As a Slytherin it’s interesting that he doesn’t seek the limelight for himself but chooses students that are so talented and charismatic that they literally cannot escape the limelight.
I think it is a bit of everything you've said. I would think it is also why he would choose certain adults in his friendship circle but it would stand to reason he is also surrounded by all the other professors. As an individual, he needs to feel relevant.
There is another potential reason. For a solitary academic like Horace Slughorn, his prized handpicked students may be a kind of surrogate family. Highly likely considering he is unmarried and has no children of his own.
I would think he also collects students who can give him connections later on. Like front row best seats to quidditch games if one was in his club. Hermonie didn't get in, but she did, I would think since he asked about her parents who r both dentists, they would do good work on his teeth as a ty for helping their daughter. He didn't know what that was or the slytherin twin girls, I think they don't have that in the wizarding world cause magic fixes and cleans teeth in a snap. HPF, heres ideas for the next vids. Talk about dragon breeds, merpeople, house elves, giant purple toads, and more creatures. Maybe also the history of some spells like Delfina Crimp who invented the severing charm, or Delfina Crimp who made the mending/repairing charm.
@@sandisteinberg731 I thought Neville was accepted into the club due to his parent’s reputation, but then got kicked out due to apparently not possessing his parents’ talents in Slughorn’s eyes.
I think you nailed all the reasons. Horace Slughorn is a fascinating character to read about and he is the proof that you can be a Slytherin and still be pure good. Horace Slughorn and Andromeda Black were two pearls in a sea of mud. Besides if you take the values of Slytherin house and think about them almost all of the values are positive. It is all about how you choose to behave.
It is a curious question: Why isn't Snape in the Slug Club if being gifted at Potions was enough for Lily to be a member? After re-reading Book 6, I think I know why. Snape didn't actually write the parts of his Potions book about Potions. Lily wrote them. We have two points of evidence: the first has already been mentioned, Snape wasn't in while Lily was with Slughorn. But also, Hermione says that the Half-Blood Prince's writing looks like a girl might have wrote it. Alternatively, there are a few points that might work against this theory. Slughorn might have misgivings about Snape's mother or simply not like his unkemptness much. Or Snape and Lily had already severed ties by their sixth year. But even so, if Lily was a potions genius, it is possible that she goes ahead and retrieves a year 6 Potions book before year 6. And perhaps, Snape being so obsessed with her as he was also gets the same book at the same time. Except he doesn't understand Potions like she does and requires her to write pointers down for him so that he can remember. As you would assume the one who is the gifted potioneer wouldn't need to write down quite everything. While the friend who isn't quite so gifted at Potions would need to have little hints written out so they they could keep their mind focused on Dark Arts instead which is where Snape's true passion lay. Then Dumbledore didn't keep Snape in the Potions position because he was good at it but because it would remind him of Lily, of why he is helping Harry.
Hi! Im not not watching for any other reason than I've 2 little girls and I don't get past the TH-cam shorts. But when your videos are recommended to me (meaning they get through) I watch them faithfully!
He doesnt strive for greatness himself and be in that lime light despite of his great number of magical talents/knowledge. He would rather be the catalyst for others with great talent to achieve it with his help, thus and reap the rewards of his association with such wizards and witches.
Slughorn was a Slytherin & their main character traits are to be ambitious & smart in a cunning way. That totally fits with many of the motives you were talking about. Getting private info on influential families, getting into favor with future influential wizards, getting part of the glory of their future success, & using them for connections. His success at that must be greater than we see in the story from Harry's point of view, since at the beginning of the movie he's hiding from Death Eater "recruits". If it was only because Voldemort worried Slughorn would overcome his fear of ruining his image to tell someone about the horcrux conversation, then Voldemort would've simply sent assassins to take him out long ago. I think Voldemort was betting on using what influence Slughorn had after doing a little memory charm on him to truly forget that 1 conversation long ago.
