J.J. McCarthy - Episode #2 | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Game Tape | College Series '24

  • Back here for my final College Series StudyBall, J.J. McCarthy part two. So, we watched him against Purdue, kind of his biggest game with over 300 yards and over 30 pass attempts. Hard to find that throughout the rest of the season. But, as I was going through tape to try to find another that shows the big picture of who he is, so I jumped at the Maryland tape after watching them play that game. So, we're gonna jump into that today, and we're gonna continue to look at the things that we saw in game number one: his poise in the pocket, his ability to attack down the field, the big throws down the field, good decision-making, and then we want to continue to check the accuracy. Was accuracy just about that one game, right? It was the one game that he threw a whole bunch, so we saw some accuracy issues. Do those things show up the same sort of way? Good, and question mark. Do they show up in each and every tape that we watch? #jjmccarthy #nfldraft #nfl

The maryland game was a game he had a serious knee injury following the penn state game, He was in pain in the entire game and played on guts only.

McCarthy, I've been told by other commenters, suffered a right leg injury early in the Penn State game. He did not practice the following week, and was not expected to play against Maryland due to his physician reports, but aparently it was one of those types of injuries that would not get worse if McCarthy played against Maryland, and J.J. insisted he wanted to play, and the coaches let him. As a result, the Maryland game is not indicative of the abilities of a healthy J.J. McCarthy. He had trouble planting and throwing off his right leg. The game is, however, a good indicator of his mental toughness and his ability to play with pain when he's not 100%.

Yeah he didn’t practice the entire week before this game due to a leg injury suffered during the Penn State game (also why they chose to run 32 straight times) but I wouldn’t expect an analyst to do his homework and find that out, like very few seem to have done lol

Kurt, the flat throws seem to be JJ's biggest negative, do you think they are correctable at the next level? I would think stuff like that would be easier to correct than fundamentals like footwork.. Guys trying to relearn the basics (Williams) plus the new offense and speed of the pro game seem to be too much to handle. but I'm just some guy, not a HOF SB winning qb. What do you think? Can fastball throwers like JJ be coached to take it easy sometimes at the next level? Is that an easier fix, or is it easier to correct basics like footwork at the NFL level for a guy like Maye?

Not a great game for him, to be honest. Misreads and accuracy issues. Running right out of a completely clean pocket with an open receiver right in front of him. Multiple missed INTs before finally throwing the INT. He has zero touch as well, only knows how to throw the heater. I think he's better overall than he showed here, but yeah, this one was pretty rough.

A majority of the comments are super defensive about mccarthy's performance and using his injury as an excuse but regardless if he had a hurt knee thats not an excuse for making bad decisions with the ball and overthrowing guys wide open. However, I've watched every game he had this year so I know this was his worst game by FAR. A bad game like this happens and its no need to overreact like a lot of you are

If a QB has a thin frame it's important to see how he performs when he's really banged up, like he was in this game. @@jona.scholt4362 This narrative is nonsense. They scored 13 points to that point. The drive went like this.
      2 runs for 8 yards
Missed throw, tipped and inaccurate/poor read
      4th & 2 - wide open screen - literally missed assignment
      1st & 10 - QB keeper 16 yards
1st & 10 - 29 yard throw - Roman Wilson. Saves an INT on an inaccurate throw
      1st & goal - run
2nd & goal - play action screen - wide open no read
So they ran it 4 times and threw it 4 times. He made 2 throws past 3 yards and both were inaccurate and could have been picked. They didn’t lean on him like he’s Joe Montana or Brady at the end of a game bro.
