Bob tailing, start in 4th, skip to 6th, skip to 10th, then to twelfth and hit your splitter into 13th. Hitting all your gears is a waste of time unless your going uphill loaded.

@@Aaronhouston33 I've got to drive a crane with hendrickson rubber blocks in the morning. That's better than one of our other cranes that has a rigid walking beam, no blocks, no springs, nothing. Can only go about 45mph on good smooth roads.

To all the people making remarkes of him grinding the gears, he admitted he didn't know how to. Take my advice, if you don't like his shifting or think he's an idiot, then DON'T WATCH THE VIDEO. IF YOU GOT NOTHING GOOD TO SAY DON'T SAY IT AT ALL.

all the complaints... he said quite clearly he had only shifted the 13 speed 3 times before making this vid. then he said several times during the vid he didnt know what he was doing. It's quite obvious he's not even a licensed driver. I think he bought this truck to restore or something. No one has commented yet that he pushed the red knob in with the yellow one... He IS NOT PULLING A TRAILER!!!

Man this brought back a lot of memories. I went to college to learn to be a pilot. I was licensed as commercial/instrument pilot and a flight instructor Single Engine Land. Life happened and 9/11 as well. I took an adult ed truck driving course at a local Tech School and of 8 was the only one to pass the road test first try. My teacher and I became and still are good friends. He offered me a job driving for him that day. I team drove for one week and my co driver quit. I continued on over the road for a year and still keep up the license. I remember learning to shift. My truck was an 86 Freightliner with a big bunk, 3406 Cat and 9 spd RR. No Jake. I pulled a 48 ft steel flatbed. The schools trucks were an old 350 V8 Mack cabover with a straight 5 spd and a GMC Astro with a 3406 and a 13 spd. I really liked the open road and the people I met. Life happened again and for the past 25 years I have owned a cleaning and restoration company like a Serv-Pro. I also became a train Engineer for an all volunteer local tourist railroad. My buddies all want Mustangs, Harleys, Chevelles, ect. I'd like to get a big truck to have as a toy. Nice video. Keep the cabovers alive my friend. My teacher and I occasionally still take working vacations and team drive Maine to California and back to escape. Now we do it with 379 Ext. Hoods 300 "WB with a 110 " Double Eagle sleeper 425 Cats and 18 spd RR dragging a spread air Great Dane reefer. I'm 47 he'll never see 60 again. We have fun for a couple old guys from Maine.

Drove an identical truck for six months in the mid 90's, hauling cattle, potatoes, and gravel. (Same color, even. I think 1/2 of the KW cabovers were brown.)
The company switched me into a newer Freightliner when I started running longer loads (still a 3406). They thought I was crazy for missing my old truck, but that thing grew on me. If it would have had a 13, I'd have taken it over the conventional.
Not much of a sleeper, but, all you do is sleep in it...

Shifting is no secret, everybody can hear it. ;-) It must be realy work, to steer this truck ... when i see the steering wheel position. It´s one of the best "Ami"-trucks for europe. It´s compact like a european truck, and has the charme of an american truck, like engine sound ... and ... and ... shifting sound. ;-) It must be a special experience to drive such a truck. Best regards from Dresden, Germany. :-)

That trans was never designed to go from L to 1st. They would grind every time. They called it granny gear.

Nice to see someone driving an old legend just for fun, give 'er a little stab when you downshift, other than that you did just fine man :) live and learn ( pretty sure you left your jake on though..it happens ) happy trails and be safe Driver

I’ll give you one piece of advice about a cabover never have anything loose in the sleeper when you tilt the cab up . What’s in the sleeper will come out through the windshield!!

I have a 1985 KW 90" Aerodyne with a Cat 3406B that I took out the 13spd and installed an Allison HT740. Added 48" to the 235" wheelbase to make 283" to facilitate a 32ft box that I'm converting into a motorhome. 40ft overall.
