    Great video, thank you. I've been practicing martial arts since I was a kid. I earned a black belt in karate and a 5th dan in hapkido. I always wanted to learn Judo so at age 53 I signed up for my first Judo class. Oh man I wish I started this sooner. It is so different than anything else I have done and I'm finding it hard to retrain my brain. I'm 58 now (blue belt) and I have learned that Judo is complex, grueling and thoroughly enjoyable. Despite so many clubs only teaching it as a sport (I know that's a huge part of the art especially for children) it has massive self defense application. I think grip fighting and throws from the clinch (basically where Judo lives) along with newaza is the missing link that every martial artist needs.

    • @angelsjoker8190
      @angelsjoker8190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Having done various martial arts for over 35 years, I've recently come back to Judo (while still doing kickboxing) and think it's actually even better for self-defense than i.e. BJJ (which usually is promoted as "the" self-defense martial art). In a self-defense situation, I don't want to go to the ground (which BJJ prefers) because of the threat of additional opponents who could stomp you while being busy with your first opponent, but if it goes to the ground, a Judoka still can handle most non-BJJ specialists there. As a Judoka, when it goes to the clinch, you have a good chance of ending the fight right there when you throw your opponent and slam him on concrete. So (kick)boxing and Judo are a pretty useful combination if you want to defend yourself.

    The good thing about judo is that it's like learning to ride a bike. I've done taekwondo for 19 years. Karate 4-5 years. Judo 1981-87. On those rare occasions when I've had to defend myself judo has been there in the bonemarrow. Without even thinking about any special throws or something like that it just comes naturally if you've learned judo. Tkd doesn't really work if you're not fit and very flexible. Plus it's just stupid to use except for maybe basic kicks to the liver or belly. Judo is great. And fun. You don't really hurt the other. Just a good way of controlling the other
