowledge gained and apply this to flying via radio beacons instead of the ubiquitous GPS. Many thanks !.

      @@AvAngel On topic: Good video, thank you! You turned on the Nav1 audio and heard the Morse ID; have you encountered any issues in MSFS not hearing audio through Nav1 at all?

    The feeling of accomplishment I had in flying from a white line in a field of green to another white line in a field of green hundreds of miles away in MSFS 3.0 using VOR and NDB remains unmatched even by the tremendous VR of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Following a gps line just ain’t the same…huh kids today eh. Now get off my lawn.
    Edit, nice video as always and thanks for instruction on using the glass cockpit for this.

      It does feel rewarding doing it the 'propper' way... not all aircraft have GPS units, and they are pricy to fit and equip.

    Great intro to VOR and NDB and to see an NDB used to fix position. The only thing I would say is that I always understood that, to avoid possible confusion, radials only go FROM a VOR . So at 15.00 mins in your video you say that you are on radial 102 heading towards the VOR station on 102 degrees, whereas you are actually on Radial 282 but heading to the station on 102 degrees. When you pass over the VOR on the same heading you will then be on radial 102 heading away. So if you have a FROM flag and the CDI is centred, then the actual radial is always the reciprocal of your heading.
    I apologise if I've got this wrong but this is what I was taught!

    Really good simple overview Rachael, I remember learning this stuff when going for my license and having a truly terrible tutor who ver complicated everything and made it very difficult to learn. Once you crack it though it’s extremely useful
    You got all the information correct, you covered nav too, nav from, fixing, yeah I think you covered more than enough for flight sim purposes.
    I really enjoyed it, great video. Dunno if this is a thing in flight sim world (it used to be on the servers I played on back in the day) but a tutorial on different types of airspace and restrictions would be fun
    Again great video love, love you

      The goal is to keep these tutorials sim relevant, not overburden people with a stack of theory that if they want, they can find. Thanks :)

    Is this better than gps? It seems to me that gps eliminates complicated computations for navigation. I’m new to this hobby so I’m just asking I got fsknee board and it has a moving map and tells which heading in a straight line. I’ve only flown VFR so IFR may be the cat’s meow for VOR. Thanks you are very knowledgeable about these systems

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not, but its a core skill of navigation, and it functions well, however it's being slowly replaced with GPS and RNAV systems for nearly all its functions, but it's still heavily used irl. Sim? up to you what you want to get out of it!

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't forget, not all aircraft have a GPS, if you want to be realistic, you'll need this rather than a tab and a sim map :D Depends what you want though.
