  • Lorraine wanted a clock for her workshop, but given she’s an element14 video content producer it wasn’t going to be any old clock! Follow Lorraine as she puts her own spin on a 3d print to create a unique timepiece you’ve never seen before. This is the first part of two videos about this clock. In the second video Lorraine will go through the different boards and the clocks potential different uses including an exercise stopwatch: bit.ly/39Zakm6

    I've printed diffusers for a couple of projects using natural translucent PLA - just 2 layers thick does a nice job.

    Coat the inside with white paint, this way the segments will be more reflective

    I've made a large clock and for a diffuser have used clear silicone caulk from the hardware store. Make sure it is %100 silicone.

    I build a word clock, where i had to diffuse the leds, too. I used special diffusion sheets and a 4 cm distance between led and sheet. That worked really well.

    I have the same China laser cutter but you can mod it to make it a lot better. I put a snap/lever switch on the lid so it cuts the laser off when lifted, a more powerful exhaust fan, and pump system with an aquarium water chiller so you don’t need a bucket full of ice water.

    • @lorrainbow
      @lorrainbow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not ice water underneath. Plus it's a laser cutter from a UK company, HPC. hpclaser.co.uk/co2-laser-cutters/ls3020/

      Oh I have a magnet inside that does the same - stops the laser starting with the lid open. Thanks for the tips

    Deeper segments to give the light a chance to spread. Then coat the inside with reflective tape to push more light out. Not done this exact thing but something similar and this is the way.

    • @lorrainbow

    I think more less bright diodes with colored filters would lit those segments more even, or using concept from LCD displays by lighting edge of the plexiglas.

    One of the tricks I used in a similar project for a television set I helped construct. We needed more punch and even out the reflection of the LED, I used foil tape or what HVAC technicians use to assemble duct work,. It is not duct tape. The writing on the tape comes off easily with acetone. Give it a try. It seemed to help on a very bright news set.

    I saw someone using those white plactic disposable dinner plates once and it looked great as a diffusor...

  • @MikePreston-darkflib
    @MikePreston-darkflib 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you make the bases deeper the surface diffuser will be further away from the LEDs, this will allow more spread and hence better diffusion.
    Also, coating the inside of the base with something reflective and sideways mount them, you will likely see a better result - like many of the nanoleaf clones on youtube.

  • @digiassn
    @digiassn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the designs of these. :D
    The problem isn't the diffusers. You need to increase the distance. Look at how the focuser on any professional light fixture, like a leko or a spot light, works. Or how focusing of a projector works. Its done by adjusting the distance to a lens. In this case your distance is so close youre not spreading the light enough, and they are too focused on your diffusing lens. You can test this easily by just holding the lens in front of your leds and moving it back and forth.
    Also, since you're using different colored plastics, your going to reflect different color wavelengths and absorb the rest of any of the scatter. Consider coating the inside wells with white or silver, or use foil. This way your reflecting back all wavelengths for maximum effect.

    instead of using white diffusion material, it will help the segments stand out if you use material that is the same color as the LEDs below

    • @lorrainbow
      @lorrainbow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LEDs are RGB. I know I only light them the colour of the number... But I think I'll actually colour them depending on the time of day. E.g. morning the entire clock will be blue

    You need to do two things to improve the legibility of your display, The segments need to be DEEPER to improve diffusion. Just hover a piece of your diffuser material over the LED's and raise it until you cant see the spots. That's how deep they need to be. You should be able to print some supplementary pieces to suit. Secondly the inside of your segments need to be WHITE! Internal reflections are sucking up all your light. Just some white vase mode "bun cases" should do the trick, simple. Lastly 11:00pm on a Sunday night! :-(

    Why not smaller to better fit the LEDs, it is not an airport sized room, and would be easier to read with lights on... I would try to put a darker transparent vinyl over the acrylic, so there is more contrast between off (currently white, reflecting too much ambient light) and on. Btw. number 1 is usually aligned to the right...

    • @lorrainbow
      @lorrainbow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted the full rainbow to appear on the backboard... and a MASSIVE clock :)
      Hmmm, do you know of any frosted acrylic in darker colours? The clock looks better in real life, it's just tricky to film.
      Yup, I DREW 1 on the right on the whiteboard and then I coded it on the left, oops!

    • @josefjelinek
      @josefjelinek 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorrainbow I did not mean special acrylic, that may be too limiting (and possibly expensive). I would experiment with adhesive vinyl sheets/rolls, which can be found frosted (for privacy glass), smoke tinted (for car windows and headlights) etc. I did not compare with the frosted acrylic, but it offers a lot of variability and combinations...
