      @R AJ Actually yes people do. They are torture testing these rigs by towing (some of them) max tow weight set trailers up a an extreme grade. People towing will encounter this situation either using the trucks for work or towing up mountain passes. If you want to watch flat towing check out their mpg loops where they are on flat ground. #tfltruck

      @threesixtwofive 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @R AJ you've obviously never driven around with guys who work. Trucks get pushed hard when your not looking. Anyways, if the trucks can handle the torture test then it's capable in the general public's untrained hands. That's the whole point.

      @@JohnDoe-nz6bk I think the Jeep did well towing its maximum weight. It did much better time than the 2020 GM 2500 gasser towing its own max weight and did it with better MPG than 1500 and F250 as well. WDH should have been used on all but the F250.
      That being said, I'll be towing 8000 lbs with an F250 and NOT with a Jeep :)

    Could you guys do a towing and mpg test of two of the same HD truck, same build and motor. but with different axle ratios? Like 3.73 vs 4.10 “ram” or 3.55 vs 4.30 “ford”. I really want to SEE what difference there is in towing time and fuel consumption. Both with and without a trailer, 0-60 time, and time up the Ike gauntlet 👍🙏

      Mike Hunt I second this test. I am looking to buy a new XLT/Lariat F150 that will be my daily/adventure rig. I come from an off-roading background and like high geared vehicles, but have never really cared about fuel economy up until I moved to CA.

    • @86rustbucket
      @86rustbucket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I believe they already did the fuel economy test on the 4.30 vs 3.55 Ford, they haven’t done the max load tow test on the 3.55, only on the 4.30 blue F250 where it killed it on the Ike, probably my next power train for sure and I’m currently in a 6.7 Cummins. I think the 4.30 cost them about 2 mpg on an empty highway run.

    FINALLY a test using the same trailer, I HATE when MotorTrend or C&D tests trucks with a percentage of their max trailer capacity... that doesn't help at all! If I have a 4000 boat and trailer or 6000 pound camper or 8000 pound horse trailer, I want to know how well various trucks can tow THAT trailer, not as a function of their max capability. I'm most surprised by the fuel economy of the Godzilla powered F250, the whole point of that design (other than low maintenance) was MPGs. I'll have to watch the mpg loop tow test to see how it fared. At any rate, nice test guys!

    You guys really need to do this with three of the same brand truck. Like Colorado vs Silverado 1500 vs 2500, or ranger vs f150 vs f250. This test is kind of apples and oranges

    • @SSMJ
      @SSMJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean we've actually seen from the other tests that the segments are actually pretty close to each other. The mid-size trucks reform about the same as each other and the full size 1/2 tons perform about the same. That becomes even more true when you have the same load between all of the vehicles. This test shows that I'd expect, that maxing out a midsize truck is much worse for towing then putting barely any weight on a 3/4 ton or a good working load on a half ton.

    • @shaunclancey1107

      @@SSMJ yea but the ranger and the colorado/canyon dont have a engine desgined for a minivan in it unlike the gladiator. i think colorado 3.6 vs the silverado 5.3 would be a good comparison. and you shouldnt be cross shopping a colorado and a heavy duty in my opinion if the truck is consistantly towing 80% or more of a half tons limit or past that limit than get a heavy duty otherwise you dont need it (i would say ranger vs f-150 but the engine options cause to much diffrentiation and youd need to test every power terrain and thats not reasonable)

      Having driven all three, knowing the powerband and Dyno results for all three, they're incredibly similar, with the Taco being the slowest, the Gladiator being the next, and the Colorado being the fastest and in my opinion the most fun-to-drive.

