This video got to me. I mean it really hit me hard. I spent close to 30 years of my life in cabovers running coast to coast, border to border and then some. Watching these old trucks and the music you chose to accompany them it brought back a flood memories from years I can't relive. I have a huge amount of respect for the guys and gals that carried a camera and took lots of photos and also for these men that rescue old iron and give it another chance at life. My hats off to you.

I became an O/O back in '76 in southern California. Back then cabovers were pretty much all you could have with the length laws at that time. My first truck was a '68 Freightliner double cab with a 290 Cummins and a 5x4 trans. Wish I still had that truck today.

Praise Jesus, 44 to the finish line. He got me home safe for the
rocking chair and the final sunset. Now I lay me down to rest, all
beat to a pulp, I passed the Lord's test, no regrets, more coffee in
a gulp. Tired at times, lots of pain all the time, run out of money at
times, no food at times, left foot frozen at times, right foot roasting
at times. One last cigarette 3am at times, paper towel above the visor
at times, defrost chokes all the time, frozen brakes at times, a whole new meaning to hammer down at times, the Dayton and the Bud,
let me down at times. No more chrome, home sweet home now,
ALL THE TIME. Me n Jesus gulping coffee ALL THE TIME!

I really enjoyed your video. It brings back a bunch of memories, I started in a single axle, spring ride, plain jane Freightliner sleeper running for a contractor for Roadway Package System years ago. I drove that pogo stick of a truck from NJ to Fla to Pa and back to NJ weekly. I was young, dumb, and my back and knees didn't hurt. The guy I worked for who leased with RPS also had four other trucks three ran for RPS, the other two ran intermodal and one was a Mack F model. He also had a Mack MH signed on with RPS and he was the primary driver of it. It had the E9 V8 500hp (underrated to get past Uncle Sam's EPA back then) and used to blow my doors off with it.

I drove a COE KW in the late '70s, and they weren't made that way for style. Many of the Eastern states had a 55' overall length requirement, and even the western states had a 65 foot limit unless you wanted to run oversize. When the length requirements were made uniform all over and extended, the COE died.

Cabovers?: I drove a bunch of em between 1969--90; Brockways, Internationals, GMCs, Peterbilts, Kenworth, & Macks, but my favorite of all was a 1980 White Road Commander with a 400 Cummins big cam 3 engine affectionately known as my "Gold colored Road-Commode." What is the name of the first song in this video ?
I started driving in 1977 when cabovers were still a large presence on the road. A lot of memories here. Also companies that have long since went out of business, largely due to deregulation. Brought some tears reminded me of a more simpler life back then.

    • @vwalsh63

They kinda did. One day you could be 65' long and the next day as long as your trailer wasn't over 48' (might've been less than that) you could pull it with a tractor as big as you could get around corners. COEs were finished after that. Because as cool as they are to look at, that's where the coolness stops. You're beating your kidneys to death riding on the steer axle, they were mostly hot as hell until it got cold outside. In cold weather the wind seemed to come through the front of the cab unrestricted, your whole lower end would be numb in an hour. If you had to get in and out multiple times a day you'd be wishing for an elevator. I'm just sayin, it's much better to look at them on my phone than to ever get in one again.

@Pete James some people who use to drive cabovers back in the day told me they ride like you have a jackhammer up your ass & only get 2 or 3 miles per gallon when pulling a loaded trailer which is less than conventional cabs & very noisy inside the cab.
