Interestingly, I have noticed that Jetpens has edited their description of the product listing several times since I made this video. As of 10/12, it now says "Tomoe River Diary Paper" instead of the original "Midori Lightweight Paper". I dunno, man. I feel like paper shouldn't be this mysterious.
Hahaha I noticed that too! How strange! I wonder if it’s possibly the new Tomoe River Paper? Still though, I can’t imagine it would bleed through at all, especially with a gel pen. 😮
@@adventuredenali omg I’m so relieved it wasn’t just me! Haha. I was like, am I nuts or is this description different every time I pull it up? I’m leaning more towards it being the newest (Sanzen) TRP but I swear I’ve heard favorable things about it. I’ll have to pay more attention.
Agreed, I’ve noticed other weird things on their site as well 🤷🏻♀️ thanks for sharing as it’s a gorgeous planner and I love MD products. Glad you picked the camel one😊
thanks so much for the detailed analysis of the paper and grids. I love your attention to detail. an addict loyalist to the Hobonichi Tomoe River paper, you answered exactly the questions I had on whether to try the Hibino… and I think I will pass given the difference in paper. thank you so much!!!
The official Midori Japan website does list this as Tomoe River Paper, but you make a great point with your comparison! They do not state white type of Tomoe River Paper it is, but I believe it is the "new new" TRP which is being officially called Tomoe River Sanzen after the company that took over production. I don't own the Midori Hibino (yet!) so I can't confirm, but the sample of Sanzen sent with my Hobonichi 2023 planner does feel smoother than the "old" TRP that is still being used to make the 2023 planners. I am super interested for you to compare the two!
Sarah, thanks for doing this video! It’s my dream planner. I was late and it’s sold out everywhere, I was heartbroken.😢 The minimal aesthetics is just perfect: no quotes and no color changes, creamier paper - just perfect for my ADHD brain. I think it should be pointed out that the timeline goes from 4 to 4, making it perfect for night owls (I don’t think this timeline is common, and unfortunately night owls like me have to really hunt for it). The day of the week and name of the month are written in English (more convenient than Hobonichi). I honestly think the 2.5 grid is more useful than Hobo, because it forces me to use 2 lines=5mm, which is “healthier” for my handwriting, and the grid is just there as a guide. I hope Midori’s gonna focus more on this line next year, because it’s a serious competitor for Hobonichi. I think Hobonichi could really use some healthy competition, I mean, all those years and they still haven’t released an A6 version with no quotes?
Oh good point about the timeline! I hope you’re able to find a Hibino. They’re still popping up from time to time at random shops. I know Yoseka has done several restocks. And I agree, I hope Midori adds new items more regularly!
I love MD paper! I actually prefer it to any version of TRP. I was disappointed to find that this planner didn’t use the MD paper (it would have been too thick so I understand why they didn’t use it, but still 😓)
Thank you so much for this review! I hope you enjoy this planner next year and it meets your needs, I like how you are going to use it. I'm glad I didn't order this one though, although I love Midori products, that tiny grid would not work for me. The grid space in Hobonichi is the perfect size for me, I write one line per grid. It is interesting about the paper in this planner, so many different versions of Tomoe River paper, this one seems to not be the best. Look forward to see how everyone uses this planner.
It seems the tiny grid is a major drawback for a lot of people! And yeah, TRP is like a giant pot of confusion these days, especially when companies don't state what version they're using🙃
Hi Sarah! I just purchased one from JetPens in the camel. My writing is small and the pens I use are primarily 0.5 or smaller in gel and mostly nib or small in FP. Hoping what I use will not bleed through. Thank you for sharing this. Very informative. 🖐️
The paper sounds A LOT like a Namami I just purchased with the “New TRP” which is the in between paper from the original to the Sanzen version. It’s definitely had a lot more bleed through than the original and I’ve noticed a slightly different texture too.
