I’m somewhat of a weirdo, I guess, because I don’t like variegated plants. Although I think your frydek is beautiful, I still prefer the regular frydek. And, as for the warquenum, no no no it doesn’t need variegation, it gorgeous the way it is.

The Delta Force is also not guaranteed with that cross. I believe a true delta force was only created once. It’s some kind of mutation during the crossing of the two. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You’re correct! Even if you cross-pollinate those two anthuriums & they look exactly like the Delta Force, you can’t sell it as the Delta Force.

  • @kaylak58
    @kaylak58 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Delta Force originates from one unique specimen and can only be attained from cutting or tissue culture. It can't be recreated just by crossing clarinervium and pedatoradiatum, although many have tried. Kaylee Ellen at The Rare Plant Shop in the U.K. was selling them for 150 pounds (I bought one and imported it to the U.S. and it was STILL cheaper than what a lot of people are selling them for here). DF is confirmed in tissue culture by some large labs so you might be able to get yours hands on one for a decent price in the next year or two!

agree, they look like they are diseased. there are so many things you can admire anthuriums for, the natural variability is insane. you hardly see the same venation, colour, texture, sinuses etc. between plants of the same ID (some exceptions to this). i suppose the downside of this is that they hold their value pretty well, in the world of anthuriums you often pay for certain desired characteristics, or the insanely priced one offs that will never be seen as not prestigious etc. (offsets of some of the papillilaminum forms, crosses like the circus peanuts etc.) the only chance of these getting more affordable is TC (like the Delta Force)

I was at a plant show a few weeks ago and bought a 3D printed No Face bud vase for $5 and the seller gave me 5 syngonium cuttings. One of them I chose was the syngonium chiapense! I picked it because it was so different. I absolutely love it and it’s growing very nice little roots. Best $5 I’ve ever spent.
Also a tip is go to shows in the last hour sellers mark things down like crazy. I also got a 2” addisonii mint var for an amazing price.

Some of these variegated plants are just not nice. I can see why they produce all the variegated plants they can, but as consumers we really need to be honest with ourselves about whether the plant looks nice or not! Some just look diseased, or like a sick bird smeared droppings all over them. 🫣 There’s definitely a few variegated Alocasias on my list, and the variegated Chiapense. I haven’t seen a variegated Anthurium that I’d actually want in my home. The dark ones absolutely though! 😍

I didn’t know I wanted a burle marx flame until seeing it in person. It’s an extremely slow grower so I don’t think it will drop in price very much. Although it is in TC, it’s still a slower grower. The texture is probably my favorite because the leaves are very thick, almost similar to a snake plant.

    • @variegated_stingray
      @variegated_stingray ปีที่แล้ว

It's not true that the burle marx flame is a slow grower. Not at all. It grows just as fast as for example a small form Monstera deliciosa, about 1 leaf/3,5-4 weeks. It grows slower because people don't give theirs enough light - the BMF is an extremely light-hungry plant, much more so than your typical Monstera deliciosa.

I’ve gotten really picky about cacti as I only have one small south facing window where they’re happy 9 months of the year and tolerant the other 3 months. The ghost made my heart pitter patter. Hopefully she’ll be okay for the next 2+ months. I wouldn’t have paid UK prices, but they’ll probably come down in price over there if they are so inexpensive here. Patience! 😺

Generally, I'm not into variegated plants. I like plants that have white veining for example, or white Caladiums, or plants that have natural varigation like Euonymus Japonicus, or Manjula Pothos, but while half moon leaves look amazing as they're new, I don't care for how they look as they're more mature.
I also don't care for the idea of breeding to make a plant ill; or to pay absurd "rare" plant prices; I think basically people are looking for exclusivity in vegetation, and there's something in that, which makes me uncomfortable.

It's basically an one-off mutation. But it's been in tissue culture already and therefore price for that specific clone "Delta Force" will inevitable drop quickly. I'm not particularly into trendy plants. The biggest reason is probably that I'm not on social media, except for TH-cam, and the fact that I have a limited budget, and limited space. I love plants, but I also love clean and tidy spaces. Not that I'm a minimalist, but I get overwhelmed easily. I also get upset when plants look scraggly, so I tend to go for easy care plants. I've killed so many plants over the last year.
The plant I really want right now is a Chlorophytum orchidastrum green orange, which I cannot find. I might have to settle for an Aglaonema orange flame.

