My favorite is the container concept. If it doesn’t fit in the container something has to go. That goes hand & hand with the ‘one in one out rule’. I’ve used that with clothes. If I bring an article of clothing home something has to get donated. That way the drawers & closet don’t get overloaded.

Protip: shoe or Amazon boxes work as containers for those of us still figuring out what works for us space/usage wise.
Don’t purchase pretty containers until you’re sure you’ve fully decluttered the space enough to fit your lifestyle.
For me that means living with it for at least a month before upgrading.

    • @HalfBlindPlans

Yeah! Dawn used diaper boxes for years before graduating to bins. Empty cardboard boxes are fantastic, especially for testing things out, quick fixes, and even being able to trim them to just the right size. New bins from the store are pretty, but they aren't the only solution. I used cardboard for so many things for so long. Mostly I've got "real" bins now, but sometimes a box is exactly what I need. 👏

    • @helenasillye4791

why upgrading if a shoe box serves the purpose? 😊 the containers are mostly from plastic, and they can break and then, they will became trash and pollute the planet for several HUNDRED YEARS... 😢

I have implemented the donate-able donate box, and it has been a game changer. I get the medium size moving box from Walmart for $1.60 and set that up in my closet. Everyone knows where it’s located and what it’s for so my kids will put their give away stuff in there too. Me and my husband have a deal, when I tape up the box and put it by the front door, he takes it to a donation place. I had an easy time identifying clutter and putting it in boxes but I had a VERY hard time actually taking it. Our new arrangement works perfectly

We are in the early stages of planning a cross country move. Putting things in the perspective of "Would I pack this up and move it 2000 miles with me" has been a great mindset shifter for me. Of course there will be some things we will keep for now like furniture, but there are SO MANY things I have realized that I have no interest in dragging along with me.

  • @ClaraStJean

The biggest thing I have changed my mindset about is gifted items and gift giving. I used to think I'd be an ungrateful jerk if I didn't keep everything that was ever gifted to me. I realize now that gifts were given with good intentions and received with genuine appreciation (while I might not use the item, I always appreciated that somebody thought of me and wanted to so something nice for me), so I am not obligated to keep items for the rest of my life. I was then able to let go of many things I wasn't using and think carefully about my gift giving. I point blank ask what people want for an occasion. Or ask if how they would feel about replacing exchanging gifts with experiences/spending time together. I have ready a short list of consumable items I really enjoy for when I get asked what I would like to receive. I have said to my Mom and sister that while they don't need my permission, if they are ready to let go of anything I have given them in the past, I would not feel any negative way about it. In fact, I will be happy for them to enjoy the benefits of simplifying their homes.

Great video and tips! One point I would consider to expand on is that if a person has 1 hobby, it may only fill one season. Like gardening may happen for 4 months of the year due to the weather, so maybe the other months of the year a person focuses on reading or cooking or baking new things. I think during the year I have different interests depending on when I can accomplish these things. I think your mindset about having specific hobby or hobbies helps in getting them done and is more enjoyable, but sometimes those hobbies are limited to certain times of the year.

All I have to do is scoop it up when i go downstairs and put it into my ever running donation bag. I don't argue with them any more either that it's cute or still in good shape or whatever. I’m a minimalist, so only have a few large counter appliances that I’ve deemed worth the real estate they take up. But a 💡 storage solution I came up with after falling in love with an air fryer, but didn’t know how to store the heavy thing so it’s easy to access & put away: I bought a square plant stand on casters (there are plenty of lovely ones on Amazon) and put it on the floor of my pantry under the bottom shelf. When I want the air fryer, I just wheel it out to where I can bend over and lift it without contorting and possibly hurting myself. Then slide the plant stand back in place while I’m using the air fryer, of course! 😀

I have kept a donate bin in the closet for years, and never hesitate to toss something in. Once in, I don’t even think about it, when it is time to go to the donation center, I put everything in a black bag, and get to see and confirm what is leaving. My other favorite thing is, never set anything down, put it in its home. I make the bed as soon as I stand up, so that’s done, I turn and look at my room when I leave and tidy whatever is needed. My whole place just stays neat without any effort.

