This vid touches a special spot in my heart. We sailed our sailboat from the Bahamas to Hispanola. We approached late at night. We were probably 50 miles off shore when we started to smell the island. It was obvious that is was the smell of charcoal being created. We sailed the Caribbean for 9 years. In those 9 years I never experienced this again. Sadly, Haiti is denuding their island of trees for charcoal. Hopefully, the Dominican Republic doesn't make the same mistake and we find an alternate way to provied fuel to Haiti.
Put it this way the harder the wood the longer-term it will last there's special wood for that and u know when it's hard because of the sparks it gives out of (kupairsh ) 👍🏿
Interesting way of making charcoal.. I feel like this was an incredible amount of work and took a long time though... there are a lot of ways to make it pretty simply, including covering a pile of wood in mud and let it burn for a few hours before plugging up the air holes. That only takes like 6 hours. This took several days. It’s always interesting seeing it done if different ways though.
He may have lost a lot of coal for cooking, but if that area he used as a pit will be used for gardening, he will be surprised why his yield is so abundant!😊

Thank you Sir for your service to Humanity.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great job james !
Thats the way we use to do it also over here !!
Caribbean style 🙌
This is so amazing. This shows that there's no age limit in any talent.
This is not something for young people. It takes years of practice. The older the person doing it is the more talented they are.
@locall_herbs yeah no one under age 80 could ever light a fire and cover it with dirt
No age limit to any talent huh? You see alot of elderly gymnasts? How about 90 year old mountain climbers, basketball players, track stars or skiers?
Can we used wet wood?

Pure knowledge. Hope it’s passed on

This King Is very inspirational keeping the knowledge of his tradition up. How much profit does all that charcoal bring in?

nice job man..!!
Couldn’t u use steel sheet metal with holes punched into it to line between the soil and wood. Seems like it’d cut the work in half.
What's banana stems for?
Just like Cuba!
I feel bad for him. That's so much work for him. For charcoal.
It’s a whole lotta charcoal
I wonder if the longer process makes the wood stronger, this burning longer?

St. David's
crude and laborious
I can't think of a more wasteful, time, and effort consuming way to make charcoal. What a lot of work and wood for such little charcoal.
What method do you like?
You must be white
Someone needs to tell them to use it in the soil.
What will this do?
He's a tough ole bird! There may have been an easier way, maybe not. Anything easy holds little value. The lamb was his little buddy
Ummm, unfortunately, I can't really catch most of what he is saying. :(