      @@SSMJ hate to break it to you but the 3.6 pentastar is in the dodge caravan. yes its also in the v6 "sports cars" but its not the desired engine option for a reason.
      second even if you were right those two classes being a budget sports car and a off road dedicated suv are not meant for towing or hauling and neither is the gladiator.
      i say i would like to see a comparison that is against 2 trucks that are likely to be cross shopped and are meant to do a trucks job. and this a is a towing comparison video i couldnt care less about your claimed dyno results as i dont care about a 0-60 on a truck meant to do a trucks job.
      now i say id like to see a video of colorado vs 1500 because someone who tows there boat or small camper or even consistant 5000lbs towing runs might want to know which fits there needs better while being the best bang for there buck in reliability and on fuel
      now i think this is a unfair comparison because the gladiator is so out of its desgined purpose proof being that it doesnt have a trailer brake and that from this test they seemed very worried when it was being tested and its partly due to a suspension thats not made for towing
      you are welcome to disagree but this video is meant to help find someones correct truck for jobs that can be done by both but possibly better or cheaper by another which is why my opinion is what it is

      Everyone seems to want many different tests but the reality is these guys have 3 trucks that they own and they have access to trucks made available to the Press by manufacturers, they have no say in what is in the Press pool. They don't go to dealers and pick any truck they want. They are dealt a hand and can only test what they are given to choose from. They did obtain another 7.3 Ford recently and did a MPG test with 3:55 and 4:30 but one was with the Tremor package so not exactly the same. They do a very good job with what is available but will never be able to please everyone because of limited access to makes and models.

    For that kind of daily work, 5 times a month or more the 3/4 ton truck is definitely the way to go. If I was pulling 7000lbs once or twice a month or so then maybe a 1/2 would be more livable day to day. In the 1/2 ton truck I'd probably spec it out with the 6.2 or the 3.5 EcoBoost if it was a Ford. Extra power is always a good thing to keep in reserve.

You guys have done plenty of drag races before, and of course we know a f150 ecoboost or a ram 1500 hemi are always going to beat a heavy duty, but what is the power & acceleration difference with a trailer. I suspect the heavy/super duty might fair a bit better than it does in the truck-only races, but i'd like to find out. An LT is pretty much the same as an XLT except it offers dual climate control where as in the Ford, I have to step up to a Lariat. Dual climate control is a must cuz the wife and I always fight over the thermostat in my XLT. And I hate the way Ford packages everything right now. Almost any option I select on a base lariat automatically upgrades it to mid lariat, chrome/sport package, etc! 🤬
      The only deal breaker on a new Chevy/GMC is that dinky gas tank. It’s even smaller on the diesel 1500. Except give it some time and Titan tanks and TransferFlow will offer an upgrade tank. But those little diesels are slugs. 😑

    Obviously the biggest truck will tow the most/best and the smallest truck will tow the least/worst but it's important to pick the right tool for the right job.
    Midsize is meant for offroading (Gladiator mostly), camping, overlanding and needing a bed for occasional large items like a couch or plywood.
    1500s are meant for the average person who occasionally tow a camper, larger boat or haul construction equipment but typically just daily drive.
    2500s and up are meant for towing and work. Period.
    I wouldn't want a midsize to tow a trailer long distance nor would I want a F250 to drive to and from work every day

    Great test! Using a modest (7000 lb) trailer weight for the Chevy and Ford is a closer metric for most drivers than towing the maximum. So, this test broadens the perspective. Then again, your prior tests with other Ram products revealed their computed MPG was not as realistic as Chevy & Ford.

      The Ranger and Colorado both have lower tow ratings. Would have had to use a small enough trailer to not really distinguish between the 1500 and Super Duty. So few people consider a Ram 2500 relative to Ford or Chevy so it wouldn't be quite useful for most people - and you really shouldn't get a Ram 1500 if you plan on towing a lot, the capability is there when new, but they eat transmissions.

    I really want to see the new ford gas F350 7.3 vs 6.2 test. They are both available in the 350 and both have the 10 speed. I want to see how much of the new performance is due to more and closer gears and how much is due to the 7.3 having a lower rpm torque curve. It would be super interesting to see, basically how much difference does a newer transmission make? Same goes for the Rams. You can get the same basic truck right now with a 6 speed or an 8 speed.
    The selfish reason I'm curious is because I have a 19 F350 with the 6.2 6 speed and I feel like with a 10 speed it would probably pull hills without losing speed, but the 6 speed gears are just too far apart.