Life is so easy after decluttering even though it's a constant work in progress. After you gave us the "fantasy self" tip, I was able to let go of so much crafting inventory. I had scrapbooking stuff piled up but actually never did one thing with it. I was able to donate all of it to 4-H office along with tons of other crafting supplies. My love and passion is sewing garments, and yes, I have an entire basement as my shop. But, I'm so happy to spend time on charity projects using up my library of fabrics for little girls dresses to donate. My house is clean and I have the time to enjoy my grands, sewing, and friends. I have found over the years that I’ve ended up following one minimalist trend after another, with some success. Now, I’ve taken the bits and pieces from different people’s ideas and created my own way. For years I’ve wanted to buy a juicer, I knew why I wanted one, what I needed it to do, but I put off buying one for years because of other people’s ideas of minimalism; recently I bought one and it’s doing exactly what I wanted it to do. Uniform- I was a nurse for many years so my uniform was given to me. Now I’m retired but although I never wear blacks and my uniform is somewhat colourful, I do wear similar things each day, and my clothes are just enough in number so I only need to do laundry once a week- I live by myself now. Minimalist ideas are good but we all need to decide for ourselves what is best for us. I’m still working on just enough on many things.

I like all of your tips and tricks, but I really like the idea of creating an every day uniform. I've worn a actual uniforms for many of my jobs and, now that I'm close to retirement, I have created my own basic, daily uniform, with a few added extras for fancier events. Usually a t-shirt, jeans, runners, and hoodie. It's so easy, comfortable, and stressless. Creating drawers in cupboards is something I've done for many years and, again, so easy. Love your channel, your tips and advice.

The most surprising favorite tip of mine is using a tray or similar for containing daily use items or that serves as a drop-off location for random items. It really does bring it all together as one, and for my butterfly-style husband, it has helped us find great ways to compromise 😊

I like to simplify my wardrobe. I don't wear a single color, I just buy multiple in different colors. You will usually find me wearing jeans and a V-neck T-shirt, but the colors are different every day. Buying is easy - when I find I shirt or jeans I like, I just get every color I like. People don't notice I'm wearing the same thing, and I feel like it's something new because of the colors.

Dawn, I minimalized and organized my personal products, make up. It saves me money: I don't buy things I already have because everything is evident, AND most importantly, saves time getting ready for work. I estimate I shaved 10 minutes or more each morning - not hunting for necessary items, etc. I love this - I got the clear organizing containers for my drawers and it has been life changing. So many benefits! Thank you :)

One tip for your bathroom "drawers" in the closet:. Take round stickers about 1/2" to 1" and labels the tops of medicine, over the counter meds and any small bottles. When you pull out the "medicine" bin next time, you will be able to find the aspirin bottle quicker.😊. Love your vlog.

I LOVE CAROLINE W!! My favorite thing from one of her videos was to not use your prime real estate for stuff you rarely use. Easy access is for everyday items. High, low, awkward storage (or basement shelves) are for rarely used stuff. Why do I keep all my sewing stuff in the dining room when I only use it during tech week for drama club? Nope! Moved to a shelf in my underused upstairs linen closet. Games are hard to get at but dvds that we never watch have prime real estate. Switcheroo! My brain gets used to “the way things are” no matter how inconvenient. I need to be told things explicitly since they will rarely occur to me naturally. Thank you for your basket drawer idea. Also a complete game changer. You clever women in TH-cam land are saving my sanity one video at a time.

For bins in cabinets, plain boxes work fine. I have a pull-out box in a bottom cabinet for all my Tupperware. You can also stand larger boxes on their sides (all flaps pushed in) and they create 'cubbies' for top shelves in closets. Great for stacking shoes or blankets and making use of vertical space in closets.

My favorite and one I have done for years is making drawers in cabinets. It is so easy to lose items in the back of a cabinet. 30+years ago, I lived in a home that had a kitchen cabinet placed in the corner. You could not see in that dark corner. While we were preparing to MOVE, I crawled almost into the corner cabinet and found items that I thought I had lost or gotten rid of sometime ago. From that day on, I made all cabinet have a basket or some kind of container just so I could see what I had. Thanks for sharing because I have implemented almost all your other ideas. Looking forward to the next video.

Baskets in the upright freezer completely changes how we spend and less food is thrown out. We have found that a shelf for pots and pans with lids under them helps with pans. Takes less space than the basket. By shelf, I mean the white ones from Walmart that give has four small legs on it. Put it right inside cabinet by the stove. Baskets in the bathroom for hair products, lotions, etc. Really helps us.

One of the most helpful of these tips for me has been the drawer concept. I use it with containers under the bed that slide easily on the carpet. Then she started get borded with it, she started printing cute bands on ends of pillow cases, and letting kids and grandkids to make their own special ones with the many left over paints she had and didnt want to waste. She moved on to sewing her own clothes, and quilts, and then as she got older, she made a ton of baby blankets for her grandkids.... at the end, she was going blind so there were quite a few bits and bobs of yarn and some material, but nothing that wasnt pass-on-able. Clearing out the closets meant we didnt have to while we were in pain at her loss. Dad didnt bring more things in, but there was lots just the same even with moving out grandkids that could use the furniture.