Oh boy, at this point I wonder if we'll ever know for sure. I'm pretty sure the Fleurir Lab planner I show in this video uses a version of TRP between the Old and Sanzen--so it could be either New or No. 9. But because some companies aren't specific about the versions they use anymore, things get pretty wild 😂
I’m going to just take a guess on the paper, I bet it is the same paper as used in the Plotter. If you are not familiar with Plotter, they are a luxury leather binder system with 11mm rings but the company is the same company as Traveler’s Company and Midori. Their inserts are what they call “thin” paper. They also use the 2mm grid. I have the A5 Plotter and the “thin” paper does bleed through with some of my inky fountain pen inks and my Zig clean color dot markers. So because they are related companies, I’m guessing the paper might be the same.
That’s great insight! I don’t have personal experience with Plotter but what you say makes a lot of sense. Now I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for Plotter and Hibino comparisons.
@@sarahmartinezjournals I will too. I ended up deciding against it and will live through your use😂. Oh I meant to add that I’ve compared the Plotter paper and the TRP and they are comparable, or in the same category, but not identical. If I remember correctly, the Plotter paper is 50 gsm.
I would love one of these planners!...For me there is just one setback. I wish Iit was just a bit bigger. Like a B6. Maybe a a5 might be a bit too big for some people but B6 is my go to size.
I love this planner and am excited I was able to get one. On the How To Use insert paper that comes with the planner, at the back below the circle that shows the grid size, there's some kanji in brackets. That says Tomoe River. The Google Translate on my phone translates it properly. Also, a friend of mine works for Midori's sister company, and she received a promo copy for 2022 and an info sheet, and it says it's TRP also. I suspect it's the 68gsm, which is probably why it feels different from Hobonichi paper.
Oh yikes, that’s really disappointing because this version of TRP is so bad 😬. I think it’s funny that shops even refuse to say it’s TRP in their listings, like it’s so bad they refuse to acknowledge it, haha

Literally just ordered the camel from Yoseka because I missed out multiple times. As of 10:15 Wednesday, Jetpens still has stock of both. Same price $63. I am curious about the paper. I have a video loading this week about old TRP vs Sanzen and now I am curious! So I am interested to get this and see🤷🏻♀️ So many planners and notebooks coming in “TRP” but so many are soooooo different feeling, makes you wonder for sure. Thanks for sharing!
Ok well I am looking forward VERY much to your video! I honestly didn’t buy the planner for the paper but I am shocked if TRP has changed this much from all its predecessors. And I think it’s weird that shops don’t list it as TRP-why do we have to dig around and translate websites for this info?? This whole TRP thing is so bizarre!
@@sarahmartinezjournals I am absolutely miffed as to why the paper is so mysterious! I am doing my best not to let conspiracy theories get the best of me😂🤣 I have purchased a bunch of “TRP” notebooks and planners this year…strictly academic, lol. But not one feels the same! So weird.

I knew Jetpens were going to stock them. Checked earlier today and they still were not available. Thank you, thank you, thank you. P.S. I got it in the blue green color. :D
I’m looking forward to seeing how you go with this. As an FYI, whilst TRP paper changed, the paper in the Hobonichis never changed . It still remains the same original paper - till next year
Now I wish I had the Hobonichi test paper for 2024! The Fleurir Lab is one of the newer versions (not the Sanzen). I’d hate to think the Sanzen is so incredibly far off from all of its predecessors😔
I’ve heard that too but when I tested the Sanzen TRP it is completely different than the Hibino paper. Sanzen was actually really nice!-and had no feathering or bleed through that I experienced in the Hibino. I’ve had several others confirm the same thing. So it’s still a really bizarre situation!
Midori owes you a cut of the profit for enabling followers like me for purchasing this after watching your video. 😂. Just got the blue green version from Jetpens today and it’s sooooo cute. (Though it won’t dethrone my beloved Codex.) I used a Pilot 823 fine nib with Yamaguri ink and no bleed through. Looking forward to your set-up updates.