hello, kevin’s back to comment in about everything on what dean just talked about or should i say harry potter folklore, but anywho this video describes it all slughorn’s personality and behavioral patterns and i get it everything that slughorn is in terms of how he prized anyone of worthy to be nitpick of people he wants and for harry potter folklore prized on the money that slughorn is egotistical of in terms in the nitpick of people and being praised just like what harry potter folklore said. continuing in this comment just like slughorn i also have an ego and what are in my terms of my ego i have behavioral, well in my terms of how i’m egotistical is everything is just me me me me me and well i like although i don’t let it get it into my head but my ego does get the better of me and i end up in trouble, always beating myself up things aren’t going my way only because of being upset and i do have low self esteem self esteem, i do like having an ego as long as how i can make myself turn around egotistically as long as i do enjoy myself and i kinda forget what i did forgot about as long as i don’t dwell on what would make myself upset, i’m just ok as long as i got my spirits up, nothing beats what makes this dude this dude as long as mr kevin remains mr kevin egotistical ly but not full of himself, that’s me egotistically behavioral patterns, just not arrogant.
the self esteem angle i never bought. he was one of the few wizards highly respected by both dumbledore and the death eaters for his skills, if validation was what he truly wanted, he would have chosen a more...ambitious career path to satisfy that need given his talents.
would also love to bait people with profiterokes to have some social gathering. and then the trap would set and they would be forced to play a star wars escape game with me MUHAHAHA
In the real world he would probably be arrested. Think about it a middle aged man is hyper focused on teenage kids to the point that he "collects" them in a club. That's kinda creepy.
Question. When Dumbledore needed that memory, why was it only Harry that could retrieve it? All Harry did was get Slughorn drunk. Now that I think about it. That’s kind of messed up. Dumbledore let an under aged student get one of his faculty members shit faced to take advantage of him.
SLUGHORN ALSO COLLECTED. CERTAIN STUDENTS WHO HAD SPECIFIC TALENTS HE VALUEYD SO HE WOULD HELP THOSE STUDENTS REACH THEIR GOALS THAN TAKE A LOT OF THE CREDIT +EXPECT TÒ B REPAYED IN SOME WAY.
I had a teacher that did this to the honor students in my high school. She collected them like slughorn and even had get togethers with them. She wouldn't even learn the names of students if they didn't have a high GPA or came from a high income family. I called this group of bers the slug club
Thankfully slughorn is still a good teacher for the other students, just he never goes the extra mile as he would do for the ones with exceptional talent. More of a neutral than the negative of this teacher you speak of if you catch my drift.
What if Cedric Diggory didn't die in Harry Potter and The Goblet of fire & if Cedric Diggory were in Harry Potter The Order of The Phoenix & Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince & Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows part 1 & Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows part 2 & Cedric Diggory would I've had a bigger role in year 5 & Year 6 & Year 7 part 1 & part 2😢
I understood it as, his best achieving students were like his trophies. The results of his labour.
Most likely, it's all the above
As a Slytherin it’s interesting that he doesn’t seek the limelight for himself but chooses students that are so talented and charismatic that they literally cannot escape the limelight.
Slytherins are about power. He just chose to collect power a different way.
I think it is a bit of everything you've said. I would think it is also why he would choose certain adults in his friendship circle but it would stand to reason he is also surrounded by all the other professors. As an individual, he needs to feel relevant.
Slughorn is a very typical slytherin. And is a great way to show that Slytherins dosent necessary is evil or bad.

I wonder if Slughorn ever regretted kicking Neville out of his club, lol.
I've wondered that too.
Neville wasn't kicked out; he was never a
Slug club member.

Slughorn is a Taurus man so he naturally is attracted to people who are valuable lol 🤣
He doesnt strive for greatness himself and be in that lime light despite of his great number of magical talents/knowledge. He would rather be the catalyst for others with great talent to achieve it with his help, thus and reap the rewards of his association with such wizards and witches.
Maybe he never married and viewed the slug club as his children

This all makes sense.
Thanks Dean for all your videos. Wishing you & your family a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year !
"There are other ways to break a Man Tom" Dumbledore to voldy another victim😂 No wonder Tom didnt get dark arts position
bro, just an hour ago i was looking at your channel hoping you had uploaded a video:P
This is the first video to pop up in my notifications in a long time.

How can you have a video sponsor and still use TH-cam ads in this video?
I think Slughorn is a completist. At least he doesn't collect scalps or shrunken heads or something else equally unpleasant.

Sluggy was a clout-chaser... If he had been a muggle, he would have been suking arses on instagram