I used old cookie sheets to "line" my upper cabinet top shelf, for rarely used spices & such, so I don't have to haul out the step stool. I just grab the edge of the pan and "bring down" the whole shelf 😁 I even do this with the top shelves of my wire-rack pantry, for light weight things like cereal & pasta. It lets me pack in a bunch of things in a small space, and make it very accessible, while hiding it above eye level, so my daily/constant use things can be left on half full shelves 😊

I went through some of my costume jewelry and I was able to let go of quite a few pieces. I work in a corporate office and see the same people every day, so that is a small justification for having a less minimal wardrobe, but I have realized/accepted that I truly enjoy wearing a variety of clothes. I love the colors, fabrics and textures. I love to add in accessories which I never used to do. I have decluttered items that no longer work for me, but I have kept a big variety and I’m okay with that. I generally keep tops and bottoms paired as outfits that I love, and each week I refresh my closet rod with a new assortment from the cedar chest right below. Once clean, the clothes from the past week are neatly stored in the back of the chest. I don’t hesitate to aggressively declutter other parts of my home, and my whole family has been pretty supportive through that process. Dawn has been a tremendous inspiration and I love to watch one of her videos and then declutter a space. It’s an iterative process but the muscles do get stronger. I just don’t apply them as much in my closet and that’s okay. 😊

So timely, I inventoried and decluttered shoes today. Caught myself tallying up the "value" of the discard pile. My favorite tools are the donatable donate box... it's just the two of us these days, so it's in the laundry room and my husband knows where it is and uses it. I bought the little drawer organizer boxes for the kitchen junk drawer 2 1/2 years ago...and have never had to reorganize it since. I'm over 65 and retired, so although not quite a uniform, my style is dialed in and my wishlist is primarily replacements for items that are getting worn out. The one-in, one-out rule (or two out) is also so helpful when shopping. Now please help me with my wedding dress: I was prepping it to donate when my husband walked into the room. 47 years and stalled out again, LoL. Also I've been learning to periodically "declutter" TH-cam/social media accounts I'm following when I find they're causing me discontent.

(Sorry, I don't know how to record that to make it sound right.) Anyway, you get my drift. There are things you can make of them for mementos, and charities that want them for other uses. One of biggest mindset ones I use is the idea of choosing to live in a state of TRUST - in one's holy being of choice or The Universe's (for me, it's God's) - ABUNDANCE instead of living in a state of FEAR or LACK. This is what started me decluttering almost 20 years ago. It was in a book - if I can find it, I'll edit the comment. (I may have decluttered it - LOL!) The basic concept is that there is safety in letting things go, because you can trust that your needs will be provided for.
🐠🐟🐠"I can get rid of those scuba fins I have moved and never touched through my last three apartments, even though I DO want to go scuba diving again someday, because I trust that my Creator will provide." 🐠🐟🐠" I'll either have extra cash to buy new ones, someone will lend me theirs or maybe there will be rentals wherever I end up going." 🐠🐟🐠
I still use this all the time when I'm making tough decluttering decisions.

We are moving in 2 weeks and I’ve gotten rid of so much even after decluttering for 2.5 years. I’ve been asking is this worth paying someone to move it? Another great back to basics video! You’ve helped us so much, I’m so grateful we started when we did.

I love the idea of having a donate bin in each of the closets. If it's not a yes, then it needs to go in there!

I like the idea of a donation bin in the closet. I usually once in awhile try on all my clothes then purge which is a bit overwhelming.

I’ve been doing the donation basket in my closet trick for 2 weeks and I was able to clear out 2 garbage bags full of clothes already!

I just had my Aha moment now 😊 Listening to you talk about the Justin case items.. I had lately realized how important happiness is in my life and I have been just trying to be happy and grateful as much as I can and life is amazing. And in this moment is all my power, all that is important is being happy in this moment. I have been holding onto so much that has been holding me back from current happiness in fear of future unhappiness. But I know it's okay to let go and trust that all will be well and everything is always working out for me. It's okay to let go and be free and be happy now. I can keep what makes me happy to keep now. Thank you ❤

Regarding marketing, you’re so right. I recently got rid of instagram (Facebook is on thin ice!). It’s all just becoming too much input, too much digital inventory and it’s stressful. There are many things I love about IG and FB, but the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives for me.