Hi Sarah! I wonder how it takes watercolor I can not stand a white page in my journals! 😝 I always enjoy your videos! Love and light to you and your family!
Hi, Marsha♥️. Someone commented and said she did a light watercolor application and it didn’t bleed through or wrinkle the paper. Made me curious so I might dig my watercolor out and test!
Thank you for such a detailed review, Sarah! I ordered the blue green one on Jetpens yesterday right before I watched your video. Ugh, I resisted it for SO long...NOT because I don't like it (I love the layout, the grid, the cover & the size). It's only because I have SO MANY planners/notebooks for 2023 already...not even sure what I'm gonna use this one for! Can you believe that I turned down my friend's suggestion of purchasing it from Asia for only half of the price (less than $30) then bringing it to me when she comes to visit next month?! ...Joke's on me (I guess this "hard to get" thing really got me). I had to snatch it up from Jetpens for $63, lol! Anyways, I got the shipping notification today and the Hibino is on its way. I'll have to figure out a good way to use it. I could use it as a 5 year journal (even 10 year as it provides 2 pages for each day) but I assume Feb. only have 28 days for this one?
@@dangvy7022 Haha, Thank you! Growing up, everyone around me knows that I'm obsessed with stationary. Not knowing what to gift me on my birthday? Stationary. $30???? That hurts 😂. But I’m glad you were able to get one, nonetheless! And yes, February only has 28 days but I suppose you can tip-in a sheet of paper for that.
@@sarahmartinezjournals Yup. I guess I could do that. Looks like I will be getting mine tomorrow. Hope inspiration hits when I touch the actual planner, haha! Enjoy yours! Looking forward for more videos on your Hibino. :)
Hi Sarah, thank you for your video. I wanted to jump on and agree with you about the impression of scarcity that is cultivated on the retail sites. I know that they are updating as much as possible, but it is frustrating that you're looking at what's coming and there's a 'sold out' indicator before its even arrived. & it does play with our emotions and can make us prone to an impulsive purchase in order to not feel as though we missed out. Anyway, those are my two cents. It hasn't stopped me from trying to get out of stock items either! 🤣
Amen!! I had a much longer rant but I edited it out, haha. The amount of "limited edition" things alone drives me batty. And also the fact that lots of expensive items have to be bought online sight unseen, with no ability to test out or just hold the product to judge it properly! But I also understand it's par for the course for niche items. At one point I decided against the Hibino for these reasons--look how that turned out😂. I really hope Midori works out their production issues next year!
I actually have two, in the camel color. One arrived yesterday and the second one today. Long story, but one is for sale. I got it from SumThings of Mine, which I believe is a stationary store in Japan. Ping me if you're interested. PS - The second one came from JetPens.
We are going to planner twins😝 I ordered the same color last week, it's still in transit 🥲 I'm planning to use mine the same way, I'm currently using the Midori 1D1P the same way as the Hibino 2 day, but the hour lines bother me for my "journal page". I can't wait to use the hibino. I love the tiny grid too! I got my first hobonichi weeks, but was instantly disappointed with the grid. I had a feeling this would happen, which is why I hesitated for so long. I know it's silly thing for grid size to ruin my experience, but as I was using the pen test page my handwriting was all over the place, not that I have nice handwriting to begin with 😂 but I need all the help I can get. Thank you for showing the covers, I was wondering about that. I think I'll use it as is😍
Twinsies, yay!🙌 I’d use the 1D1P in a heartbeat if it didn’t have such a weird layout. I much prefer MD paper! Wish they would slap a grid on that thing😄. Isn’t it crazy how grid size can affect writing experience?? I hope you find a way to work around the Weeks♥️
Darn, I missed it. Jetpens said to sign up for their newsletter to be notified but I only got the newsletter email today and they are already sold out. So sad!! :(
Thank you for offering a pen test! I had been considering one of these to use as a 5-year diary since I like the absence of clutter and quotes. However, the Coleto is one of my favorite pens / inks, so that would be quite limiting. If gel pens bleed I assume watercolor markers would too - I do a hybrid art/words journal so I don’t think this world work for me. Does the Midori diary or one-day-one-page paper hold up any better?