Aglaonema Cutlass comes to mind for that time period. I honestly don’t particularly like them now because I think of them as old lady plants. Now I’m the old lady but I don’t like old lady plants. 😂

I don't understand the concept of plants that go into or out of fashion. They're plants. Their genus has existed for hundreds and thousands of years. I also don't understand the idea of astronomical plant prices under the guise of "rarity". I'm Colombian. Philedendron, Monsteras, Anthuriums, etc., abound in my country. Exotic or "rare" to me is a Foxglove, a tulip, or an iris.
International trade exists. It's established. A 3-4 leaf Anthurium Waroqueanum with 18 in/ 45 cm size leaves, retails for roughly $25.00 USD. I understand phytosanitary permits, product loss, transport and commercial costs, but current market prices, don't justify the difference.

For some reason I absolutely don’t like the type of plants you have the most of. Just not my vibe. However, I absolutely love seeing your plants and how much you love them!
I’m more a succulent (haworthia and Gasteria lithops guy that dabbles in Dracaena)
Thanks for teaching so many people and spreading the joy of indoor gardens!

I'm not the biggest fan of variegation either. I sometimes see individual leaves that have created a gorgeous variation, but overall their just not interesting to me. I love a striking contrast between leaf and vein color and leaf shape and color. I'm also crazy about leaf texture. I don't go for the trends, I'm more of a plant rescuer😅 I love finding half dead ones on clearance and nursing them back to health 🪴🩺

You unfortunately can’t just make a DF as it was a one off from that cross. It’s been the only one to show those traits. Therefore, It can only be done via stem cuttings or TC. They have come down hundreds in the last year and you can currently pick them up for £250. They have been in TC and the markets will be flooded soon enough.

Definitely dont waste your money trying this suggestion, True delta force is only available from clone , hence its now in tc and available for a couple of hundred pounds, in 2024 , it will become readily available, as they get imported from Thailand in volume.

The only variegated plant I genuinely think is beautiful and would like to own is a variegated frydek. It makes me sad that the anthuriums are falling into the variegated fad like every other plant it seems like lately. Anthuriums are SO stunning all on their own. Gosh so stunning. Why make them look ill 😅

I'm so sad that the upcoming trends are mostly variegated or hybrid forms. It gets so boring and most of the variegation looks sick to me. I don't know, am I the only one who thinks the mint variegation looks like a virus?
I am in love with the dramatic look of velvety dark leaves. I love them so much and I think variegation takes so much away from them

  • @jenat82

Your most "trendy" plant, its leaves are a work of art. There's no way around that.
I'm a budget plant mum. I generally try look through the supermarket stock to see if they got something variegated by mistake. lol I also can't have any house plants too demanding because at this time of year all my south facing windows are filled with all the pepper and tomato plants I had left over from what I wanted outside.
But at the end of the day, it all adds up to the same. Wanting to be surrounded by plants in your home.
Hang on.. Didn't they try to sell the monstera mint as if it had varigation that was like a philodendron silver sword in proper blotches? I'm not really a fan of the marbled effect.

Because we're all living in a super fast-paced world nowadays with social media. Social media personalities need to have the coolest, fanciest, most rare plants to impress and gain more viewers/followers and those people are blown away by those plants (and often also just because they're "rare") and will put them on their endlessly growing and never ending "wishlists".

Don’t be put off a burle Marx flame, I have two and both have given me 8 leaves each this year, roughly a new leaf every 7 weeks. My anthurium regale has given me two leaves this year, and that is most certainly slow! So don’t listen to people that say BMF are slow growers, they are not, and growth pretty similar to a standard monstera deliciosa.

  • @ashleybryant4153

I got into plants because I saw a pink princess philodendron and at the time, a nice one would run you $300. I got one last year at Home Depot for 10 bucks. It was actually three separate mature plants and a few smaller ones. Just wait. That plant will get cheaper.
Edit: looks like a giant marble queen pothos 8:54
