  • Allopreening is simply the grooming or preening of the feathers of another bird. In breeding season it strengthens the bond between a male and female & is a social behavior for those of you who own birds - it is very common to gently twist off the sheath of these pin feathers. Dad is the first to start allopreening E11 today. E10 was sleeping by the rails. He gently preens the back, neck and head on E11. Last season, Harriet was really getting into preening E9 so much that he had no where to run and hide on the nest to get away from her. :)
We also got excellent closeups today of the pin feathers coming in on E11's wing. Pin feathers are the beginnings of the contour feathers that eventually will constitute the full layer of juvenal feathers. These feathers will take several weeks to fully develop, and once they are complete the eaglets will be ready to fledge. The first pinfeathers to emerge are the flight feathers of the wings (along the trailing or back edges of the wings) and the tail, because these are the longest contour feathers and take the most time to grow. Soon we'll see carefully arranged tracts of these contour feathers coming in on the backs, upper wings and tails, breasts, and heads of both eaglets.
    Thank you for watching!

Thank you for all the educational information. It means a lot to me to understand more about the behaviors and anatomy of these birds.

Hi Ann - that is wonderful - what is her name? I have had greycheek parrots and a lovebird. My sister has a severe macaw going on about 20 years + now! Mine loved to be preened too!!

Lady Hawk, her name is Mumbles, and she talks a lot. I take her off of her (big) cage everyday to play fetch on the floor, not to mention other activities all day! 🤣 I know she's female, as she's laid eggs a few times and she thinks I'm her mate... lol
Birds are very entertaining, but also very messy, aren't they? 😉

Cute name!! Mumbles!! I can just picture her playing on the floor :) Yes they are very messy - I used to have newspaper all around the cage and floor and it still got all over lol

So enjoy reading your posts Lady Hawk. You provide so much interesting information. I look for your posts every morning and throughout the day. Love to watch the development of the babies. Cried last year when E9 fledged. Can't wait to see how 4 fit into one nest. Stay warm out there.

GE Lady Hawk! Amazing job on that description! So glad you got this footage😊. Cannot believe Dad was the first to allopreen this season. Have to admire the gentleness of his beak movements. He is our Dad Of The Year for sure or as our friend Elizabeth called him recently, "Dad Of The Century" lol😃. Thanks Lady Hawk❤ ttys

In a way, with all the firsts that Dad has been allowed to experience this season I am happy he got a chance to spend some time with E11 and begin allopreening. He is more gentle than Harriet - the babies are in for a surprise when she starts doing it :)

Hi Mommabird - how wonderful!! I bet he really enjoyed the preening sessions with you. My greycheeks would sit on my shoulders and drop their heads and let me shuck their pin feathers off all the time!

I so remember poor E9 getting preened!

I remember how much E9 hated to be preened. He would tolerate it for only so long.

Poor E9 was the subject of Harriet's obsessive preening!! At least there are two eaglets this season so she can go from one to another lol :)

Isn't E11 always by Dad? That has to be Daddy's Little Girl!