I’m glad it was helpful! I haven’t tried watercolor on it yet but will be sure to update if I do. The Midori MD paper that Midori uses in the rest of their books is fabulous with all kinds of mediums-especially fountain pen inks, gel pens, and even watercolor. It’s my favorite paper!
I know right😓. I definitely recommend signing up for the restock notifications on Yoseka and Jetpens. Yoseka has done at least 3 that I know of. I have a feeling once Jetpens sends out their first wave they’ll release any extras they’re holding back for shipping errors. Edit: yeah, so I didn’t realize Jetpens says in their listing that it won’t be restocked. Sigh 😔
Thank you for the thorough review. I also appreciate the pen test. I've been using a 2-page per day system with a weekly layout but it's a lot more thin. I was intrigued by this planner but my system is much more portable so I think I will stick with it (especially considering the pen test and thickness). I might would love this with a ballpoint pen for morning pages though so definitely keeping an eye out for restock on jetpens. Not sure. I bought the Hobonichi 5 year like the one you have but I haven't brought myself to write in it. I think there's something about the thickness that just puts me off. How do you write in it without the wrist drop?
I got mine from JetPens the night before they put up their announcement for the Hibino, and it was sold out later that same day. If the production issues story is what's going on, that makes sense--I had just figured Midori greatly underestimated the demand for a planner like this.
By the time I received the Jetpens email, the blue green was already sold out and both had been listed for 24 hours already-so disappointing for a very limited item😔
Hi Sarah. I think I saw your Ehon A5 journal, with a plastic cover, in the corner of the screen. If so can you share the size and where you got the plastic clear cover? BTW, Jetpens says the Hibino paper is Tomoe River paper. Could it be Sanzen? Thanks
I just used an old Jibun Techo cover and removed the screenprint. Video here: th-cam.com/video/HqI6qV-8Rec/w-d-xo.html. Jetpens has changed their paper description several times in their Hibino listing so I’m having trust issues, haha. They first had it listed as “Midori Lightweight paper”.
I’m not going to pretend I know all the ins and outs of all these brands, haha. From my understanding, Traveler’s Company’s lightweight paper insert uses TRP. I have no idea if Midori uses the same jargon after they split ways or if they produce any other TRP products. And there’s still the inconsistency of the Hibino paper being called different things like “thin diary paper” in some listings. I just really wish there was more consistency and clarity from these big, well-established companies.
@@sarahmartinezjournals oh, I agree, I don’t know all either, but if my logic and your comment matches in understanding-and I think they do-I am going with it being TRP. And I am sorry I can’t find one to purchase!!
@@Okie_Stitches I was so curious that I bought some sample sheets of the Sanzen TRP that should arrive soon! If I had to decide right this second, I’d say it’s TRP. And I’m hoping the sample sheets will confirm that!

Definitely NOT TRP either. I don’t care about that. I DO care about the teeny tiny grid that is bordering on useless to me. I feel like I wasted $65 dollars! Boo!
Oh no, Tracie! I have a feeling you’d be able to sell it even with a bit of writing in it. That’s also one thing that drives me nuts about this hobby-it’s nearly impossible to check these things out in person before deciding to buy!
OMG ! I have the same feeling about the grid size. I like the hobonichi grid size, and I should’ve pay attention to the details of grid size before just purchasing it from yoseka stationary. After seeing it in person, before even start using it, kind of hate it already. 🥹
Yep! Midori paper is actually one of my favorites and I was disappointed they didn’t use it in the Hibino but I understand why-it would have been twice as thick!😆

I knew Jetpens were going to stock them. Checked earlier today and they still were not available. Thank you, thank you, thank you. P.S. I got it in the blue green color. :D
😂😂 That’s too funny! Glad you got yours🙌
My one complaint with the thicker MD products was finding big enough covers. Because you make your own, have you/will you made one for the Hibino?
