    I honestly agree with your opinion regarding cross training in both bjj/judo and the importance of maintaining their styles independently. If anything, it helps cultivate you as person and helps you build a better well rounded perspective in grappling martial arts overall. I also feel that it is important to train the throw game as it is the ground game, you honestly cant have on without the other.

    I wonder how much judo would be needed for karate? Having in mind in some styles you are allowed to do some judo style throws... I bet judo yellow/orange belt would be a good starting point...

    Amazing content as always, OG !
    I know this is one of the old video of yours but I was just watching it earlier for guidance.
    Now - I could probably guess your respond to this question, but perhaps you may have a preference for a good reason
    ( Which is what I am looking forward to hear )
    Would you prefer doing Judo and BJJ on the same day or spread them across the week?
    Long story short - My school offers BJJ 4 times a week and Judo 2 times a week, hence we can either train 4 times a week or 2 times a week by doing a "double" (BJJ and Judo back to back)
    I had done experiment doing both option but couldn't decide which one it would be better:
    While doing 2 days of "double", I find it more challeging (Especially mentally), because that is a 3-hour training session with 2 half an hour sparing at the end of EACH class ( Randori Newaza for BJJ and Randori Tachiwaza for Judo, obviosly ) - However, I found myself more "warmed up" for Judo and ready to do Uchikomi, thanks to the BJJ class right before.
    4 days of single class are more relaxing as it is simply 1 class per day and theortically sound better because we may focus on one skill set per day.
    Thank you for taking the time to view my (Kinda long) question !

    Good video. Funny you mention about how square Judo is compared to BJJ and how can you be put off by this. To me, happend to oposite way, ive done Karate want to learn grappling and i was a little put off because the BJJ club i visited was too relax, too free spirted, with music, etc. lol and left with the feeling that this people werent taking seriously their martial arts training lol later i understood why this happend and how serious BJJ people really is.

    I can agree but also disagree all my favorite BJJ players have strong judo backgrounds Ray Stevens, flavio Canta, Travis Stevens, ffion davis, Brett Johns. Id say go all the way with judo I've been to ray stevens seminars where he's said its how to build a complete grappling game.

    I like judo instead of BJJ during quarantine because less rolling and fewer classes. Also I understand what you are saying about more control in judo classes but judo is like BJJ if you go to multiple schools you might find one that is more chill. I tried one judo school where the instructor was impossible because you had to bow 10 times to the mat, 10 times to the mosquito, pat your tummy after situps, bow to the ceiling fan. wtaf. Obviously i'm exaggerating but what the hell. You had to put a mat on the mats, you had to bow as entering the mini mat, bow when exiting, bow on introduction and exit to each five minute training partner. However, my current school has like a tiny bit more bowing than we had at BJJ. People barely bow to the mat to be honest. I am more traditional than them sometimes. BJJ schools also vary, some of them have ridiculous traditions. I went to one school where the kids would yell "jiu jitsu" after doing each exercise. what the hell. Some of the traditions are weird but cool. But anyway the point is schools vary.

    You said in a different video sport Judo would work for self defense if you adapt. But you didn't address the fact that self defense Judo has some awesome moves that pertain to self defense an not a judo tournament an if you take sport Judo you are missing those awesome self defense moves in your Arsenal. I'd appreciate your feedback. Awesome page by the way very informative.

    • @OGFITNESS
      @OGFITNESS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      hmm... thats an interesting question, it would then resemble greco roman wrestling a bit more but with all the judo techniques. I think so, Grappling is grappling and as such i think if would open up the practionner's mind and force them to adapt their judo. And imo its always a good thing to be force to be more creative.

    is it worth doing an ippon deserving throw in a bjj competition? it wouldnt give more points, they might think you are an asshole if they fall flat on their back, maybe the impact gives you an opening for your submission unless its one of those throws that throw far away(like a tomoe nage)

      @@gingercore69 sorry i havent gotten to it yet, but let me answer it here for ya, i once got thrown in a bjj comp, years before taking up judo, landed hard on my back, cracked a rib, dude fell into half guard, passed my guard, and i think he subbed me.
      I was told he was a judo guy b4 the match, and even then, didn't see it coming. All is fair in war, in competition if youre allowed to throw and your opponent cant defend it thats his pb. I never thought of on opponent as an asshole for that, it inspired me even more to learn Judo, later on as a yellow/orange belt in judo i met him again and we sparred in Judo, he wasnt able to throw me. Judo brings alot to the table for bjj, and vice versa

    What about the other way? How much BJJ does a Judo guy need? Blue Belt, Purple Belt?

    • @toma3447
      @toma3447 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Blue belt in BJJ is good enough for most. Purple belt in BJJ is hard to get. They say a BJJ purple belt can start teaching and knows most the stuff a black belt knows. Blue belt you will have the fundamentals down. Purple belt you will be very well rounded and very technical. Getting a purple belt in BJJ is like getting nominated for black belt. Going from blue to purple is where people struggle the most.

  • @justinpriestly4777

    How do you feel judo and bjj compare according to belts? Is a black belt judo players knowledge of judo the equivalent of a purple belts knowledge of bjj?

    • @lane3586
      @lane3586 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand the comparison your making. Why would you compare a black belt to a purple?
      To answer the question, in general, the only 2 styles that I take the black belt seriously is Judo and BJJ.
      Are there mcdojos in either? Yes. But in general, the black belts in both are very knowledgeable in their respective styles.

    • @Jake-pm3pz
      @Jake-pm3pz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a judo black belt is equivalent to a bjj blue belt in ground fighting, and a bjj black belt is probably equivalent to a judo green belt in takedowns