    I had an 88 Jeep Comanche Pioneer longbox 4x4 very much like yours which I set up for towing. I occasionally pulled a travel trailer which when loaded for the trip scaled at 4760 lbs for trailer only. The Jeep only scaled out at only 3400 pounds without driver. But included full tank of gas and class III receiver hitch, adjustable hitch, equalizer bars plus the friction sway controller. The trailer had a tongue weight of 640 lbs. (820 with water on board, so I did not tow with water on board.) the Jeep was not happy towing that travel trailer without the equalizer and sway controller hooked up. The teter totter effect was serious. It was not safe to drive because it transferred a significant amount of weight off the front wheels and effected both steering and front end braking. Using the equalizer bars as recommended and instructed, had almost a worse effect. They transferred to much weight to the front axle. Wound up over loading the front axle and tires and wound up with only about 900 pounds on the rear axle. It “looked right” but was not. (All this was done using a platform scale to obtain axle weights.) The hitch had 2 adjustments. Hitch ball height and pitch. The pitch controlled the horizontal angle of the equalizer bars. Essentially the load they carried and transferred to the front of the tow vehicle. (It also had an additional effect of transferring sone of the tongue weight to the trailer axles) That load was also controlled by the number of chain links you used between the bar and the hook on the trailer tongue. My goal was to tune the load to get close to a 50/50 weight distribution on the front and rear axle. When I was done fooling around with the adjustments (it took quite a while, as it was a learning process as well) I achieved the weight balance. But due to the softer rate leaf springs on the rear axle vs the front, the rear end squatted more. There was about a 4.5 inch bumper drop) So the truck had a bit of rear squat when viewed from the side. There was still plenty of suspension travel left in the rear however. (Comanche has a LOT of rear suspension travel!) when all was said and done, I had the load carrying, braking and handling optimized for the package. At the end of the day, it towed the load almost as well as my 1989 F-150 2x4 which is equipped with a class IV 6800 pound tow rating. The 150 has a bigger engine and weighs considerably more. With its canopy and gas, tips the scales at around 4700 lbs.

  • @regsparkes6507

    Here's proof that not using weight distribution hitches while towing maximum weights, is asking for a 'world of woes' especially in the lighter weight / smaller wheelbase trucks.
    For my hauling needs the Chevy SIlverado is tops, BUT I would use weight those weight distribution bars!
    Of course this is why they make trucks of different sizes,...if I just HAD to have a Gladiator, I wouldn't tow ANYTHING over 5,000 pounds.

    It's nice to see the capabilities of what 55k in truck terms gets you. If towing frequently then the F250 for sure, if occasional towing, mpg and some off roading are in being done then the Silverado. The jeep makes no sense at all especially if you factor in discounts by the manufacturer which I'm sure is zero. I think if you're looking at midsize trucks, pony up at least to a 1500/150 series. Price, mileage is similar. Other capabilities not so much.

    • @MrJamesLuz

      J M FCA is offering discounts on the Gladiator. It’s marketed to the same people that weigh wrangler vs 4Runner vs Tacoma. It makes sense if you want a truck and like off roading. I’d get a Gladiator if I didn’t already have an F150 FX4.
      Which also validates your point. For what a Tacoma TRD Pro costs you can get an F150 SCREW 4x4 that gets better MPG and can tow more.

If you're just pulling your camper to the campground in the spring and back home in the fall, then the midsize is fine, just take it easy. If you're towing short distances a few times a month then the half ton. If your towing pretty much daily or cross country then HD.

    Jeep needs an inline 6 like modernized the 4.0 for all truck/Jeep-like (cringed) duty so it can be efficient, low emissions, bulletproof, and torquey. Plus this test is not comparable, it's about what size/weight class of your needs for what you use it for. The f250 is better suited for this test, the Silverado (my favorite) is better for off-roading and back trails and other uses, but the Jeep is the best off-roader in this group and can climb mountains and carry your outdoor gear. No winner/loser here just choose which one of these rigs that suits your needs depends on what you use it for.
