This place feels like the years of my childhood spent wandering southern antique shops with my grandmother,Honey. This is a really fantastic place!
The hair necklace is probably a Victorian era funerary thing.
It is. But that one was not a necklace. It would be hung on the wall. They did sometimes put locks of departed loved ones into a necklace, or even a belt buckle. At a time when pictures were expensive and difficult to obtain (this was also the reason for Victorian death photography, as it was oftentimes the only picture people ever had, of their loved ones), it was a way of visually remembering the loved one.

I'm going to be in the Belhaven area on business soon-enough, but, after hearing how few visitors they get, I might have to stop by. Great vid. Made me want to see more.

1 too 2 visitors a week is so sad. Even if there was just 1 thing you wanted to see it would be worth the visit if you lived close by. As for the corn cob in the box with the glass front, as a kid I remember seeing these in lots of bathrooms as joke. We all know where your supposed to put the corn cob but I never could figuar out why they thought that would help or why its funny .

Belhaven is the town I grew up in. I can't believe you were there man. That's awesome. Too bad you didn't go down the road about 30 minutes to Bath, NC. They have a museum there with a lot of relics from Blackbeard the Pirate.
If you come to the UK I think you would love Horniman’s museum. It’s just outside London, Forest Hill. The Victorian gentleman had to buy another house to live in because of his obsessive collecting. Items are still being discovered at the museum. In the 90’s an entire glass and iron gazebo was discovered flat packed. It has been put together and now hosts weddings and social events at the museum. They have a web site if you are interested.

A lot of coastal towns have similar flooding during hurricane season. The locals are probably used to it.

People used to use corn cobs for toliet paper i think
You are correct sir. When I was a child some 60 years ago, my grandparents had a cabin in the woods that was situated on a lake that we would spend weekends fishing there. With no indoor plumbing they had an outhouse and it was always equipped with either corn cobs or the Sears catalog. Kids think they got it rough now when they have no "bars" or phone chargers.

Wet specimens. I love taxidermy, but wet specimens are the stuff of nightmares. They look like zombies just waiting to happen!!
I’ve been here a few times and I can see it needs to be better taken care of. Not to knock the staff or town but I wish I lived closer to redo a lot of the info cards, dust and try to preserve some of the items better. I love going there. :). I was shocked to see it as a suggestion when I came on fb today. Thanks for the video!

childs coffin not casket. coffins have 8 sides including top and bottom caskets have 6

Coffins are body shaped caskets are boxes.watch ask a mortician if you want more on the differences and other death stuff
@@ayajade6683 I know the differences. Caskets are run of the mill, simple rectangles containing 6 sides. Coffins are closer to the shape of a body requiring 8 sides. 6 sides and 8 sides is the easiest and most common way they are classified and built. I watch her all the time, I have family in texas near her funeral home.

It seems so marked with destiny that your visit there come at that time. It seems significant to you as so much time, success and strife has passed since you first wanted to go as well as for them since they appreciated such an unexpected and special visitor when it might have seemed easier to just not bother opening that difficult day. So interesting.

There are lots of antique shops in my town. with strange little trinkets like the things in the vid. Especially old saws used for felling trees. (Snohomish is an old logging town) I’ve even spotted some antique prosthetic legs. I think you’d enjoy it. It’s known as the antique capital of the Pacific Northwest!

Great video. One thing the museum got wrong was the chicken glasses. It was invited to stop chickens from eating one another when one was injured. never heard of anyplace having one. One hell of a collection.

Those chicken glasses are actually to prevent cannibalism. The red lenses render the chicken color blind and unable to see open wounds and raw flesh. Basically keeps them from an uproar. Once one chicken sees another one with open wounds it attacks that one and while being attacked the injured chicken inflicts wounds on the attacking chicken causing another to seek interest. It's a huge chain reaction that is avoided by making chickens wear hipster glasses lol

The corn cob in the box with a glass front would be placed in your modern bathroom as a joke from days gone by. Back in the day people had outhouses and no toilet paper. So they used dried corn cobs after the kernels were removed and processed into feed. Kind of makes two-ply look heaven-sent.

Hey Jake!! You come up with the very coolest places!! At--8:35-- the chicken red glasses were put on the chickens so they could not see blood, that's what they were really for, and basically to help keep them from fighting. 😁
What an amazing collection of this & that, from Australia
Corn cobs were once commonly used in place of toilet paper, in out houses. Often, these outhouses had no pit beneath, but were instead backed against the family's chicken coup. The chickens would peck the corn cobs clean, once they dried. Then the cobs would get shoveled-up and thrown out into the fields.

Yay!! I spent every summer in belhaven growing up . my grandma took me there several times. It is very strange! Glad to see you went somewhere i spent every summer.
Cool grandma! Mine lived nearby too, but if she was aware of this museum, she never told us. It wouldn't have been her thing. We went to the fossil festival and museum in Aurora a few times though. Not as cool.

After a short Google search, it looks like this place is still open. Thankfully. I have to add this to my visit list the next time in NC. Wish it was something we could do to get this place more visitors.
The corn cob that was for emergencies is a joke. The case it was in looked like an outhouse. People wiped their butts with corncobs back in the day. Great video Jacob.

I am new to this channel and I really thank that this is informative more power to your blog Sir.
The flooding you see, that is pretty much a everyday thing in this town at high tide, no hurricane needed. There used to be a hospital on the street closest to the water that was shut down about 3 years ago due to flood damage over the years.
The purpose behind the “in case of emergency” corncob is prior to the commercialization of toilet paper many people in rural areas would wipe their ass with corn cobs.
1-2 visitors/week is sad for sure but not surprising. Obviously there’s more than one of these kind of museums in the country, come up to the Maryhill Museum in Goldendale,WA.sometime, not only does it have interesting artifacts and collections but it’s also haunted.
I'd spend ALOT of time there!!!

I once made an 'Outter House' is what they were called originally, or 'out house' today out of chocolate just for fun. Was trying to make things that would draw folks attention when I was at flea markets to help sell my suff.
People really liked the hand made chocolate things so I made more, and made small doll house chocolates & you are only limited by your own imagination.
Was funny, folks would say, I want to eat it but I don't want to eat it & then they'd laugh. They weren't expensive. I just mostly charged for the cost of the chocolate & my costs to make & added a dollar or two on top of that.
I liked to see the happy faces & it got others to try to do the same things or make up their own stuff mostly for gifts at Christmas & stuff like that.
Now I stick to making doll houses, & dolls for the homes ect, making a Castle & graveyard with a Masoleaum for Halloween. Fun hobbie.
Do one on oregon house of mystery, oregon vortex in gold beach or gold hill oregon, cant remember which one.
