My favorite hollywood story I've ever heard is Don Rickles walks into this restaurant with this girl he's dating and he sees that Frank Sinatra is in the restaurant as well. So Don tells the girl he's going to the bathroom and he goes up to Sinatras table and says "hey Frank I'm here with this girl I really like and I want to impress her. Could you do me a favor? In about 5 minutes could you come up to my table and say hi to me so that she can see that we're friends?" So Frank says "yeah sure. No problem." So Don goes back to his table and about 5 minutes later Frank walks up to Don's table sticks his hand out for a hand shake and says "hey Don! It's good to see you! How have you been?" And Rickles looks at his hand and then looks up at Frank with this disgusted annoyed look on his face and says "come on Frank! What are you doing? We're trying to eat here! Can't you just leave us alone?!" And Frank Sinatra is stuck there with his hand out and all he can do is just pull his hand back and walk away embarrassed! Lmao it's my favorite story I've ever heard!

Yo Scott, I was so so so confused when I came across this story while reading through Kirby's Fourth World stuff a few months ago and I think I was secretly praying for you to make a video about it so that I wouldn't have to do a lot of research on weird early 70s pop culture myself. Anyway, this video is dope and your channel is dope and your work has inspired me to focus some of college essays on comic books as something worth seriously investigating. The work you do has value!
@@NerdSyncProductions I know but Scott now you got me itchin to know what a Nerdsync analysis of that series would be... (Also it's so cool that Steve Lieber sent you that, had you read it before?)
When it came to Kirby, there was a lot of "revenge" moves made on all sides. When Marvel got him back, I've heard they purposely tried to embarrass him and set him up for failure. It sounds to me that this issue of JO was Kirby's way of taking a slap at DC for how they'd tied his hands after hiring him.
This was a weird one, speaking as someone who mostly knew Rickles from his cameo work on old sitcoms, like they had his likeness but didn't know what to do with it (and couldn't write insults). Also, Sparta is adorable.
I'm commenting this before watching the video (sorry) but I've read this comic, and I remember just thinking to myself after reading every Don Rickles line "What? What is happening?"

Jimmy Olsen was always wacky, he turned into a turtle man (twice), porcupine man, you get the idea....but this was so far 'out there' you needed to read it through a telescope. I think that's why S v B hurt so much - turning the goofy but innocent and loyal JO into a tough undercover CIA operative who gets shot in the head after a few minutes on screen. I didn't like James Olsen on Supergirl (great character, but why that name? New character, new name) but this wasn't 'Superman's Pal', just a random....
David Letterman (I believe it was Letterman possibly Conan?) whipped out one of these comics on the show when Rickles was a guest and asked about it. There's a clip on TH-cam somewhere.

Don Rickles would actually be happy to know that you used the line "His name sounds like a disease." I'm sure he would respond: "And what do you call NerdSyc, hockey puck?"
