Rain-x has a windshield crack repair kit that comes with a cool gadget that I repurposed to lutherie. It’s like an adjustable 4 suction cup spider that can straddle the crack and in the middle is a glue pump /pressure foot that can both squish in glue and also presses down to level the joint. I have pictures here somewhere showing how I used it on an Ovation “ crack-o-matic “ top. I will see if I can find the pictures and get them to you.
Martin archtops are definitely rare; they even had an electric model with DeArmond Dynasonic pickups in the 1960’s. You might find more information on them on the Longworth book or one of the newer Martin books that have come out since then. I have a 1937 Epiphone Triumph with a similar color; it’s very interesting to see how the finish texture and color is almost identical. It’s almost as if all factories used the exact same products back then. This one came out beautiful, sir! Happy 2024 to you and yours and everyone here!
Nice video, as always. Has anyone done a test to see how much glue is really pushed through more when doing the suction cup technique? Doesn’t it really push glue deeper in a crack?
Thanks! I’m pretty sure StewMac has run a few tests and the results are positive. They even make a suction cup that we can hook up to the air compressor to force glue in at 80psi. 💪🏻
I have a 80's maybe early 90's Fender Gemini II that I got for my 13th Christmas present. I hate the way the guitar plays. But I could never sell it. Its my first guitar. And my dad bought it for me. So I understand. I wouldn't sell that Doc Watson guitar either.
A lot of mysteriousness those archhtops.
I was hoping to see you put your arm inside the guitar to make those crack repairs. Nice to see one that hasn't been made into a flattop.
That's a rally nice sounding guitar. Love your refinishing work. He should be chuffed
Thank you very much!
Great project, and great picking! Doc would approve.

Dick Boak now retired from Martin may still have access to some of the history you have in your hands.

Don't know if I missed it, but did you do anything to the fretboard/neck of the guitar? That guitar sounded great! I bet that sells first!!
The neck was good!
On the top crack like that how do you decide when to used hyde glue versus aliphatic?
Hide glue. As in made from animal hides. Mr Hyde is something else lol
I almost always use hot hide glue on antiques
