    When I tinker with my old outboards, I always use a good headlamp. Works so good! My eyesight is also sadly not improving with age. 😔

    Finally things are starting to warm up! I've been getting outside and getting tanned up for the spring and summer. I really miss those smaller outboards. When I was a kid, that was my favorite thing in my life. An old 9.5 Johnson outboard. I kept is in the corner of my bedroom when I wasn't using it. I painted my neighbors house. I got 300 bucks for that and went right out and bought that used Johnson for 300 bucks. I think that was around 1974.

      @OutBoardTink62 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did too,HA! Hes lucky they were 5/16 bolts and not 1/4 20 they would of snapped like pretzels,LOLLL! Never use power tools for headbolts and especially Florida with its extreme high salt content in the water. Sustained heat and 6 point sockets by hand on each stuck bolt is the only way. Been doing this thing for years...Oh Well cant teach and old dog new tricks,LOLl!

    Block corroded lip gone.
    Heliarc aluminum weld or get used head.
    Unusual for that to happen.
    I have a 1978 7.5 in salt water still good.
    In 1970s all the Mercury s dissolved in salt water and OMCs lasted .
    Merc had steel shift and drive shafted all rusted and blocks water covers rotted through .
    We still have 1970s 70 HP 3 cylinder an 115v4 Evinrude Johnson used here all over in salt water!!
    A sin OMC Evinrude Johnson gone bankrupt...
    Enjoy your fun hobby !

    Maybe the previous owner made that passage so in case the tstat don’t open it won’t overheat.

  • @ct1762
    @ct1762 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    a cold motor will actually produce more power at full throttle. thats why racing motors dont even have t stats installed.its just everywhere else thats the issue:). i you want a head i have atleast 2 of em' i can send you!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I just did a video about that, cooler weather, faster motor! Gained 3 mph! But it had a thermostat in it. Summer time in Florida not a big deal, winter time needs that thermostat! I bought one on ebay, it should have been here 3 days ago but the guy took his sweet time mailing it out. It was in Lakeland, Fl. Thanks again !

    WOW - That's a big piece to be missing in the thermostat housing. I can understand how you wouldn't be able to see it (or even look for it) in your videos, but your detective work finally paid off. Motor sounds too good to have more trouble, but I do wonder how the hole happened. Nice work and nice video TOO.

    How would you adjust timing on that with no points? Or is that next?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for tuning in. It's a 1987 cdi, Capacitor discharge ignition. no points. It has a timing pointer and timing marks on the flywheel. You still have to synchronize it with the mark on the throttle cam and cam follower. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    Hey, amazing how that little motor pushed that big heavy boat at such a fair clip. It would make a great trolling motor and save a lot on fuel costs. More over, let another epiphany strike you: dump that 60 all thogeter as what's the rush on getting to the other side of the lake ... or back home from a fishing outing. 😁
