I found it impossible to pick a winner out of Keyscape and Rhodes V8. There was ONE clear winner however, that's the way you played. I could listen to that for hours!
1. Rhodes V8 2. Keyscape 3. UA 4. NI's Scarbee Rhodes has included so many parameters native to the instrument that on top of the modeling makes it a superior VST. Spectrosonics put a ton of love into their patches and modeling, combos, including many other keyboards aside from Rhodes. It is an amazing collection. UA's patches are very warm and the tuning capabilities along with their artist patches make for quick ready make tone as well as tuning deep dives. NI built a great Scarbee. It sounds good right out of the box. But you're confined to stay very close to those tones with the limited parameters.
I’ve been playing the Mark 1 Rhodes piano since 1975. None of these vst’s really sounds like the real deal. Imho However there are some impressive emulators in this review. I use Scarbee so thats my number 1. 2. Keyscape. 3. UA audio. 4. Rhodes v8 ( sounded too plasticky tone wise for my liking) Thanks for your very informative review and great playing! Looking forward to any updates on this hot topic
Great shootout! ‘Preciate you playing songs (Stevie) that we associate most with the Rhodes sound. Another great library to check out is UVI’s ‘KEYSUITE’ Electric. Gives Keyscape and Rhodes own vst a definite run for its money! Subbed.
If you love the original Scarbee Mark I, a while back now they did a new 88-key version, simply called Classic EP-88s, only available from Scarbee. Even clearer tines, and more complete package of settings and effects.
I like the sounds of the Rhodes V8 the Most! I don’t own KEYSCAPE but it also sounds nice! I do not own any of the other VST’s I only own the Rhodes on this list that is probably the biased reason why I am choosing it as my favourite! But they all sounded nice! The playing is sounding good regardless of VST!
They are all different and feel like they are clearly going after different models of rhodes. most have their uses. For me personally, having run all of the except the V8 through it's full production paces (except V8 which i recently got, but it's lay in bark is not my favorite rhodes version of that, but i'll see how i feel playing with it). Keyscape had been a go to, but the one I actually lean to the most is the UA Electra. when you switch to the stage model, that gets the particular bark i prefer but more than anything (and the closest i've found to the old rhodes I used to own, I have found it to be far more tailored to mixes. Have to do a lot of less work to get it sitting in context of a production and a decent flexibility by changing mic types
I scrolled this far and havent seen someone mention uads Electra 88. I thought it sounded Amazing definitly better than the scarbee. So if we take it to the concept of better amp sims and effects would Electra 88 Reign supreme ? do to the fact that uad sims are definitly hands down better then NI ?
I have TONS of Rhodes VSTs (nearly all of the most popular), but Scarbee just finds ways to shine. the timber is just so complete (no pun intended... you know because it comes with Komplete... ne mine...)
Love your playing!! Got all of those except the V8...and a few more like Neo Soul etc. Lately I have been mostly emotionally attached to the UA Electra ...second is Keyscape
I've tried just about every Rhodes plugin under the sun and Keyscape is still the most playable, real sounding Rhodes plugin out there. Eric Persing as a sound designer is on a next level.
I'm Saying When he played that Electra 88 it hands down sounded like it had the most authenticity. when he played Keyscape it definitely sounded clean, definitely better than Rhodes and NI. to my ears Keyscape had a supreme clean top of the line Digital sound to it. Back in the day that's how people would try to get their music to sound due to the technology of that era. However, you can dial in that clean digital sound with Universal Audio. So, at that point is one really better than the other? #Funfact UAD utilizes Spitfire audio for its Samples. so that quality is definitely there. Yes, you can just use Keyscape and add the UAD plugins for a "faster" workflow but at that point wouldn't that route be hindering the experimental creativity, that makes each artist Unique? Just like each individual plugin, that was more or less showcased not necessarily battled lol in this video ?
I own all of these and like them all but in my opinion my favourite Rhodes VST that never seems to get mentioned is The Canterbury Suitcase by Soniccouture. It's a shame because it's an amazing VST. I use it more than any of these.
True...Its one of my go to Rhodes vst in Kontakt when playing live....Guess its not as popular as the ones he listed...The majority seem to just know mostly Keyscape & V8....smh.
Especially when you really tweak your own Sound the Rhodes V8 Pro beat all the others in my opinion. I compared it with acustic samples V-Tines which was my favorite Rhodes Sound until I discovered Rhodes V8 Pro. It really feels like a real Instrument. I would say this PlugIn has the same quality like the VSL Synchron Pianos that I love as well
They all sound good from you lol! I'd be 1. Rhodes V8; 2. Kontakt; 3. UAD Electra 88; 4. Keyscape. Reasons : 1. Rhodes sounds likes a rhodes. 2. Kontakt's Scarbee Mark 1 has great playing dynamics within the sound - would actually recommend Scarbee's upgraded version (Classic EPS-88S) which was sampled from George Duke's rhodes. 3. The UAD Electra88 is fun to play with, particularly the FX , cabinets etc - but (from experience) the raw sound has bad dynamics - it flicks to the rhodes "bark" sound like a switch, it's hard to find anything in between. 4. Keyscape. Never used it before but the tines sound really metallic and too present in most of the patches you demonstrated. Anyways great channel, subscribing!
