she's the singing voice of some Disney princesses like tHe princess in mulan... and even in alladin..
She gives me one of the reasons why I should be proud, that I am a Filipino despite of the political issues

I watched "Miss Saigon..the making" parts 1-5 just now. I had no idea it was such an amazing production. It's really interesting watching the original show unfold. These people put so much hard work into this that I'm glad someone had the hindsight to document it for us watching so many years later. Now I really want to see it!
Charles Kong I hope you do!! It is powerful and you will never forget how you felt the first time you saw it. I want to see it again too! I lived in Chicago until about 10 yrs ago and got very spoiled being able to see all major productions. Let's hope they professionally produce Miss Saigon on DVD. :-)

Ah, you see, the production staffs went all over asia to find not only an actress but a singer. They found that in Philippines ( lea Salonga and Monique Wilson ) . This was followed by strings of Filipino talents. I believe the audition is open for all asians not only filipinos

Not just Asia but all over the world. Their last stop was the Philippines. They were almost frustrated for not finding the right Kim until someone suggested that they go to Manila. And the rest is history.
Most of the world's finding the right person to sing in a particular spot ,stops in the Philippines..like Arnel Pineda of The Journey..
they had the best choice. Lea salonga now is an absolute world class artist until now continue to shine. a Disney legend, a Tony awardee, a recording artist, and a princess voice..

The producers realised that most of those who auditioned in London, NYC and LA were Filipinos or part-Filipinos...... Thats when they decided to go to Manila....and the rest was HISTORY =)
Well they wanted an Asiatic look that can sing fluent English so it just makes sense at the time to zero in on Filipino-populated areas like US (LA, NY, Honolulu) and Manila. And when you do that, you get large chance your applicants will be of Filipino background. It's like Mulan live action where they were looking for places with lots of Chinese to cast -- most applicants were of Chinese background.
The team landed different countries before Philippines...And finally they satisfied for the role of kim to the very small girl but lung of steel LEA Salonga.. :D so no question they will also conduct Audition In the Philippines for the second time around.

The documentary did not feature LEA's real audition piece.... I saw it back in the 80's on TV. And I think once in a concert, Lea said, she performed ON MY OWN and GREATEST love of all during the audition.
Manila was the last stop and according to documentary I watched,the producers were so desperate and exhausted to find Kim until someone told them go to Manila. Filipino talents are not so well known in theater back then and having that enormous qualifications could be next to impossible to find much less in Manila...but then Ms Lea Salonga stepped in for audition.

Yep, and other Filipino theater artists then wowed them. Not many actually know that we used to be the only colony of the USA so we understand Western culture, have been exposed to it, and speak English with some speaking with native-like ability like Lea Salonga.

I saw this "making of" a long time ago and watching it again reminded me of the crush my young self developed for Lea Salonga. She has had a very nice career and the cute girl became a beautiful woman!

Whoa! Just read some of the comments here. Regarding casting Lea S. For the role of Kim, they did held auditions not just int he Philippines but the entire world, it just happened that Lea was the type that they were looking for at that time. Just beacuse the role is supposed to be a vietnamese girl doesn't mean the role really should go to someone who is vietnamese. They cast it according to talent, not decent.

requirement for Miss Saigon is so clear..: ASIAN and can speak fluent english... i think we know why most of the asian casts came from the Philippines... what's wrong with that????! you get the role if you fulfill the criteria..as for Lea playign Eponine she explained it clearly inone of her vids just look it up..

it's sad to see people upset the lead role was given to a competent singer from the Philippines. In film or theatre you will often see people of different ethnicities cast in roles different from their own. I think of roles South African actress Charlize Theron has played as southern, midwestern, of New England North Americans, UK actress Thandi Newton as African American, or African American Debbie Allen playing Latina on Broadway.It's about the magic you bring to the role, not just ethnicity.

