    No1 - Achieving and maintaining a vacuum (No leaks anywhere EVER!). The best compromise they'll have is a partial vacuum for reduced air resistance. No2 - No earthquake areas only suitable. No3 - Requires huge amounts of energy to run pumps & maglev. Not cheap or low carbon footprint. No4 - How will they board train without either having highly efficient airlocks or sealed-off boarding areas? With the number of different doors or sealed-off stations at several stations on a daily working line, the risks of depressurization accidents rises exponentially. They're also talking about putting people's automobiles on these things. The complexity of maintaining a vacuum becomes in my opinion unreasonable. No5 - Must keep vacuum under certain tor to avoid catastrophic implosions. No6 - If under ground how will they access the train if there is a problem and it's stuck between stations? Will they need to also build access & maintenance tunnels? If above ground they will need to protect the tube(s) from any impacts or vastly different temperatures. In any case the entire vacuum would be lost if an access portal were to be opened, requiring huge amounts of time to reactuate the vacuum. Ever seen how long it takes to get a decent vacuum in even a small vacuum chamber? Imagine doing that for a 3 meter wide 500 mile tube!! Personally I think there are far too many problems for it to ever become practical. In addition, it's ALWAYS at least 2-3 times more expensive to construct, run & maintain than touted by the promoters. Elon Musk's boring costs are NOT much cheaper than other companies for example. Finally, Elon did NOT invent or come up with the idea of a vacuum tube form of transportation. That's been around for more than a century. Even the maglev "hyperloop" idea was immediately considered after it's first inception decades before Elon even got his start.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @Kifwoo Here's one way the science doesn't work. The video mentioned you would be transporting up to 10 000 people an hour. Let's assume that that is both ways. That is still 5000 people, one way, per hour. The prototype pod designs I've seen so far average around 24 people in a pod, but let's be generous again and say you can get 50 people in a single pod. That would still be 100 pods every hour or one pod every 36 seconds.
      Let that sink in for a second. pods, doing more than 1200km/h, spaced only 36 seconds apart. Today we need more spacing than that on vehicles that go far slower, just to ensure they can stop in time if something does happen in front.
      The estimates I have seen so far vary a little, but it looks like you'll be able to transport roughly around 2000, maybe 2500 people an hour through the hyperloop, making it a transportation system for the rich and few. While a regular train, that is slower, can take more than 10 times that amount of passengers without issue.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Kifwoo That's not what the 2 second rule in a car is about. If you are on a highway and you manage to stop your car in 2 seconds, you've slammed into something. The 2 second rule exists to compensate for your reaction time. If the car in front of you hits the brakes, you need about 1 second to register that event and start the action of braking yourself. That's why you should keep at least 2 seconds distance from the car in front of you. The 2 second rule is NOT related to stopping distance what so ever.
      And yes, a train with steel wheels on steel tracks has a maximum deceleration of 1.2m/s². What the max deceleration for a hyperloop is going to be? We don't know.
      And larger pods? We call that trains, and those do not fit into the view of Hyperloop that promised is quick and easy pods that would take us directly to the station nearest to our destination with a pod ready to go almost every minute. The larger the pod, the more time those pods will lose on (dis)embarking passengers and thus keeping the platforms occupied, but also the less likely that you will get a denser network of stations in cities so you can go from A to B directly without having to change as you have with public transport today.
      Or think about it another way: if Musk was so sure about Hyperloop, why isn't he investing in it? He made the hype 7 years ago but today, it is quiet. Even with The Boring Company he went from aiming for an underground Hyperloop, to Loop with pods to Loop with Tesla cars. He knows that it will still take decades before we can solve all the issues and maybe make it a commercially viable enterprise.

    Building a hyperloop between two cities some 90 minutes apart seems a bit overkill. A conventional HSR train can cover the same distance in half hour or less. Wouldn't it be more worthwhile to build a hyperloop to replace longer distances, one that is normally covered by a commercial airliner?
    Also one of the concept design shows passengers sitting in forward and reverse facing seats. I would think it would make more sense to have all of them facing forward considering the acceleration that the passengers will be subjected to.