I’m not planning to put a cover on it but I made one for my 5 year that fits the Hibino if I change my mind.
From what I heard is the paper in the Hibino is the new TR paper that the hobonichi will be using starting next year.
Haha! I hope you enjoy yours! I’m currently making a cover for mine after I said I wouldn’t make one😅
Yo girl, that sounds like a great friend! *jealous* Now you not only have a great planner but also a great friend.😮
@@dangvy7022 Haha, Thank you! Growing up, everyone around me knows that I'm obsessed with stationary. Not knowing what to gift me on my birthday? Stationary. Me visiting people but they don't know where to take me? Stationary shops. Make me mad but not sure how to apologize? Stationary...It's the ultimate answer to everything basically, lol~
I would be interested
Please let me know if still available 😊
@@Rkive.wonderland Yes. I was just about to post on Reddit.
I sent my email earlier, but maybe TH-cam blocks that. Let me try again.
@@jyfreeman9210 email sent!
So sad!! :(
Oh no! I just got the newsletter today, too! That’s so irritating.
I can't believe the blue green one is sold out in two days while I was contemplating more pens to add to my cart I WAS NAIVE 😭😭😭😭
Sigh 😔
I wish the Hibino was in an A5. MY writing is to big for a6s.
We need this in undated
I usually set my phone or another book (like my Hobonichi Weeks) next to it to rest my wrist on😊. I hope you’re able to find one!
The Hibino is supposed to be the new Sanzen Tomoe River that the Hobonichi will all be using for 2024.
In my most recent video I tested the new Sanzen TRP and it’s VERY different from the Hibino. I think it’s weird there’s such a discrepancy!
@@sarahmartinezjournals I'll have to check that one out! I get so behind on YT.
Hello Sarah. In one of your video you showed the cover for hobonichi planner that you pitched but never used. Can I buy it from you?
Hi, Julia! I’m not planning on selling any covers at this time, I’m sorry!
I want one SO BAD but I know I’ll chunk it up too fast and not be able to use it fully. It’s my dream planner right there-except the time bars.
Yeah I'll definitely be scaling back on stickers, etc. But I can't wait to see how other people chunk theirs up!
I had to get mine from Japan. It was so hard to find and buy.
I’m glad you got one!🙌
@@sarahmartinezjournals Thank you Sarah.
I thought the Midori lightweight was TRP so it makes sense (to me) that either description would be correct. Right?
Sounds like kokuyo thin paper, the one in the jibun techo
I’m on the cusp of being convinced it’s TRP. But the most horrendous version of TRP I’ve ever come across!
@@sarahmartinezjournals it had to happen eventually lol
$63? I’ll wait for a dupe on AliEx😂I’d pay that for a leather cover perhaps.
I totally understand! I try to avoid knockoffs and support original companies as much as possible, but I understand why dupes are popular!
I was crushingly disappointed in this planner! I also got mine from yoseka stationery. Very upset with the minuscule grid size! I’ll have to use 6 boxes just to write normal.
@@mandyg9366 yeah! Just kinda ruins it for me. Think I’m just going to use it for German vocabulary
I believe Midori manufactures paper... Their weights and descriptions are unique and they also have a cotton paper
Yep! Midori paper is actually one of my favorites and I was disappointed they didn’t use it in the Hibino but I understand why-it would have been twice as thick!😆
Man I found this and didn’t purchase now I wish I did
Hopefully Yoseka will do some further restocks if they uncover more in their back room. They’ve done 3 so far. Sign up for their restock notification if you haven’t already!
I'm a Codex person for journaling ... They changed the name 🙄
I’ve been tempted to get the Codex again but I’m holding back until I have a reason to use it!