It was a hot topic back then, why they casted a filipina or filipinos to play the roles esp of kim, it was bec when filipino singers sing, they can really sing without an accent, as compared to other asian singers. Although there were asian-americans who can sing but not as great as from the philippines.

Buzz in Manila- MIss Saigon revival at West End! Early this week, they held auditions, of which six (6) Manila-based Filipina singers/ stage performers made the cut. No final results yet. Supposedly, the producers headed to Manila instead of scouting all over the world for the next Kim (& Gigi, Engineer & Thuy) because of the track record of previous performers of the musical.

What are you talking about? I was referring specifically to the musical "Miss Saigon." I know it's based on the opera "Madame Butterfly," which is about an American Lieutenant and a Japanese girl, but that's not the subject at hand. In "Miss Saigon" Kim is Vietnamese though she was originally played by a Filipino and now everyone thinks it should be played by a Filipino. I was suggesting why not a Vietnamese singer/actress since Kim is supposed to be, you know, Vietnamese.
I worked in Vietnam for a very short time around 2010. None of my Vietnamese colleagues there know of Miss Saigon, let alone that it was a story about a Vietnamese girl during the VN war.

Can't agree more. In Vietnam, I think we have actress can do this role, but since Lea is filipina, they held the audition for the role of Kim in 2013 in Philipines (again)

Taylor Swift isn't in it at all. She was considered to play Eponine but was turned down for a British actress. Fantine is played by Anne Hathaway and Cosette is Amanda Seyfried.

I don't get Monique's role..can someone pls explain why is there an 'alternate kim'? and one reason(I tink) why they haven't yet cast a Vietnamese actress for the lead is most of Vietnamese actresses don't want to be associated with the story... it(miss Saigon) misrepresents Vietnamese & american soldiers during the Vietnam war it is somehow misguiding to what really happened back during the war which was very very horrific and it should not be sugar coated with this fairy tale...anyway, love Lea Salonga and wow Monique is Hot back when she was younger(I live right next to her, we're neighbors...hehe)
Monique was Lea Salonga's understudy. So if there was a night when Lea was sick or had an emergency and couldn't go on, Monique would go on as Kim and a swing would fill in for Monique. I could go on forever in regards to the second part of your question, and as you probably don't really care about my opinions, I'll just leave my answer at that.
The voice is the essence. They need to find a girl who has the pipe to sing the songs. They auditioned Southeast Asian girls who can pass as Vietnamese.
Sid Aureada Did you watch this "Making of" video? Or have you seen the whole musical in person? This far, far from a fairy tale, sugar coated. This is about an orphaned Vietnamese girl who got pregnant and abandoned, who committed suicide so that her little boy would have to go back to the US and have a life with his American Father. Seedy aspects of the war were sprinkled into the story for reality, but they did not write Miss Saigon about the war itself, so they focused on the main subject of giving up your child for a better life. Even committing suicide so they will have their chance.
Most infants were dumped at orphanages as "Gui Doi"-dust of life beggars. This project got started because Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil saw an article with a really heartbreaking photo of a crying Vietnamese Mother at an airport turning her son over to an American father he doesn't know. Many Mothers gave up their child so they would have a better life. That original news article and picture were reprinted in the Musical's paid program book.
Heather w not just if lea is sick or whatever the alternate is if lea is doing kim 4times a week monique is the alternate who do the kim role 3times a week thats usually how it works...lets say lea is kim on monday and monique will be kim the next day.... or if they have 2 shows in a day monique will be kim at 2pm and lea will be kim at night or vice versa its just that monique has another job role if she is not kim, she is mimi one of the bar girls...
@@maricelraneses7313 An understudy is just like a substitute teacher. Any lead actor, who has to do most of the acting and singing if it is a musical, has an understudy. It is not really about alternating but really more when the lead gets sick. That is why many understudies want the lead to get sick so they can show that they have the chops to do the part well so that in future theatricals or musicals, they will be the lead and not just the understudy. The understudy is usually seen as the second best.