    1. At no point is anything "inside" shown.
    2. It isn't a 22 Billion Dollar Project, but 22 Billion Dinars accoring to the video.
    Hyperloop is defined in the video as a train in a tube running in a vacuum.
    Video says a section will be running by the end of 2020 - that is close.
    They should be running the system in now, with real people inside real "pods" to fix teething problems.
    But in reality, we don't know of a single tube having been built yet, or anything about "pods".
    The video says 750mph - in vacuum.
    That is pointless. 300mph in air will still make a 30minute journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi - in any case you still have to get in and out of pods, and get to your final destination, the 15minutes saved between 750mph and 300mph is a multi-billion dollar folly.

      I think it would be a problem but not too much to overcome after all on the international space station they have to change pressure when they go in and out so something like that could work

    • @elmeriseppinen
      @elmeriseppinen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@joelcairns8375 even small airlocks are quite slow. When talking about an airlock that would fit a train inside, you are looking at tens of minutes of pumping the air out (remember that 12 min travel time). Of course you could keep the train in the vacum at stations and make a seal around the doors, but really thats the least of your worries.
      What you should worry about is thermal expansion. If you build your tube out of steel, say 100km long,temperature change from 0C to 60C will change the length of the tube by approximately 80m. Also, the top of the tube is exposed to direct sunlight while the bottom is more or less in shade. This may cause some deforming, which may lead to sudden collapse of the tube.
      The structure would also become the largest vacuum chamber in the world, and would most likely suffer from leaks (I mean, we seemingly can't even build oilpipes that wouldn't leak) and therefore would require continuous pumping.
      But, at the moment there is absolutely no working prototype of the hyperloop. In all the shown footage the "hyperloop" was pushed by what is essentially a small electric car, or rolling on wheels and stopping because of friction.

    • @Robbedem
      @Robbedem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elmeriseppinen I seriously doubt they could make seals around the doors work.
      But, if they make the airlocks just a little bigger than the pods, there's not much air that needs to be removed, so maybe it would only take a couple of minutes. But it is not providing condifence when they don't show any real stuff.

    A few problems... How are you accounting for expansion during the warm day versus contraction on the cold nights? Bad enough in temperate climates but Saudi Arabia is notorious for brutal heat during the day and almost ice like cold at night. You know, being a desert and all. Over the length, it'll amount to requiring very flimsy gas seals at the intersections. Also, the upper surface will be under direct sunlight and will expand at at different rate to the underside of the tube which will be in the shade.
    I mean, your snazzy CGI movie shows a continuous length but in reality, it can't be manufactured like that. It will have to be in sections and those sections will require gas seals. What happens when one of of those seals breaks and the vacuum sucks in a metric ton worth of air which slams into an oncoming train? That's a few tons worth of lightweight, composite train traveling at the speed of sound hitting a metric ton of air, also traveling at the speed of sound, in a head-on collision... It would be anarchy. Real wrath of God type stuff. We're talking, "picking up" bodies with buckets and sponges.
    These are just some of the very real problems these kinds of systems face and I'm willing to bet none of you so-called "engineers" have even bothered to address them. Hell, the idea of trains traveling in vacuums is over 100 years old. There is a very good reason it still hasn't been done today though.
    Still, having said all that, if the Saudi's want to piss their money up the wall only to have an epic, global news coverage type accident where a lot of people die, let them.

      Presumably the same way they deal with gas and oil pipes... expansion joints. The upper surface meanwhile if you read the Alpha proposal (which you haven't) is meant to be covered by solar panels running across the top of the tubes the entire length of the system.
      As to chance of a catastrophic vacuum breach, there will be pressure relief valves every few hundred meters or so, so any release of pressure will not be the doomsday scenario you are suggesting because there are people much much smarter than you.. and much richer who have thought about these things. But don't worry... keep the Thunderf00t grift going... I mean that guys a genius with all his inventions such as... oh wait... he's never invented anything in his life.

      Real engineers realised that it was COMPLETE AND UTTER BOLLOCKS in the first place. It's the childlike adulation of celebrity LUNATICS like Elon Musk to blame for its popularity. Anyway, it's March 2022 and Virgin Hyperloop just laid off half its staff. It can't be long until they shut it down completely now and it'll be the fitting end fir this IMBECILIC FANTASY !

      Furthermore, since you are in a vacuum, engineers need to find a way to provide continuous oxygen for its passengers. Also how would they maintain a vacuum seal when passengers get on and off?

    Elon Musk did not start Tesla. He was a risk capital investor that bought into the company after its creation and after the first concepts of the roadster were already designed and in prototyping.... He did start SpaceX though.
