Once again, I am in awe of just how much your cutie little birdy buddies love and trust you. They're so sweet, with their fluffed up heads and pinning eyes, and how they show you where to go to get the next pin out. That's the whole package of satisfaction for me!😊
It's interesting how it's pretty aware of what you're doing. It understands that you're trying to help with pin feathers and let's you know if it's done with a particular spot getting pulled, shaking its head like "That's enough there."
i absolutely adore birds so much, the aspect of them needing time to trust reminds me of myself, the sound of their loud chirping reminds me that i do infact have a friend, they are also just so beautiful and friendly
This video specifically is the most satisfying to me. Probably because the pinnies are so distinct, and you can clearly see the coat coming off. My two budgies are so scared, even of my hands, so I can't do this for them. I don't think I've even seen them preen each other, either.
Thank you! I se my budgies preen each other, and somtimes they don't bother with the pinnies. Other times they have a whole head of pins in the morning, and it's all gone by the time I get home from work 😂 I do recommend just taking to your business every day, sit next to them and show them some spray millet. They may not come to you until a few days in, but let them come to you! Soon enough they'll be jumping on your hand to eat those treats.
Wow - what a preening session! Absolutely wonderful. In addition to watching those fabulous pin feathers fall, I loved watching Athena's pupils dilate and constrict.; made me wonder what she was looking at! I'm wondering, however, why you chose to pull offf the sheaths rtight over your pc keyboard; it would seem pretty likely that all the dust created would harm the computer.
Aaaahh I wish I could reach into the video and squish the pin feathers myself with my fingers 😆 My birdies rub their heads against everything in their cages whenever they get pin feathers so there’s never anything for me to help them with lol
I wish you could do that too! Esp if you have fingernails!! I get your pain, many of my budgies finally paired off all of a sudden so a lot of them have budgie friends to preen them :)
Is this very recommended ? I hope so because i love watching these❤❤😂 Your so patient and so is the bird. I thought parakeets were too hyper to be still for this. wOW.. thanks for sharing
Seems to be helpful but I think you are pulling just a bit too much. Just crushing the sheath of the pinn feathers is probably fine. I usually notice that the rest will just release with movement and them scratching their own head.
хахаха спасибо! Могу поспорить, что тираннозавр с перьями был таким же милым. Если бы я мог вернуться в прошлое, я бы последовал за ними, и пинцет мне тоже не понадобится!
Thank you so much!! I always feel the best using my fingers, but it's so hard to get in there :) I'm def drooling when I'm doing this...every.single.time hahahaha
Just like humans drop strands of hair and grow out new ones, birds drop feathers and grow out new ones. New feathers grow inside a protective “tube” of keratin, which then falls away / can be scratched away when the feather is fully grown 😊 How many feathers a bird drops at once and how obvious it is depends on the species; lovebirds for example, seem to in general have pin feathers that are much more dispersed and “hidden” than budgies, like the bird in this video. But it definitely depends on each individual bird also! Some parrots scratch the pins off themselves, so you can almost never see them lol
After an injury and recovery, my budgie actually lets me preen him now too. But my fingers are too fat for his little head. How did you get them accustomed to the tweezers?
@@christopherherr7561 I actually don't know haha. But I did it slowly. First put blunt tweezers near them, let them bite it and get accustomed. Then the best part, rub the tweezers (closed) against their cheeks. The moment the tweezers scritch they'll automatically like it!! And then you can slowly open the tweezers and test it on the regular feathers. Take it very slow and easy. Anytime the bird looks nervous, back off :) and lots of spray millet after.
Thank you! Usually when its not ready, it's bendy and the bird will let you know very quick that it's not ready, haha xD. They'll yank their head away, or nibble on my fingers.
Absolutely scratch petting works! And that's the best way, too. It's just for me, I can't get into the inner nooks and crannies of the puffs because my fingers are too fat! If you have some nails, the birds love it when more!
I think they don't. They preen them themselves, but they can't reach every spot. Or they prefer when another does it, like a friend or a mate. They're social animals.
The keratin sheaths surrounding the new feather can be very itchy and uncomfortable, so helping preen the feathers in areas they can't reach brings some relief to the bird
Okay i didn't know that this was a thing. I've got 4 birds and unless i have food in my hand when they're hungry, I don't get to even feel them when sitting on my hand or arm. And forget even holding them, they will peck the shit outta me.
Not if the pinfeathers are finished developing, which these all looked to be. There is some risk with using tweezers specifically, since a lot of people lack the finesse to avoid poking if the bird moves suddenly even if the bird is used to them (which doesn't seem to be an issue here), but it's not innately harmful and especially not if the bird is allowed to determine where/if the human touches like in this case. It's just not often *needed* if you have a flock since the birds will preen their buddies' pinfeathers.
Because they would be preened off by a bird partner in the wild . It’s an act of love and care towards each other. Some birds don’t like being preened by humans though :-)
What Katey said above. Also it is like you getting a haircut! Feels good and soothing. You gotta let your new hair grow in, just like budgies have have new feathers come in! I would never advise to do this to a budgie unless you are VERY trained and careful. If your budgie trust you enough to let you even do it. These two obviously trust each other.
Strictly speaking, it isn't necessary. The sheathes of the feathers are made of keratin to protect the new feather, it will eventually dry out and flake off naturally. However, many birds in the wild have their pin feathers preened open by close flockmates as it simply feels good for the bird in question. Like scratching an itch or being brushed by your significant other. Birds can't do it themselves in specific areas (especially anything around the head) and if your bird trusts you enough, they may like it if you perform that preening duty for them. Pinfeathers Galore is very close to their birds and very experienced with using tweezers to simulate the beak nipping off the keratin but even just two fingers will do just fine and likely even further the bond a bird has with their human companion.
It isn't necessary to and she has a flock right there. There need to be warnings on these every time. No one no one should be tweezing a birds pin feathers without being a certified professional or having done it thousands of times and having the trust of their parrot. It really shouldnt be done with a human tool AT ALL, only with fingers, u can scratch your bird just as you scratch your dog. See how she gets scared a couple times. One wrong move by a naive, innocent young person doing this to their bird could BLIND or Kill their bird. And then they will blame this channel. That is why there need to be warnings every. Single. Time. Watch other parrot channels - this just isn't done. It's not safe and you can seriously kill your bird. Just bc she's been OK with it, doesn't mean you will be. And the likelihood is most ppl would never be able to safely tweeze their birds with tools that could literally bleed them out.

What are these little “pinkies” or pin feathers? Is it common? I’ve never had birds, an I don’t remember my grandparents’ parrot having these.

They're pink when they're full of blood, and white when they're good to go! All birds have them and get new feathers this way :)
