“You were my hero growing up, I remember reading all your speeches, hundreds of times… you were the only dark wizard who was nearly as powerful as me.”

Grindelwald wanted Achilles style immortality. He wanted the world to forever remember that he was the man who led wizard kind in finally rising up and "taking their proper place above the muggles." That is one of the largest differences between the two dark wizards.

Grindelwald is in a sense the Thanos of the wizarding world, in the sense you can see why they would do something like that but you disagree with how they are doing it.
You hate Grindelwald because he has good inside but performs evil acts, like you know he can do better and that is what angers you.
And you hate Voldemort for all the evil acts for selfish reasons which are to inflict pain on others to satisfy himself.

Yes, they're strikingly different. I'm disappointed WB made Grindelwald so one-dimensional in FB3. It's like they thought HP fans wanted another Voldemort-like villain :(
The election scene felt particularly jarring to me.
    1. Grindelwald never cared about blood purity, as it does not affect magical ability. There was no reason for him to oppose Jacob and Queenie's marriage. Such marriages would help the wizarding community grow bigger and stay healthy.
    2. They made him into someone who likes to publicly torture defenceless muggles for no reason. Grindelwald may lose his cool when he feels threatened (for example, when Aberforth tries to interfere with his and Albus' plans), but Jacob clearly was no threat to him.

Random fun fact: If Jude Law hadn't been cast as Dumbledore. They could have had the 3 actors that played the same character in another movie all play Grindelwald as well. That character being Tony in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Since the other two were Colin Farrell(Technically Percival Graves but we likely only see him as impersonated by Grindelwald with polyjuice) and Johnny Depp. There was actually a fourth actor who played Tony but that was Tony in real life whereas he took different appearances when entering the titular Imaginarium and he was the only character who could do so.

Fam, with all due respect; You made this far better and more interesting character in your head and thought that was how Grindewald was actually portrayed.
We don’t know much about him from the books - We know his supposed motivations as told by Dumbledore regarding the time they were aligned, and sure he did experienced loved… Other than that he’s pretty much a non-character. His personality, his morals, how he actually felt regarding his deeds (including how “honest” the whole “greater good” thing is, maybe it’s straight up a empty justification) even his views on muggles, maybe he was just Voldemort under a mask of good intentions. He didn’t make Horcruxes, but he did made the search for the Deathly Hallows a key goal, even adopting their iconography as his banner (remember how Krum was mad with Luna Lovegood’s dad at the wedding in Deathly Hallows precisely over this) and the whole point of acquiring them was due to the belief that who had all 3 would “become the Master of Death”.
I definitely agree that the character you described should be what we got to see in the movies, like a Magneto of the Wizarding World. But that’s not how he was written, not in the slightest. Probably because JK can only write one type of villain, and by the 3rd one they just kept going from there. What a waste of Madds Milkensen frankly. He would have been a great nuanced and even sympathetic Grindewald (without loosing his threatening presence, I mean, just look at the dude).
Unfortunately these films are the worst thing since “Cursed Child”
    God bless for “Hogwarts Legacy”.

If this were real history of our world Voldemort would go down as one of the bloodiest kings or lords in world history. Grindelwald would go down unfavorably as a loser of conflict because history is written by the victors after all. In essence, Gindelwald could be compared to Kaiser Wilhelm II and Voldemort could be compared to Hitler.