Soo agreed...i AM a GTR player but looove the vintage Rhodes tone....and the closest is the V8, round, warm, sounds like a real mrk 1..(Which i love) a friend of mine owns a Keyscape pluggin and like You Say, too much tine, bark too much attack, ive tried programing it and mellowing it but i really couldnt find that sweet musical Rhodes like the real mcoy or that V8. It's like the Keyscape is a modernized xtra dinámic Rhodes but NOT a vintage mark 1. BTW That scarbee is awesome too! Very natural and warm
No Lounge Lizard? From what you showed definitely the Rhodes V8 sounded the best. Maybe could have played some more extreme settings. V8 sounded the most real to me and the most different from what I already have. Must check it out. Thanks!
I'm sorry, I have TONS of rhodes VATs, but Scarbee still finds a way to shine. It's just complete (no pun intended... you know, because it comes with Komplete... neh mine..)
Whenever I watch a versus battle video where the person doesn’t choose a winner, I immediately tell TH-cam not to recommend their channel to me if their videos show up in my recommends.
Music is such a subjective thing, though. The perfect piano for an EDM track isn't going to be the best piano for a classically trained pianist. What flys in one genre might not fly in another. So best to use your ear and decide for yourself what kind of sound works for you rather than someone else twlling you what you should buy.
All of these sound great. The user patches on the Rhodes V8 are nice. It has some of the richest sounds. UAD was nice and full too. The tines in the Keyscape patches sounded a little too shrill at times and growl on the hard attack sounded unbalanced as was too much when compared to the rest of that patch. I's say 1-Rhodes 2-UAD 3-Kontakt 4-Keyscape. I'm curious what you think about the Arturia Rhodes plugin and Neosoul Keys? Arturia, Neosoul Keys, and Rhodes V8 are my absolute favorites.
While I love VST's - the danger is in their discontinuance and discontinued support. LOVE the Rhodes V8, but it simply won't open on my Mac with Ableton - nothing but crashes (it was fine literally yesterday, no changes to anything). And it looks like the Scarbee Mark 1 is already discontinued.
I bought the Rhodes V8 and I *love* the way it sounds and plays. However, I have never had so many problems with a VST before. It’s constantly crashing on my Mac Studio to the point where I don’t even bother trying to use it anymore. Rhodes may have the sound dialed in, but it’s obvious as can be that they’re not a software company.
I'll Sub if you change the title to showcase! A Battle of Presets? Authenticity? Just Because Rhodes Created Rhodes Does not mean they would reign supreme lol this is a VST not a piece of hardware. Hold on now, with that being said Universal Audio Has their hands in both of those worlds, just saying. Now that we have cleared that up VST's are Samples of the original sounds at least with UAD I know that holds truth, it's not just sound designed. Sorry for the tangent back to what I was saying lol a Battle to me would be exact settings matched hand for hand & who sounds better, or in your case of going through presets which VST has the most Creative options. You play amazing and I would love to see you battle it out in both of those Aspects! That would be a fire Video!! Thank you BrO!!
I’ve never liked Keyscape’s rhodes or pianos!!! the Rhodes VST sounds from the actual Rhodes company are fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and the Rhodes from Kontact I have this one…. it sounds great as well but I’ll like ultimately the Arturia rhodes overall, which is not even in the runnings in this video surprisingly what’s up with that? 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ so my rankings for the VSTs: 1.) Arturia and Rhodes (tied) 2.) UAD 3.) Kontakt 4.) Keyscape 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
Rhodes V8 sounds great but at 300$ you are better off getting Keyscape which also sounds very good and getting a whole lot of other key sounds on top of it.
I had Rhodes V8 and it’s total bullshit, it doesn’t sound realistic, sound is too thin. UAD Rhodes sound nice almost like Herbie Hancock’s. Keyscape is super realistic many options and also they sampled it amazing it feel like real Rhodes than vst. But if you are looking for some serious Rhodes sound, then you need Neo Soul Keys Studio 2. The best Rhodes VST ever real Masterpiece.
You might need to check out some actual Rhodes Mark 8 recordings then. It's not modeling the models that we've been familiar with for the past few decades. But even in this video, it sounds like it has earthy bass and a good body even with the effects on, compared to the other example. You may need to check your settings.
Tried Rhodes V8 demo a while ago….terrible interface and low output level. Sounded ok. I always go back to Scarbee and Elektra is pretty good too with lots of onboard effects available. Not the best preset choice here for the Scarbee though. I find Blue Ballad a bit cheesy. Looking at value for money the Scarbee also wins hands down. Keyscape probably great but too expensive for me and no demo available (😡).
Thanks for your input! That’s interesting that you were having output issues with Rhodes…we didn’t experience that. We’ll definitely have to do a part 2 for this video and dive into the effects that are available for each. I haven’t dove deep into the onboard effects for the Electra yet but it does look pretty robust!

The Rhodes company that exists today is not the original company that built the iconic tines pianos. They bought the name Rhodes, so they could use it for a modern version they decided to produce. The UI doesn't seem to pickup all the notes being played at all times and that is unfortunate and bad programming on their part. It sounds good, but they need to get their crap together with the UI.
As a pianist, I tuned in to check out the vsts. After a while, I decided to just steal chord progressions and runs.
😂🤣 As long as you walk away with something we're happy for you!
As you should lol
I found it impossible to pick a winner out of Keyscape and Rhodes V8. There was ONE clear winner however, that's the way you played. I could listen to that for hours!
1. Rhodes V8

I favor Stevie with Keyscape. Thanks for the video. Wonderful as always. Blessings be upon you and yours! 💕
Thanks for watching!
Great shootout! ‘Preciate you playing songs (Stevie) that we associate most with the Rhodes sound. Another great library to check out is UVI’s ‘KEYSUITE’ Electric. Gives Keyscape and Rhodes own vst a definite run for its money! Subbed.
Vespertone by Teletone Audio is my favourite Rhodes + Wurlitzer vst. It may not be the most versatile, but it has a lot of character.
If you love the original Scarbee Mark I, a while back now they did a new 88-key version, simply called Classic EP-88s, only available from Scarbee. Even clearer tines, and more complete package of settings and effects.
Yes, a little surprising they chose to not include the newer (award winning) scarbee EP-88s here 😅
Now this is how you demonstrate a Vst!! 👍🏾
All are cool!!! But VTines MK1 (from AcousticSamples) missing here, also TOP!!!
Huh, I've never heard of this library! We'll have to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation.
Great video bro. Frank McComb is a crazy talented musician man . Huge shoutout to him also
🔥🔥

they are all great. The Rhodes V8 is the most flexible from the looks of it - and it sound very authentic to the real Rhodes I have heard in my life
Great vid! Thanks!
You can get extra mileage out of the Scarbee MKI if you use the D.I. preset with better amp sims and effects VSTs
I have kontakt and keyscape. But I must admit the Rhodes v8 sounds sweet. I need to add that to my arsenal 😅
That v8 design just has its own sound just like the real one compared to mkI-VII
💯 It’s quickly become a staple in our productions
I have Keyscape. Downloading demo of V8 now. Hold my coffee lol.
@@Targetdrew Get the Rhodes Anthology from them too, also a free trial, Mark 1, Mark V, Mark 7 and Sparkletop as well.

obrigado por assistir!
Great video, more comparing videos please on plug ins please 🙏🏼.
EZK is missing here! It has awesome interface and extension libraries.
1. Rhodes V8 2. Pro Keyscape 3. Native and 4. UAD
Thanks for sharing! I'm in doubt between V8 and UA- Electra88. What do you think?
You should also put Rhodes Affair 3 on the list
you missed RHODECASE 88 by Virtuscape Audio!!! Cool vid! Subbed

Love this list and the reasoning behind it! 💪🏾
I agree keyspace always sounded good to me when isolated but it almost sounds like some 90s/00s nord patches when compared to the others

Herbie Hancock - Butterfly

That might be the camera doing that lol.

I see you playing that I Can't Help It by Michael Jackson! Stevie Wonder wrote an amazing song, and the Rhodes is where it shines!
What song his play ? His sound lake Steve wanda
No Neo Soul Keys or VTines?
That’s said, Keyscape is still GOATED.
The UAD surprised me. Very warm tone.
